Book the medieval knife making experience with Backstreet Academy:
In December 2018, I booked an experience with Backstreet Academy and learned how to make knife the traditional way. We didn't only bring back beautiful handmade knives home but also had a truly special experience. Connecting with the locals is what I always look for when I visit a new destination. Backstreet Academy offers exactly that. If you want to read my full review, visit the blog post!

Phnom Penh : Urban Street Art Boeung Kak Lake
Phnom Penh : Boeung kak lake ( lakeside) was a popular backpacker area in the 1990's early 2000's with many busy guesthouse's.
But that all came to a sudden end in 2010 when the lake was filled in by developers.
Now in Street 93 you can walk around and admire the street art.For first timers to the area it may be difficult to find,I will but the Google maps location below.

Backstreet tour of Phnom Penh's flourishing urban art scene
(20 Oct 2017) LEADIN:
Two young artists are introducing visitors to Phnom Penh's colourful street art, with guided tours of the city's graffiti and murals.
The city's street art scene is still in its infancy but it's already flourishing, with local artists' work appearing alongside some international names.
STORY-LINE:
Taking a tuk-tuk ride through the Cambodian capital.
But this trip is heading off the beaten track to search out the city's street art.
Phnom Penh Art Tour is run by David Myers and his friend and fellow architecture student Kimchean Koy.
The two 19-year-olds are better known as the street artist duo 'Koy & Davido'.
They offer several pre-planned routes to choose from, taking in artworks that usually remain hidden in the backstreets of this rapidly evolving city.
The reason my friend and I decided to create the art tour was to really like, basically expose the locals, as well as generally just people living in Phnom Penh, that there's a rising urban art scene in the city and that there are sort of, these artists who are going sort of painting on walls and just really showcasing and bringing art to the people outside, like, showcasing that you know, art doesn't have to be in a confined space, it can be anywhere, says Myers.
The first stop on the tour is the Lakeside district, which is one of the poorest in the city.
Many of the buildings here are abandoned and the authorities turn a blind eye to graffiti.
Unauthorised murals in more upscale areas are usually removed very quickly.
What's interesting about this building is that, in the past years and earlier in the years it was, the art changes constantly, but at the moment, it's hard to get access into the building because it's locked up, but you can sort of see different artists putting up their artworks with international artists sort of putting throw-ups or graffiti and tags and then you have Khmer artists who paint murals onto the building as well, says Myers.
The tours give people an opportunity to meet some of the artists, including local Hom Vannak, who collects bottles and cans to earn a living and paints in his spare time.
This painting is an ode to a Cambodian cartoon that was on television when I was a child called The Rabbit and the Fox. I would walk to a nearby hospital to watch it on their black-and-white TV. Then as I got older I was inspired by the artistic value of the cartoon which was handmade using basic tools, he says.
Phnom Penh's street artists range from well known international artists to locals and amateurs like Hom.
Myers says the aim of the tours is to help more people to appreciate the beauty to be discovered on the city's less travelled paths and change local attitudes towards street artists' work.
Myers wants the paintings, murals and graffiti to be seen as a valuable part of the city's cultural life, instead of a form of vandalism.
To further that aim, artists are being asked to reference Cambodia's traditional culture in their murals and to avoid painting culturally sensitive images like ghosts and demons.
The tour continues on foot down hidden alleys visitors would struggle to find on their own.
There are works by artists such as FONKI, Esao Andrews, Peap Tarr and Theo Vallier. All are either Cambodians or foreigners with close ties to the Kingdom.
So over here we have the work of Esao Andrews, says Myers. He's an American artist who came with the festival - the Bonn Phum - back in 2015. And what you see here is sort of a ship done by him using brush work. So you can sort of see the brush strokes and see the thin lines all done by sort of, just different types of brush.
The street art tour is hoping to support the city's young street art scene to keep growing into the future.

Knife Sharpener - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
This guy walks around the streets of Phnom Penh with his wooden stall and sharpening stone. Residents attract his attention either with a loud cry or a wave of the hand. They then present him with their blunt knives to sharpen, which cost approx 1000 riels (25 cents) each.
Discovering the Best Temples of Cambodia with Kids - World School Travel Video
In this Family Travel Vlog it was time to say farewell to Singapore and fly the family over to Siem Reap, Cambodia, where you can find one of the wonders of the world, Angkor Wat as well as numerous other temples that are straight out of Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider. I just don’t have time to put everything we did into one vlog so here is the first of a few...
✈ Subscribe to our Family Travel Vlog to see where we're off to next:
We first had to make the short flight from Singapore to Siem Reap, Cambodia, where we were met by someone from our hotel. After a quick drive, we were at the Central Suite Residence right in the heart of downtown, which I have never stayed in and was pleasantly convenient. After a quick tour of our hotel, we went off for dinner and some fish massages.
The next day we decided to take it easy. We had plenty of days to tour the temples, so we opted for another cooking class. It was...not quite the same caliber as the one we went to in Bangkok, but the actual dishes were great and it was a great way to spend a couple of hours so the family could catch up on some relaxation.
Now, I’ve been fortunate to have traveled to Cambodia before so I knew what to expect. I couldn’t wait to share it with the girls as many of the temples still allow you to run around and act out your own versions of an adventure movie. Needless to say, as soon as we got to the temples, the girls were off exploring.
In two days we only made it to 5 temples, as we took our time and the weather didn’t exactly agree with us. We still have many more temples, floating markets, and waterfalls in Cambodia to go explore.
