Book the medieval knife making experience with Backstreet Academy:
In December 2018, I booked an experience with Backstreet Academy and learned how to make knife the traditional way. We didn't only bring back beautiful handmade knives home but also had a truly special experience. Connecting with the locals is what I always look for when I visit a new destination. Backstreet Academy offers exactly that. If you want to read my full review, visit the blog post!

This is an exclusive feature of amazing locals by Backstreet Academy where you can book an exclusive experience with people like the champion boxer you see here.
Backstreet Academy - Meaningful Travel Experiences #worthashot!
Your Next Travel Experience Could Be Offbeat, Immersive, Socially Conscious and Loads of Fun
Backstreet Academy is like Airbnb, but even better: it offers a very local experience to tourists and gives artisans who often have little or no education but have an expert skill set, a chance to earn a living by sharing their art with tourists.
My team and I went to Siem Reap tell Backstreet's story and got to soak up a myriad of experiences.
We got to make some traditional art in the form of iron pencil sketchings and stone carvings.
For the hunter in us, we made knives and crossbows, and for our fashionable side, we made trendy bracelets from copper wire, as well as bags from recycled cement bags and rubber tyres.
We learnt Bokator, traditional Cambodian martial arts, as well as Apsara dancing, the images of which dot the famous Angkor Wat temple complex.
We fished and farmed rice and rode on ox-carts. And we got to round off our Siem Reap experience with an authentic Cambodian spice cocktail-making workshop.
Through Backstreet, I saw that local artisans, not just in Cambodia but elsewhere in Asia, can use their unique - often traditional - skills to earn a living.
I think that's important, so that in years to come, as technology and the human race advances, future generations can still learn about the arts we have now.
Plus, the artisans we met seemed grateful for the opportunity to share their art with us and to use it to earn a living.

How Angkor's Temples were carved
The Angkor Empire wasn't built in a day. It was built by thousands of artisans like Mr Poy Khet's ancestors who handed down knowledge of the craft to him. Today it is at risk of dying out, book an experience with Mr Poy to learn how to carve on stone like the artisans of Angkor hundreds of years ago and help conserve the heritage with a meaningful travel experience. Impact Travel at its best, exclusively on Backstreet Academy.

Knife making in Laos | World Travel Vlog 8 | Luang Prabang
Today we went knife making in Luang Prabang, Laos. We got to work with a master blacksmith who had over 30 years experience to make a bamboo handle knife. The knife was made from a leaf spring out of an old van, which is apparently a very strong type of steel. We found thing course online at: and I would highly recommend this knife making course for anyone looking for things to do in Luang Prabang. We had a lot of fun and learnt a lot!
