Beautiful view on Havana from the roof of the Bacardi Building
From the roof of the Bacardi building we had a wonderful view of Havana and the roof was full laundry, antennes and water reservoirs. The Bacardi building in Havana is located on Avenida de Belgica 261 between Empedrado and San Juan de Dios in Old Havana. The building was designed by the architects Rafael Fernández Ruenes, Esteban Rodríguez Castell and Jose Menendez for the Bacardi rum company. The art deco building was completed in 1930 and was at that time the largest building in Havana. After the Cuban revolution and the departure of Bacardi from Cuba the building remained in use as an office. The renovation of the exterior was almost finished and the building
looked lovely. The entrance was beautifully decorated with marble and stained glass. We were shocked on the top floor of the poor state of repair. The balcony was full of cracks so we didn`t dare leaning against the edge.

How do you get a sky-high view of Havana? It all starts with rum, of course! Bacardi builds a tall, art deco building, abandons it after the revolution, and years later Ken and Karen go to the top of it. All according to Fidel's plan (?).

BACARDÍ presents the birth of the Cuba Libre, Havana, Cuba, 1900
Ever wondered how the famous Cuba Libre got it's name? Let us take you back to the end of the Spanish American war, Havana 1900. Take some proud Cuban men, fill the glasses with ice and a fresh wedge of lime. Add Bacardi and an American cola never mixed together until this day, and toast to a newly found freedom with the first 'Cuba Libre'.
Bacardi: The Story Behind Cuba's Legendary Liquor Brand
Bacardi is the largest privately held, family-owned spirits company in the world. Originally known for its Bacardi white rum, it now has a portfolio of more than 200 liquor and spirits labels. Here's how they did it!
Don Facundo Bacardi emigrated to Cuba from Spain in 1830. Arriving as a wine merchant he set up as a grocer in the 1840s and was experimenting with distillation by 1852 trying to improve the quality of the local rum by trying various technical experiments in distillation and aging.
Bacardi would go on to witness the Independence of Cuba and the Batista revolution, during which its assets got seized by the Castro regime. Despite the setback, Bacardi remains one of the most successful liquor and spirits brands in the world, owning hundreds of quality labels, including the rights to sell Havana Club in the US.

SIEMPRE EN MI CORAZON
compositor: Ernesto Lecuona

(Lyrics)
Estas en mi corazon,
aunque estoy lejos de ti,
y es el tormento mayor,
esta fatal separacion...
Estas en mi corazon,
y en mi amarga soledad,
el recuerdo de tu amor,
disminuye mi penar...
Yo bien se que nunca mas,
en mis brazos estaras,
prisionera de un cariño
que fue toda mi ilusion,
pero nada ha de poder,
que te deje de querer,
porque como unica dueña,
estas en mi corazon.
Estas en mi corazon,
y en mi amarga soledad,
el recuedo de tu amor,
disminuye mi penar....
Yo bien se que nunca mas,
en mis brazos estaras,
prisionera de un cariño,
que fue toda mi ilusion,
pero nadie ha de poder,
que te deje de querer,
porque como unica dueña,
estas en mi corazon...

BACARDI BUILDING- Havana: the year 1920 began the construction of this magnificent architectural jewel, representative of the Art Decó in fashion at that time. The building was designed by the architects Esteban Rodriguez Castells, Rafael Fernandez Ruenes and Jose Menendez.
Its construction cost about 400,000 pesos and last 5 years. At that moment, the tip of its main tower was the highest point of Cuba. The famous bat, symbol of the family and logo of the drink brand crowns this tower. The granite used in this construction was imported from Bavaria and Norway.
MANHATTAN IN HAVANA: The Lopez-Serrano Bldg.
Lopez Serrano Building Built: 1932
Architect: Ricardo Mira & Miguel Rosich
Location: Vedado
The Lopez Serrano, built in 1932 by the office of Ricardo Mira and Miguel Rosich on Thirteenth and L, was among the first skyscrapers in El Vedado. Its vertical piers are stressed in the art deco manner of North American examples. According to Narisco G. Menocal, professor in the art department at the University of Wisconsin, its design closely follows that of the apartment block at One Fifth Avenue in New York City. This project was by Harvey Wiley Corbett, main partner at the firm of Helme, Corbett & Harrison. The Lopez Serrano rises ten floors, with another four in the step-back; it has a steel structure and brick walls. The ground plan is H-shaped for the sake of maximum illumination and ventilation in the apartments, of which there are eight on each standard floor.

Old Havana (Spanish: La Habana Vieja) is the city-center (downtown)
Havana (/həˈvænə/; Spanish: La Habana) is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city proper has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, land it spans a total of 728.26 km2 (281.18 sq mi) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure-laden Spanish galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592.Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish–American War.
Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado and the newer suburban districts. The city is the center of the Cuban government, and home to various ministries, headquarters of businesses and over 90 diplomatic offices. The current mayor is Marta Hernández from the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).In 2009, the city/province had the 3rd highest income in the country.
The city attracts over a million tourists annually, the Official Census for Havana reports that in 2010 the city was visited by 1,176,627 international tourists,[12] a 20.0% increase from 2005. The historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The city is also noted for its history, culture, architecture and monuments.
