BABA MANDIR IS A DISTINGUISHED SIGHTSEEING PLACE OF SIKKIM. THIS “MANDIR” OR SHRINE IS DEDICATED TO “BABA” HARBHAJAN SINGH, WHO WAS A SOLDIER OF THE INDIAN ARMY. HE DIED NEAR THE NATHULA PASS IN EASTERN SIKKIM, INDIA. TWO SHRINES HAVE BEEN BUILT TO SHOW REVERENCE TO BABA HARBHAJAN SINGH. THE OLD ONE HAS BEEN BUILT AT THE SITE OF THE BUNKER, WHERE BABA HARBHAJAN WAS POSTED DURING HIS TENURE IN THE INDIAN ARMY. THE NEW ONE HAS BEEN BUILT AT CLOSE PROXIMITY FROM CHANGU LAKE.
OLD BABA MANDIR
AT A DISTANCE OF 60 KM FROM THE MAJESTIC GANGTOK CITY TOWARDS THE LEGENDARY NATHULA, YOU WILL FIND A ROAD LEADING TOWARDS THE KUPUP VALLEY UP TO TUKLA. A BIFURCATED ROAD FROM TUKLA WOULD CONNECT TO THE OLD BABA MANDIR (BUNKER). AT THIS PLACE; THE SAMADHI OF BABA HARBHAJAN, FAMOUSLY KNOWN, AS OLD BABA MANDIR HAS BEEN BUILT.
HARBHAJAN SINGH WAS BORN IN THE SADRANA VILLAGE OF GUJRANWALA DISTRICT (PRESENTLY IN PAKISTAN) INTO A SIKH FAMILY ON AUGUST 30, 1946. ON 9TH FEBRUARY 1966 HE GOT ENROLLED INTO THE PUNJAB REGIMENT OF INDIAN ARMY AS A SEPOY. THE YEAR 1968 BROUGHT HAVOC MISFORTUNE FOR THE STATES OF SIKKIM AND NORTH BENGAL, AS THEY WERE UNDER THE FURY OF NATURAL DISASTER. FLOODS, LANDSLIDES AND HEAVY RAINFALL CLAIMED THOUSANDS OF LIVES IN THE TWO STATES. SEPOY HARBHAJAN SINGH MADE AN IMMENSE CONTRIBUTION DURING THIS TIME IN HELPING THE SUFFERERS TO SUSTAIN. ON OCTOBER 4, 1968, WHILE HE WAS ESCORTING A MULE COLUMN FROM TUKU LA, HIS BATTALION HEADQUARTERS TO DONGUCHUI LA, HARBHAJAN SINGH SUDDENLY SLIPPED AND FELL INTO A FAST FLOWING NULLAH AND UNFORTUNATELY DROWNED. STRONG WATER CURRENT CARRIED HIS BODY FOR ABOUT 2 KMS FROM THE SITE OF THE ACCIDENT. HE WAS SEARCHED WITH ALL EFFORTS, BUT HIS BODY WENT MISSING. ON THE FIFTH DAY OF HIS MISSING, HIS FELLOW PRITAM SINGH HAD A DREAM, WHERE HARBHAJAN SINGH HIMSELF INFORMED HIM OF HIS TRAGIC DEATH AND HE ALSO MENTIONED THAT HIS BODY IS LYING UNDERNEATH THE HEAP OF SNOWS. HARBHAJAN SINGH ALSO EXPRESSED THE STRONG DESIRE TO HAVE A SAMADHI MADE AFTER HIM. HOWEVER, PRITAM SINGH DID NOT PAY MUCH IMPORTANCE TO HIS DREAM. BUT LATER, WHEN HARBHAJAN SINGH’S BODY WAS DISCOVERED AT THE VERY PLACE, WHICH HE HAD MENTIONED IN THE DREAM, ALL WERE TAKEN ABACK. AND, TO HONOR HIS WISH, A SAMADHI WAS BUILT NEAR CHHOKYA CHHO AT AN ELEVATION OF AROUND 4,000 METERS, WHICH GAINED POPULARITY AS THE OLD BABA MANDIR. THIS SAMADHI IS LESS VISITED BY TOURISTS. VISITORS NEED TO CLIMB 50 STAIRS TO REACH THE BUNKER, THE SITE WHERE THE SAMADHI HAS BEEN BUILT. THIS WAS THE PLACE WHERE BABA WAS POSTED DURING HIS SERVICE PERIOD IN INDIAN ARMY.
Baba Harbhajan Singh: A Dead Soldier still on duty | वनइंडिया हिन्दी
Major Baba Harbhajan Singh was an Indian Army soldier soldier who died near the Nathula Pass, Sikkim. He is revered by soldiers of the Indian army as the Hero of Nathula. He has been accorded the status of saint by believers who refer to him as the Baba. Many of the faithful people, chiefly Indian army personnel posted in and around the Nathula Pass and the Sino-Indian border between the state of Sikkim and Chinese occupied Tibet have come to believe his spirit protects every soldier in the inhospitable high altitude terrain of the Eastern Himalayas. As with most saints, the Baba is said to also grant favours presumably to those who revere and worship him.

Nathula Pass, Changu Lake, Baba Mandir, Zero point : India - China Border, Gangtok, Sikkim Tourism
Nathula Pass, Changu Lake, Baba Mandir, Zero point : India - China Border are some of the major tourist destinations of Gangtok as well as of sikkim tourism.Nathula pass is located at an altitude of 14,140 feet. It is about 52 Kms from Gangtok to Nathula pass by road. One can go there via Changu lake and Baba Mandir. On the way to Nathula one can see Changu lake which is one of the main attractions of sikkim. Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir is located 10 min prior of Nathula pass. There are a number of myths about baba Harbhajan Singh in that area. At changu lake one can see an animal with long hair, called Yak. One can ride on it to take photographs.
Nathula is always covered with white snow.one can see snowfall there even in summer. Temperature remains freezing cold. The roads are very dangerous. The road always remains so covered with snow, cloud and frost that it can hardly be seen properly. Landslide is a very often incidents here. I must suggest to all the tourists who visits Gangtok, sikkim, to visit Nathula Pass. It will be your lifetime experience.

Exploring Tsomgo / Changu Lake & Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple | Sikkim | Day-02 | Aditya Shrivastava
Hello Friends,
Welcome back to my channel ????????
I hope you guys have already watched the first vlog of North East India. If you haven’t, the link is over here:
In the second vlog, we will be visiting Changu/Tsomgo Lake and Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple. We initially started off for Changu Lake which took us around 2.5 – 3 hours. The roads are built out of mountain rocks and it was bumpy, but it was a beautiful ride all the way to the destination. You can see beautiful misty landscapes speckled with gurgling waterfalls and serene lakes.
Changu/Tsomgo Lake is a glacial lake is located at an elevation of 3,753 m(12,313 ft), The beautiful lake is surrounded by steep mountains which are covered with snow during winter. But as we went during the month of September, we weren’t able to see any much of the snow, but we were greeted by beautiful lovely flowers. We were completely awestruck by the mesmerizing view of mother nature.
Other tourist attractions at the lake site include joy rides on decorated yaks and mules. You will find a lot of kiosks offering a variety of food and drinks. But we preferred to enjoy the staple food of Youth India – Maggie, which was a blessing for our sore throats.
The second destination for the day was Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple. Trust me, at an elevation of 4000 meters approximately, this place is so spiritual that you will get goosebumps. It is surrounded by magnificent mountains thereby giving an amazing view to the tourists.
Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple is basically a tribute/samadhi which has been made in his memory. Let me tell you why: Captain Harbhajan Singh who is fondly called as Captain Baba Harbhajan Singh or Saint Baba was an Indian Army Soldier who was martyred in 1968 near the Nathu La in eastern Sikkim, India, at the tender age of 22. Legend says that he still serves the nation even after his death. Shocked eh? Even I am. Although he is no more, he protects every soldier in the inhospitable high-altitude terrain of the Eastern Himalayas. He is called as the Hero of Nathula by soldiers of the Indian army.
A precautionary health warning to everyone; You must bring warm clothes and also something to protect your ears because the temperature can get really low.
Please note that both Changu Lake and Baba Mandir comes under the Protected Area. So, you need to go through a registered tour operator in Sikkim and acquire a Protected Area Permit pass. The permit should be applied in advance before the trip by your tour operator. You are required to submit a photo Id proof (Driving license /Passport/ Voter Id Card ) and two passport size photographs. In the case of foreign nationals, a special permit would be required.
