Bac Ha Vietnam 2017
Bac Ha is the most beautiful and interesting place to visit in North Vietnam.
Markets full of colorful ethnic tribes people. Can Cau Saturday market was my favorite and is a must see.
I stayed at the Ngan Nga Hotel which is spotlessly clean and serves the best food in town.. The manager Mr Dong speaks good English and he is very helpful.
The scenery around Bac Ha is stunning. Bac Ha is about an 8 hour bus ride from Hanoi. 3 hours from Sapa.

Ngan Nga Bac Ha Hotel - Bac Ha, Vietnam
This video is about Ngan Nga Bac Ha Hotel - Bac Ha, Vietnam.
The Hub of Bac Ha. And Mr. Dong runs the show… A great hotel. Superb service. Good food. A cool vibe and a hopping place on Saturday’s and Sunday’s, not to mention a quiet, comfortable base for the rest of the week.
Best of all the Bac Ha Market is a block away.
I skipped the tourist hordes in Sapa for four nights at the Ngan Nga Bac Ha Hotel in Bac Ha. I had one goal going in - get up at 5:00 AM and watch the Sunday Market awaken. To do so, I needed to be in Bac Ha on Saturday night. Lonely Planet doesn’t say much about Sleeping in Bac Ha, and Trip Advisor features mixed reviews on the Ngan Nga Bac Ha Hotel. I was booking late, things were filling up, so I took a flier, and emailed Mr. Dong.
I must’ve fired off five email questions in the span of 24 hours to Mr. Dong…within fifteen minutes, each was answered efficiently and respectfully. Mr. Dong speaks excellent English, is all business, and he’s got that place motoring on all cylinders.
The property itself, which is disparaged in some of the T.A. reviews as bland or unkempt, is in fact refreshing. Wood, wood and more wood - reminds of the back country up in Northern Michigan. Big fat open windows reach to the street, eight or nine sturdy wooden tables fill up the small downstairs bar, with two more out on the front porch; it all hugs reception, and with the upstairs steps hanging over the scene creates a beehive of activity. Especially on Sundays. The place absolutely rocks with energy on Sunday. And at the center, every day, every night, Mr. Dong mans the desk and phone. The owner - an old guy - who doesn’t speak a lick of English - has a great sense of humor - sis at the front table, sips tea and pours a cup for anybody who would like to join him.
I loved this place. The rooms were clean and they are big. AC and/or fans both work well. Water pressure and temp is right on. Each of the front rooms features a decent sized balcony that hangs out over the street. Breakfast comes with the package - coffee on the outside table as early as 6:00 AM, and the restaurant food either upstairs on floors three and four, or in the ground level hive is excellent and reasonably price. The entire stay is affordable. Thirty to Thirty five bucks for the weekend. Twenty to Twenty five off the weekend…either time its good deal.
I highly recommend the Ngan Nga Bac Ha Hotel. And for sure, reserve on Saturday, so that you can wake up at 5:00 AM, walk a block to the Market, grab a bench,, sip Vietnamese coffee, and watch it all wake up.

Bac Ha Market - Part 1
A video of my trip to the Bac Ha Sunday market in northwestern Vietnam on 23 May 2010. The Sunday market is very popular with tourist because of the large number of Flower H'mong hill tribe members that trek in from the surrounding villages. The costumes of the Flower H'mong women are perhaps the most colorful of the hill tribes in Vietnam. This first of two videos concentrates on the live animal portion of the market. The best way to visit the market is to take the Saturday night train from Hanoi to Lao Cai (arrives around 5 AM) and drive to Bac Ha, arriving at the market just before 7 AM when it is starting to get into full swing (with animals and hill tribe women still filing in) but all the tour buses have not yet arrived. Enjoy!

Hoang A Tuong Palace - Bac Ha - Vietnam
Brief History of Hoàng A Tưởng Palace
Hoàng A Tưởng Palace was built in 1914 and completed in 1921. Hoàng Yến Chao was from the ethnic Tày group, he was the father of Hoàng A Tưởng. He decided to build this Palace for himself. After nearly 100 years of existence, it is still standing between the majestic land known as the White Highland and the Sun.
During his reign from 1905 - 1953, with the protection of France, Hoàng Yến Chao owned much of the fertile land in this area, and had the full right to exploit the surrounding forests and native products. He established a tax regime that required all of the people to pay tax on the products that they grew or made. He also had a monopoly on the sale of salt, drugs, food and other consumer goods, considered essential necessities in the region. During his long reign, he accumulated a huge amount of assets. Based on economic strength, in 1914 he decided to build this Palace to represent his wealth and power.
In order to prepare for the construction of this Palace, Hoàng Yến Chao had to plan very carefully. First he consulted with Chinese feng-shui experts to find the best location to build the Palace. The site was selected according to the Feng-shui theory of location. It was built on a large hill, facing south east, protected on both sides by mountains, the front has a spring and facing the mountain named Mother is holding her baby . Overall the topography in the area is beautiful, a charming painting, capturing the picturesque views and perfect Asian climate.
The building materials used, including the bricks and tiles were produced by skilled artisans from China. They were meticulous produced from land selection, to fired in the oven kiln. Iron, steel and cement were transferred from the low land.
