Although we pre-purchased Jodhpur-to-Jaisalmer train tickets online through IRCTC, we decided to forgo the train for the comfort and convenience of a car and driver. We booked the car and driver the night before in Jodhpur at a small shop right across the street from Pal Haveli Hotel. We got a great deal on the one-way ride, just 2,600 rupees total!
Our car left Jodhpur at 7:00 am. We expected the drive to take five hours, but we made it in less than four!
Our hotel - 1st Gate Home - Fusion - is literally right next door to Jaisalmer Fort. It was by the far the nicest hotel we stayed at during the entire trip! It's a lot more expensive than other hotels in Jaisalmer but quite the bargain if you compare to similar quality hotels in larger cities like New Delhi or Mumbai. The service was outstanding, the decor was impeccable...We highly recommend staying here! The pool, spa, and yoga room were under construction during our stay, but we imagine they'll making fantastic additions to an already stellar hotel! FYI: Fusion is in the name of the hotel because it is jointly owned by Indians and Italians. This is also why they specialize in Italian dishes like pizza and pasta!
We spent most of the afternoon walking the enchanting streets of the Golden City! We also visited two havelis, which are located right next door to each other. The first is government-owned. It is not furnished, but just the architecture alone is a feast for the eyes. Also, the 360-degree views of the city from the rooftop is unparalleled! The second haveli is a fully furnished museum. We were oohing and aahing at the ornate furniture and wall/ceiling embellishments in every room! We recommend both because they complement each other nicely!
The owner of 1st Gate Home Fusion recommend that we take a rickshaw to Bada Bagh to watch the sunset. Bada Bagh is the site of royal cenotaphs, which we only later learned are empty tombs erected as monuments to a person or people whose remains are elsewhere. Bada Bagh is just 6 km from Jaisalmer's city center and well worth a visit; admission is free.
We had dinner at the open-air restaurant Cafe the Kaku. It has a beautiful view of Jaisalmer Fort, which lights up at night! Sadly, the Fort's lights were randomly not turned on the day we visited. Still, we enjoyed the night time view of the city.
We ended the day by trying crash an Indian wedding...one of Glo's dreams (not necessarily to crash an Indian wedding but to be invited to one)! lol. The part was just getting started when we arrived and we were pretty tired, so we stayed just long enough to take in the beautiful, jovial atmosphere. It was very kind of the bride's father to invite us in for a look! Thank you, sir!!
Many thanks for watching!
Happy travels!!

Beautiful chhatris at Bada Bagh in Jaisalmer
Bada Bagh, also called Barabagh (literally Big Garden) is a garden complex about 6 km north of Jaisalmer on way to Ramgarh, and halfway between Jaisalmer and Lodhruva in the state of Rajasthan in India. It contains a set of royal cenotaphs, or chhatris of Maharajas of Jaisalmer state, starting with Jai Singh II.
Jaisalmer, nicknamed as The Golden city, is a town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located 575 kilometres west from the state capital Jaipur. It was once known as Jaisalmer state. The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples are finely sculptured. It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (great Indian desert) and has a population of about 78,000. It is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District. Once a sleepy desert city, Jaisalmer has transformed itself into a major tourist destination of India. Situated amid picturesque Thar Desert, the Jaisalmer city commands premiere position among the tourist attractions scattered all over the desert land of Rajasthan. The Jaisalmer city is revered both by Indians as well as foreign tourists.
Jaisalmer is named after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer means the Hill Fort of Jaisal. Jaisalmer is sometimes called the Golden City of India because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in every architecture of the city gives a yellowish-golden tinge to the city and its surrounding area. Like various other cities of Rajasthan, you will discover different facets of Jaisalmer as you explore this wonderful city with us. Tough there are historical monuments scattered all over the city but the Jaisalmer Fort will immediately command your attention. Made of sand stones and locally known as Sonar Quila, the Jaisalmer Fort is a dominating structure amidst sands. The Jaisalmer city is also known for its old mansions, better known as Havelis. Among many of them you will find Salim ji ki haveli and Nathmal ji ki haveli as the most striking. There are other monuments too, which are equally important because of their distinct and individual architecture. The amalgamation of ancient and the medieval era architecture will catch your fancy.
Jaisalmer city is a prominent educational as well as cultural hub in the region and regularly showcases the vivid cultural aspects of Rajasthan. Among others, it includes folk dances as well as semi classical and folk music. The city is easily accessible and people are warm and welcoming. In spite of harsh living conditions, Rajasthani people are known for their warm hospitality all over.
