Whale watching in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte
Local fisherman spotted several whales very near the shore in Barangay Pasaleng in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte last April 2. In fear that they were stranded in the area, they immediately alerted the authorities. The whales however were in no danger and they moved farther in the sea but close enough for the people to enjoy watching them dive and surface.
After seeing the photos of the whales online, a team of humpback whale experts from Balyena.org, led by AG Saño, visited the area where the whales were sighted. The team conducted interviews with the residents of Barangay Pasaleng and found out that whales have been sighted yearly for decades, especially around Holy Week. The researchers were told that the locals heard stories about the whales from their parents. The fisherfolks themselves even hear whale songs and, at first, thought they were ghosts. They have developed a superstition that whales bring in more fish catch for the community.
According to Saño, whales come to the Philippines to give birth because of its warm waters. The documented whales in Pasaleng last April 2 consists of an adult male and female and one calf (baby whale) which they were probably training how to dive and breathe. Although when the residents first spotted the whales in March 31, they were able to count 10 whales in the area. The whales stayed in the vicinity for five days.
Because of the incredible size of humpback whales (they could reach up to 16 meters in length) and the over-protectiveness of nursing humpback whales, the researchers advised the locals not to get near them to avoid being injured by a flick of the whale's fins or tail. Since the whales in Pasaleng can be seen by the naked eye from the shore, tourists can enjoy watching them even from the beach.
Balyena.org strives to identify each whale that passes in Philippine waters. Each fluke or tail of a humpback whale is distinct, like fingerprints in humans. When they compared the photos of the Pagudpud whale's fluke with their catalog of other fluke photos, they were able to identify it from previous sightings in Babuyan Islands from the early 2000's. Nicknamed Lagarista, the Pagudpud whale was last seen by the researchers in 2006.
With the discovery of this new area for whale sightings, Balyena.org plans to conduct regular whale research and conservation efforts in Ilocos Norte.

Cagayan North Seg1
Cagayan is a province of the Philippines in the Cagayan Valley region in Luzon. Its capital is Tuguegarao City and is located at the northeastern corner of the island of Luzon. Cagayan also includes the Babuyan Islands to the north. The province borders Ilocos Norte and Apayao to the west, and Kalinga and Isabela to the south. Cagayan province is distinct from the city in Mindanao named Cagayan de Oro, and is far away from Cagayancillo of Palawan or Cagayan de Tawi-Tawi Island in the Sulu Sea. Present day chroniclers say that the name was derived from the word tagay, a kind of plant that grows abundantly in the northern part of the province. Thus, Catagayan which means a place where the tagay grows abundantly was shortened to Cagayan, the present name of the province.
Calayan Island 3 Philippines
The municipality's name came from the #Ibanag language, literally mean where #laya (#ginger) is abounded. A mission headquarters was established on #CalayanIsland in #1722. During the Spanish colonial administration regime, the administrators were #DonLicerioDuerme in #1896, #DonPedroAbad in #1897, and #DonAngelEscalante during 1898–1902.
Administratively, the Calayan island was part of the #Batanes group of islands. From #1902, Calayan was brought under #CagayanProvince. However, this change of administrative control resulted in isolation of the #islanders as transport communications were lacking. In #1916, #FrayAndresSanchez and #FrayGeronimoMorer, #DominicanFathers, visited this island and gave the island its name. It was only in #1954 that the #GovernorofCagayan, #JoseP.Carag, came to Calayan. The next visit by a governor was only in #1981, by #JustinianoPCortez, when a mobile government was organized to improve the health conditions of the people and to distribute medicine and food items such as rice, canned goods, and seeds. A repeat of this mission occurred in 1982.
In #1940, during #WorldWarII, #AmericanForces, who came by the #USSPrinceton, occupied the island. This was welcomed by the people of Calayan as it ushered prosperity to the island as well as provision of medicine, clothing and other items of utility. Schools were established by the American forces and they also functioned as teachers with English as the medium of instruction. They also introduced adult education programmers. In return, the #Calayanos offered gifts to the soldiers such as #ancientjars, sea shells and handicrafts. On 8 December #1941, the Calayan group of islands became occupied by #JapaneseImperialForces. During the early liberation period in 1944, the combined Filipino and American Forces seized the Japanese garrison, and moved the Japanese prisoners to concentration camps in Luzon.
Rocky northern shore of Calayan Island with the capsized #Philippinefrigate during the #typhoonClara (#September1981)
The rocky northern coast line of the Calayan Island was the scene of a disaster when the warship #DatuKalantiaw, which had served during World War II and subsequently under the Philippine flag, was hit by Typhoon Clara. The ship ran aground on 21 September 1981. Rescue and recovery operations were launched by the ammunition ship #USSMountHood together with the #PhilippineNavy units in a most adverse weather environment, and could recover only 49 bodies of the 79 who perished (presumably other 30 bodies were not recovered) which were taken to Manila to be handed over to the next of kin of the dead.
Calayan Island is located about 24 miles (39 km) west-south-west of #BabuyanIsland off the north coast of the Philippines and belongs to the Babuyan Islands group in the #ChinaSea. The island is hemmed between #Aparri and #Batanes islands and it is larger than the #FugaIsland, which is 25 miles (40 km) away. It is the second district in the province of Cagayan and its 29th municipality.
The #landarea of the island is 494.53 square kilometres (190.94 sq mi). It has a rough rectangular shape with rolling hills, spread over a length of 23 kilometres (14 mi). The island consists mainly of mountainous and uneven land, with the highest land in the centre, with low gaps in places. The hill ridge runs through the middle of the island and is heavily forested. The #MtCalayan which was once an #activevolcano is the highest peak here. The island is of volcanic origin and has rich deposits of #perlite, a #greyishwhiterock which is called as the #wonderrock. There are rocky shores and white sand beaches. Four rivers drain the island. #Corallimestones are seen at both the higher and lower levels of the island. The eastern part of the island has #basalticcolumns, which are seen in a good state of preservation.
The populated areas on the island are #Calayantown (Centro) and #Magsidel on the south coast. Calayan town is the largest among the Babuyan Island group and it is a small fishing center. The #PortofCalayan is used for shipping goats, hogs, cattle and timber.
There are three floodplains where rice is cultivated. Tidal coral flats that protect the sandy beaches between the settlements of #Dilam and #Dibay are also a distinct feature. The present access is by outrigger boats locally called #lampitaw, which takes the islanders from Calayan to the #PortofAparri and #PortofClaveria on the west coast of the Cagayan Province where an airport to operate small aircraft is already constructed.

Trekking to Cape Engano at Palaui Island
Palaui Island Palaui Island lies off the northwestern part of a large promontory in San Vicente, in the municipality of Santa Ana, Cagayan province. It is 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) at its longest and about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) at its widest and moderately high. The western shore of the island appears bold, but on the eastern side, a reef projects from its side for 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi), the edge of it being 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) from and extending around the small islet of Escucha, east of Palaui.
Among the destinations in the Palaui is the northern point of the island is the Cape Engaño Lighthouse which is situated at Cape Engaño the northern point of the island[5] and its beaches. The island is the tenth entry in CNN's World's 100 Best Beaches list which was published on May 13, which remarked the island's raw beauty[6]
On June 22, 2018, the Palaui Island Protected Landscape and Seascape was designated a national park through the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System (ENIPAS) Act or Republic Act No. 11038.[7] In January 2019, the island won the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Community-Based Tourism Award for 2019-2021 for promoting sustainable tourism through the efforts of the island’s environmental group, the Palaui Environmental Protectors Association (PEPA).
Santa Ana Cagayan is about 465 kms from Manila roughly about 15-16 hrs ride by car or you can book a flight to Tuguegarao then ride a bus for 150 kms to Santa Ana Cagayan.
We started our trip at the port of San Vicente by hiring a motor boat(can carry 10-15 heads) for 2500 for a 20 mins ride to Sitio Punta Verde. That amount is inclusive of going back plus 350 pesos reservation fee if you plan to stay for more than a day.At sitio Punta Verde you have to register and pay environmental fee plus 300 pesos for a tour guide.Home stay is available at Punta Verde but we opted to have our home stay at sitio Mabulbol which is about 2 hrs hike more from sitio Punta Verde because its nearer to Cape Engano(about 2 hrs trek). We had our homestay at Sitio Mabulbol at ate Rona's Sunrise Resort (0926 960 6138).Rate is about 250/head with generator during night, exclusive of food. You can arrange your meals with ate Rona.Cp signal and data is good (Globe). We had sunset and early night photoshot at Cape Engano so we paid additional 1k to our bankero to fetch us fromCape Engano to our homestay because trekking during night time is prohibited. We also visited a Falls about an hour trek frome our home stay. There are 2 treks to cape Engano. The easier one is along the coast line which we took.If your purpose of visit is just to see Cape Engano and its Lagoon, you can hire a motor boat for 3500.Its about 1 hr ride, and stay there the whole day and return back to San Vicente in the afternoon.Nice Hotels are available at Santa Ana Cagayan. You can also arrange for island hoping to crocodile island,Snake Island and the white Aguib Beach.

In the eighteenth century, groups of Ilocano-speaking immigrants arrived in several waves by sea and land, gradually displacing the Aeta in the lowland areas.
Wangag was given ecclesiastical recognition on 23 February 1869, as a barrio of the Municipality of #Buguey. In 1917 it was renamed #Rumangay (Ilocano for 'to be #progressive'). The following year, it was renamed after the #FirstFilipinoGovernorofCagayan, #GracioPGonzaga. The town was officially partitioned from Buguey on 1 January 1918 via Executive Order of #GovernorGeneral #FrancisBurtonHarrison.
#Economy
Gonzaga is primarily an agricultural municipality, with more than half of the workforce employed primarily as either farmers or fishers. Approximately 5,500 hectares (14,000 acres) of agricultural land are currently under production, the majority of which are dedicated to rice farming.
