Babb's Bridge

The Babb's Bridge, Cumberland County, Maine (1843?).

There is some question as to the date of the building of the Babb's Bridge. On doing the research for this bridge, some report the bridge was built in either 1840 or 1843, and others report that the bridge was built in 1864. It also appears it was the only one built with a Queenpost truss. This may be true, but it is unclear if this was unique to Maine bridges or just those of Cumberland County. Its Queenpost truss was reinforced with extra framing to handle the long span, but it is equally unclear if this truss was used in the original bridge and replaced with a Howe truss design in the rebuild. Nevertheless, by an act of vandalism the bridge was destroyed by fire on May 6, 1973 and an exact replica was reconstructed in 1976 and was later opened to traffic. This bridge spans the Presumpscott River—some 66 feet of clear span, with a total of 79 feet from end to end. It has an elevation of 121 feet. The bridge is located two and one half miles south of Windham. To get there, go one mile west, over the river, between the towns of Gorham and South Windham. Today the Babbs Bridge in Maine remains one of the oldest covered bridge in the state that is still standing.
