THE BACHKOVO MONASTERY,BULGARIA
The Bachkovo Monastery Assumption of the Virgin is located in the southern part of the village Bachkovo, 10 kilometers south of Asenovgrad. The monastery was founded in 1083 by the Georgian Gregoriy Bakuriani, who donated the land. For a long time the monastery was Georgian. The two-story ossuary some 400 meters from the monastery was built during the monastery's earliest days.
At the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century, The Holy Archangels Church was built, for services during the winter months. It was attached to the terrace on the second floor of the west wing where the monks had their cells. It is thought that after the fall of Bulgaria to the Ottomans at the end of the 14th century, Eftimiy, Bulgaria's last patriarch, was exiled to the Bachkovo Monastery.
Construction on the new monastery began at the end of the 16th century, most likely with the eastern wing and the fortified main entrance. In 1601, the southern wing was rebuilt, where the refectory now stands, with its spacious dining area and marble table. Visitors will note that the year of the table's construction is carved on it. In 1864, a mural was painted on the northern wall of the dining hall, The Presentation of the Miraculous Icon. In 1604, The Assumption of the Virgin Cathedral was constructed, which has three naves, an apse, a narthex, and a cupola.

Bachkovo Monastery, Koprivshtitsa: Historical Sites of Bulgaria
Bachkovo monastery and Koprivshtitsa are two worth seeing historical sites in Central Bulgaria. Each one can be reached in about one hour car ride from the ancient city of Plovdiv ( the second largest city of Bulgaria ).
Koprivshtitsa is one of the most charming small Bulgarian towns, still preserving the atmosphere of the National Revival period. It was one of the centers of the April Uprising in 1876 and is known for its authentic Bulgarian architecture and for its folk music festivals, making it a very popular tourist destination.

Bachkovo monastery is the second large Bulgarian monastery. It is located on the right bank of the breathtaking Chepelare River. The monastery was founded in 1083 by the Byzantine military commander of Georgian origin, Grigorii Bakuriani.
The bone-vault is a must-see building there because of its unique wall-paintings which rank among the most valuable works of Orthodox art of the 11th --12th century.

A bit foggy but still beautiful day for flying, after the Asenova Krepost we visited one of the Big Three monasteries in Bulgaria - Bachkovski Monastery. I've already flied over the Troyan Mondastery so only the Rilski Monastery is left for me to capture from the air and i'm sure this will happen in near future. I haven't visited Bachkovo Monastery since I was a kid and was very pleasant for me to return here. Bachkovo, Bulgaria 17.03.2018

The Kalaidzhi bride market takes place in the southeast of Bulgaria every year. Unmarried women are often paired off with financially strong men.
But more and more young Roma are rebelling against the old tradition. For young Kalaidzhi the annual bride market at Bachkovo Monastery is the only chance to find a partner. Their Orthodox Christian faith and traditional code of conduct prohibit them from dating, flirting or having any other pre-marital relations. The Kalaidzhi - a name meaning tinsmiths or boilermakers - marry only within the group. Finding a spouse from outside - and in particular a non-Roma Bulgarian - is out of the question. Love is only a secondary consideration. What matters is the dowry. A growing number of young Roma, however, are rebelling against the traditional marriage market. They want to make their own decisions, and to love and marry the person of their choice. For girls especially - some as young as 15 when they are put up for marriage - the wedding is the end of self-determined life. They will subsequently be housewives and mothers. The film accompanies 17-year-old Teni and 19-year-old Maria in the week before the market day. For them it means buying a lot of new clothes and masses of other preparations. Can this be a way to find true love? And how is the outdated ritual affected by the Internet and social media?
