Baba Charlie is an icon of Melaka that has been churning out delicious Peranakan / Nyonya kuihs since 1988. Although located further from the main city, it is worth the trip down to the shophouse that boasts a variety of kuehs (cakes and desserts) which are painstakingly made by hand.
In this video, you will see a couple of Aunties working on Kueh Dadar, Nyonya Kaya and Onde-Onde.

Nyonya is a Malacca Malay-Chinese mixed marriage community that has a strong tradition in many things, one of which is their food. This video actually takes you right into the kitchen of Bab Charlie's house cum food factory. Be amazed by the hive of activities right insdie as you witness kuih being made on the spot . Take your pick from the spread laid on the table freshly prepared from the kitchen. You will find Nyaonay dodol, tarts, dumplings, in a mixed variety of shapes and colours! Most of all, they absolutely taste good! The crowd seems to know what they are looking for alright. They leave with bags of selections every time! Come over and see what you can find!

This is Baba Charlie Lee's off-the-main street bakery that has a 60-year heritage of fine authentic Nyonya kuih tradition . Baba Charlie has been at this business for almost 30 years and everyone around is always looking for his temptations. Just look at his ancestors' pictures and you can sense the authenticity in the air! The bakery starts churning out over 20 types of kuih as early as 4 am everyday in order to cater for the hot demand from walk-in customers who have heard of Baba Charlie and his kuih. Locals as well as tourists are always to be seen here. You will be surprised with the fresh-from-the-bakery colourful variety and sweet temptations all places right before your eyes. You name it they have it.Kuih bakul, durian dodol,and now even Baba Charlie's nasi lemak and pickled mix! Surely they are hard to resist! Come see and taste them for yourself !

When you're in Melaka you will see Nyonya or Peranakan restaurants everywhere. Nyonya or Peranakan cuisine is a mash up of Malay and Chinese food. The Baba Nyonya are the descendants of Chinese migrants who intermarried with the local Malay in areas of Malaysia including Melaka and Penang.
We searched for a restaurant in Melaka that was reasonably priced as well as authentic and found Unicorn Cafe. Unicorn Cafe was started by owner Evonne Yeo as a way for her to share her heritage food to others and to keep the love of Nyonya food alive. All dishes at Unicorn Cafe are priced under RM10.50/$2.50USD and you can get a lunch set for around RM10.50 which includes a main, rice and vegetables of the day. We think that is great value!
We sample the pai tee a Peranakan starter often referred to as 'top hats' because of their shape, seh bak- a pork dish, chicken debal curry and a fried fish with sambal. The food is excellent and both the Chinese and Malay influences are really prominent in the food.
After lunch we head to a spot which loads of subscribers have recommended to us- Baba Charlie Nyonya Kuih. Baba Charlie is famous for it's range of Nyonya Kuih. It's located a bit out of Melaka town but is well worth the trip to sample their famous snacks.
When in Melaka eat Nyonya food and Nyonya Kuih! Thanks to all our subscribers who recommended Baba Charlie Kuih to us!
