Charlotte Amalie - St.Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Visit Charlotte Amalie In The Virgin Islands. This is the tram to Paradise Point, where you get a breathtaking view of Charlotte Amalie Harbor and the downtown area.

The hilly town of Charlotte Amalie has a long and turbulent history dating back to the eighteenth century. It has been a Dutch colony, but now belongs to the United States and is a popular tourist spot. Visit the town to do some shopping, to explore historic buildings, or to combine both. Hire the services of a guide or tour the streets using a map and follow your own path.

In fact, mixing the two pastimes is easy. Many old buildings have been turned into restaurants, shops, and hotels. Others have been renovated many times due to fires and hurricanes which have frequently wiped-out huge portions of beloved structures. Others stand in place of originals which were built during the earliest days of colonization.

On our island trip in St. Thomas we were picked up by the Carnival Victory and drove to the capital Charlotte Amalie. We explored the main street and the harbor quarter on our own. We had a great panorama afterwards on the trip to the mountain top, the highest mountain on the island. We stopped several times to enjoy the view, had a view of Magens Bay Beach, one of the top 10 beaches in the world and took great photos. On Beacon Point, a viewpoint with souvenir shops we had a good overview of the island world. At the Coral World Ocean Park, we relaxed two hours on the beach before heading back across the East End of St.Thomas to the Red Hook Ferry Dock, a beautiful cruise stop!

Bei unserem Landausflug in Saint Thomas wurden wir von der Carnival Victory abgeholt und fuhren zur Hauptstadt Charlotte Amalie. Wir erkundeten die Hauptstrasse und das Hafenviertel auf eigene Faust. Tolles Panorama hatten wir danach auf der Fahrt zum Mountain Top, dem höchsten Berg der Insel. Wir hielten mehrmals um die Aussicht zu genießen, hatten den Blick auf Magens Bay Beach, einem der top 10 Beaches der Welt und machten tolle Fotos. Auf dem Beacon Point, einen Aussichtspunkt mit Souvenirladen hatten wir einen guten Überblick über die Inselwelt. Am Coral World Ocean Park relaxten wir zwei Stunden am Strand, bevor es über das East End von St.Thomas zum Red Hook Ferry Dock zurück ging, ein wunderschöner Cruise Stop!

Arrival into Saint Thomas harbor early in the morning and docked at the the Crown Bay pier.
A walking tour of Charlotte Amalie's primary historic sights from Kronprindsens Gade.
When walking down Main Street the buildings on the sea side of the road are narrow and long with alleys separating them. These buildings were warehouses for storing goods during the heyday of the Danish Sugar trade in Saint Thomas.
Continuing to Government Hill and to Government House in Kongens Gade -a neoclassical white structure with intricate ironwork along the balconies.
Passing the 99 steps - These steps were built in the mid 1700s, by the Danes, who found streets of steps to be the easiest way to climb up and down the steep hills of Charlotte Amalie.
Located on Tolbod Gade is Emancipation Park with the statue of Danish King Christian IX. The park was named in commemoration of the July 3rd, 1848 emancipation of slaves in the Danish West Indies.

No matter how the money is made, a good place to spend it is in nearby St. Thomas, the shopping capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands. St. Thomas is a free port, where each person can purchase $800 worth of goods duty free. The most popular items are liquor, fashions and jewelry.
The U.S. Virgin Islands were purchased in 1917 from Denmark to help protect the Panama Canal. Today, St. Thomas is thoroughly developed, but it still retains its natural beauty. It has fine white beaches, great sport fishing and diving, and excellent restaurants.
It is the most populous of the three U.S. Virgins, which include St. Croix and St. John, and is geared toward cruise ship passengers. In the high season, as many as five ships a day put into port at Charlotte Amalie, and the streets take on a carnival atmosphere.

St Thomas Virgin Islands Excursion: Ecotour Kayak, Hike and Snorkeling

Our shore excursion in Saint Thomas,Virgin Islands was with Virgin Islands Ecotours. Once we got off the Carnival Valor we took a ride in an open air taxi to the other side of St Thomas Island. At Ecotours we did the 3 hour mangrove lagoon Kayaking, hiking and snorkeling tour. We paddled to The Cas Cay Wildlife sanctuary where we saw a crazy number of Blue soldier hermit crabs or Caribbean hermit crabs scurrying on the ground and hiked to a blow hole it the rocks. At the blow hole we got to handle a sea urchin and a chiton. After that we snorkeled on the lagoon side of the breakers then kayaked back. You Must Visit Trunk Bay US Virgin Islands National Park - St. John USVI : Ep.15

In this video I explore The U.S. Virgin Islands on my Princess Cruises Stop in St. Thomas. The original plan was to take a shuttle to Magen's Bay on the north side of St. Thomas but after over hearing a group mention that they heading to St. John to visit a place called Trunk Bay, I changed my plans.

One of the great things about the USVIs is that you have excellent cell coverage since you are in a US territory. It was easy to look up pictures of Trunk Bay before I committed to the trip. For those that plan to venture to St. John from St. Thomas you will want to take a ferry from Redhook to Cruz Bay. Round trip tickets will cost you about $18.00 USD. Upon arriving at Cruz Bay you will find several Safari-style taxi trucks that will get you to your Beach destination of choice. For around $10-$20 you can enjoy an open-air ride along the coast. Be sure to have your camera out as the views are awesome. After about 1.5 hours of travel from the cruise ship we finally arrived at the US Virgin Islands National Park. As we exited the safari truck I could tell this was a good choice. The park has lots of tropical plants and palm trees complete with a snorkel gear rental shop right at the entrance.

Don't be surprised if the first sight of the beach takes your breath away. This place is majestic... A true paradise. I was seriously in awe of the natural beauty and I couldn't wait to get in the water. This may sound lame but the warmth and natural beauty of this beach is almost spiritual. For any corporate 9-5'ers that grind away their lives in a stuffy office building, this place just really sets your soul free.

Once I entered the turquoise water I knew I was in for a great snorkel session. For the more experienced swimmers I highly recommend you swim about 200 yards around the bend to the right and explore the less populated reef by the cliff. There was no other swimmers over on that side, just pristine untouched reef with a huge variety of fish. I was in heaven. At one
point I just rested on the surface of the water looking down at the virgin untouched reef and I had to pinch myself. It was so surreal. The ocean was speaking to me and it was saying, Tyler, you need to leave those cold rocky mountains and come live close to me! LOL! I have not quite been able to make this happen but I'm working on it.

After a return to the beach I made the trek back to the cruise ship and arrived 5 minutes before departure. So glad I made it back. I hope to visit again soon. I really enjoyed my time in the USVIs.

I can not recommend this place enough. It was such a wonderful place to discover.
