Babinda Boulders - North Queensland - Aerial View
We visited the Babinda Boulders just south of Cairns. It is a very short walk from the car park and fine with little kids. There is a great picnic place by the water and one can walk further up stream to different viewing platforms.

Devil's Pool or Babinda Boulders is a natural pool at the confluence of three streams among a group of boulders near Babinda, Queensland, Australia.
The feature is regarded as cursed in local folklore due to the substantial number of deaths that have occurred there; a popular story involves a curse placed by an Aboriginal woman.

One of the BEST free camps we have come across on our travels!! The swimming hole here at the boulders is so Amazing!!! The campground has showers and toilets and it's only a short stroll down for a swim. One of the BEST - check it out!!!

The mystery of the cursed devil's pool of Australia. In this video we take a look at the mystery of the cursed devils pool of Australia.
The Devil's Pool is a natural pool at the confluence of three streams among a group of boulders near Babinda, Queensland, Australia. Since 1959, 17 young people have lost their lives in the waters of Devil’s Pool. Of these 17 deaths all but one have been young men. While reckless behaviour and treacherous currents may account for a number of drownings in the one location, the high number of deaths of young males in this one swimming hole seems rather extraordinary.

Devil's Pool or Babinda Boulders is a natural pool at the confluence of three streams among a group of boulders near Babinda, Queensland, Australia.
urrounded by lush rainforest, the Babinda Boulders is an icon Cairns attraction and popular swimming hole and tourist attraction south of Cairns. It is a classic example of the fast flowing tropical creeks in the area that are perfect for afternoon dips in the cool water to combat the tropical heat.
The creek is lined with huge boulders and the clear fresh water weaves between the obstacles to fill large pools where people can swim. Visitors to the Babinda Boulders are often amazed that the water is quite cool, even during mid-summer.

Just a quick overnight camp with my grand children right near some top swimming holes up here in Far North Queensland.
Babinda Boulders - Rock Jumping
We had an absolute ball at Babinda Boulders, Babinda in Far North Queensland with another travelling family by the name of 'The Great Australian Cannon Ball Run!'
The water depth was really deceiving, so we were able to jump off this big boulder into the surrounding water. We also spotted a Red Belly Black snake in the bush behind, plus the Horse Flies were horrendous.
Just 100m up the road is one of the BEST FREE CAMPS we've found so far! It was nestled in a gorgeous rainforest setting, surrounded by mountains and even had toilets, showers and bins on site!

It rates as one of the wettest spots in Australia, which is perfect because this might well be Far North Queensland's best waterhole.
Nestled in the rainforested foothills of Mt Bartle Frere - Queensland's highest mountain at 1622m - Babinda Boulders lies about 60km south of Cairns. It's a magical place where enormous granite boulder divert the flow of Babinda Creek into deep, transparent pools shaded by a lush, rainforest canopy.
Except on the hottest of summer days the water is shockingly cold, but I can never, ever resist a swim, even at first light. There simply is no other way I'd rather start the day.
Another big attraction is the free community campground within easy walking distance of the creek - a handful of shady sites with toilets, tables, wood barbecues and cold water showers. There's a picnic area by the water and a walking track leads to Devils Pool Lookout (940m return).
This incredible spot is particularly alluring over the hot and humid wet season, but that's when sudden downpours can turn Babinda Creek into a dangerous torrent. An Aboriginal Yidinydji tribe story warns of the beautiful young maiden named Oolana who beckons visitors into the creek's raging wet season flow, never to be seen again.

Managed to visit Babinda Boulders about 1 hour south from Cairns on our way to Japan this year. Nothing like hitting some rockpools and resetting before some big overseas adventures! Here's a little bit of what it looks like from above..
