Shalimar Garden in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir

Shalimar Garden or Shalimar Bagh in Srinagar is the largest Mughal garden in Kashmir Valley built by Mughal emperor Jahangir in 1619 A.D. for his wife Empress Nur Jahan. The term Shalimar comes from Sanskrit word which meand Adobe of Love.

The history of Shalimar Garden can be traced back to second century. It is during that time period King Pravarsena II from Vakataka Dynasty who ruled Kashmir from 79 AD till 139 AD. King Pravarsena II was the founder of Srinagar City who build a cottage surrounded by a park closed to Dal lake and named it Shalimar. The King often visit saint Sukaram Swami at Harwan and after his visit the King stays in Shalimar cottage till then the cottage was well maintained. After that without proper maintenance the cottage was ruined and totally was destroyed but the the name Shalimar got stick to the village and the village was called Shalimar itself.

Hari Parbat Fort - a historical monument of Srinagar

Hari Parbat Fort is now a historical monument of Srinagar situated on Hari Parbat hill. Hari Parbat is also known as Mughal Fort.

Hari Parbat is a hill overlooking Srinagar, the largest city and summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the site of a Durrani fort, built in 1808. It has the famous Shakti Temple on the western Slope and Muslim shrines of Khwaja Makhdoom Sahib and Akhund Mullah Shah on the southern slope. On the southern side of the outer wall there is a Gurudwara, which commemorates the visit of Guru Hargobind.

The first fortifications on the site were constructed by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1590. He built an outer wall for the fort, and planned a new capital called Nager Nagor to be built within the wall. That project was never completed. The present fort was built in 1808 under the reign of Shuja Shah Durrani.

Mughal gardens and fountains in Srinagar, Kashmir, India

Shalimar Bagh is a Mughal garden linked through a channel to the northeast of Dal Lake, on its right bank located near Srinagar city in the Jammu and Kashmir. Its other names are Shalamar Garden, Shalamar Bagh, Farah Baksh and Faiz Baksh, and the other famous shore line garden in the vicinity is Nishat Bagh. The Bagh was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jahan, in 1619. The Bagh is considered the high point of Mughal horticulture. It is now a public park.

While the recent history and development of the Mughal types of gardens is credited to Emperor Jahangir, the ancient history of the garden can be traced to the 2nd century when it was built during the reign of Pravarsena II. Praversena II founded the city of Srinagar and ruled in Kashmir from 79 AD to 139 AD. He had built a cottage for his stay at the northeastern corner of the Dal Lake and had named it Shalimar (the meaning of the name remains unknown, Russian scholar Anna Suvorova in her book Lahore: Topophilia of Space and Place has asserted that it is certainly an Arabic or Persian name since a Muslim King would never use a Sanskrit name for a royal garden). The king, on his visits to a local saint by the name Sukarma Swami at Harwan, used to stop at this cottage. Over the years, the cottage fell into ruins and later could not be located. However, the name of the village remained as Shalimar.

It is here that Emperor Jahangir built his celebrated Shalimar Bagh, his dream project to please his queen. He enlarged the ancient garden in 1619 into a royal garden and called it 'Farah Baksh' ('the delightful'). He built it for his wife Nur Jahan ('light of the world'). In 1630, under Emperor Shah Jahan's orders, Zafar Khan the governor of Kashmir got it extended. He named it 'Faiz Baksh' ('the bountiful'). It then became a pleasure place for the Pathan and Sikh governors who followed Zafar Khan.

During the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh the marble pavilion was the guest house for European visitors. Electrification of the premises was done during Maharaja Hari Singh's rule. Thus, over the years, the garden was extended and improved by many rulers and called by different names, but the most popular name 'Shalimar Bagh' continues to this day.

During the Mughal period in particular, Emperor Jahangir and his wife Nur Jahan were so enamoured of Kashmir that during summer they moved to Srinagar with their full court entourage from Delhi at least 13 times. Shalimar Bagh was their imperial summer residence and the Royal Court. They crossed the arduous snowy passes of the Pir Panjal mountain range on elephants to reach Srinagar.

200-year-old Dastageer Sahib shrine gutted

The over 200-year-old shrine of Dastageer Sahib was on Monday gutted in a fire at Khanyar in old city, triggering protests by locals.

An official of the Disaster Management Cell said the fire broke out in the shrine of Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani at around 6.30 AM and engulfed the entire complex within no time.

The holy shrine is in Charar-e-Sharief, a town and a notified area committee in Badgam district in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Charar-e-Sharief is located on the way to Yusmarg, 40 km from Srinagar. This wooden shrine is 600 years old. Most of the shrine and its surroundings were destroyed as a consequence of an armed battle between the Indian Army and the Pakistani Army. Later, the shrine was rebuilt on the lines of central Asian architecture. Charar-e-sharief is one of the most sacred Muslim shrines and is popularly known as the Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Wali. This Muslim pilgrimage is dedicated to the memory of the Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani, who was the patron saint of the Muslims in Kashmir.

Srinagar - summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar is the summer capital of the Indian administered state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated in the Kashmir Valley and lies on the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus. The city is famous for its gardens, lakes and houseboats. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits. Srinagar has a long history, dating back at least to the 3rd century BC, and has been known by different names. The city was founded by the King Pravarasena II over 2,000 years ago, named it Parvasenpur. The city was then a part of the Maurya Empire, one of the largest empires of the Indian subcontinent. Ashoka introduced Buddhism to the Kashmir valley, and the adjoining regions around the city became a centre of Buddhism. In the 1st century, the region was under the control of Kushans and several rulers of this dynasty strengthened the Buddhist tradition.[citation needed] Vikramaditya (of Ujjain) and his successors probably ruled the regions just before the city fell to the control of the Huns in the 6th century, and Mihirkula was the most dreaded ruler of the city and the valley.

The city is located on both the sides of the Jhelum River which is called Vyath in Kashmir. The river passes through the city and meanders through the valley, moving onward and deepening in the dal Lake. The city is famous for its nine old bridges, connecting the two parts of the city. Srinagar has a humid subtropical climate, with a climate much cooler than what is found in much of the rest of India, due to its moderately high elevation and northerly position. The valley is surrounded by Himalayas on all sides. Winters are cool and temperature remains below freezing at night. Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in winters and the only road that connects Srinagar with the rest of India may get blocked a few days due to avalanche

Srinagar is one of several places that have been called the Venice of the East or the Kashmiri Venice. It is known for its lakes, which include Dal Lake -- noted for its houseboats -- and Nagin Lake. Srinagar has some Mughal gardens, forming a part of those laid by the Mughal emperors across the Indian subcontinent. Those of Srinagar and its close vicinity include Chashma Shahi (the royal fountains); Pari Mahal (the palace of the fairies); Nishat Bagh (the garden of spring); Shalimar Bagh; and the Naseem Bagh. The Tulip Gardens have been recently opened to public by Sonia Gandhi. The Sher Garhi Palace houses administrative buildings from the state government. Another palace of the Maharajas, the Gulab Bhavan, has now become the Lalit Grand Palace hotel.

So who was Baba Reshi? The name is a pseudonym of Baba Payam ud Din Reshi, a courtier of 15th century Kashmir King Zain-ul-Abidin. Also known as Baba Rishi or Babareshi; his “dargah” now is one of the major Sufi shrines of Kashmir. Baba Reshi is said to have been born in 1411 C.E. to a nobleman. As a young man, he himself joined the court of the prince of the region as a minister; and remained so until he decided to give up all his belongings in order to serve the common people. He lived and meditated at this location which now is the site of his tomb and shrine.

The dargah itself is located at quite a scenic location. It was built in 1480 and is located near Ramboh village in Baramulla District. Coming from Tangmarg, as you start climbing up the steep ascent towards Gulmarg; there is a road that bifurcates towards the shrine about 4 kilometers before Gulmarg. Driving through the lush and beautiful meadows, you would finally arrive at this beautiful dargah painted in white and green; built in Mughal and Persian style. Inside the shrine are some beautifully crafted wooden artworks reminiscent of the bygone era.

Surrounded by lush green lawns, this shrine attracts tons of visitors each year both for its religious and historic significance. We arrived here at about 3 PM and the entire place was filled with people. They were all locals and I guess I and my friends were the only non-Kashmiris there. The huge camera hanging around my neck immediately gave the impression of a tourist and people looked at us with curiosity; or maybe amusement. There is quite a big market around the shrine consisting of shops selling balloons and toys; and several small “dhabas” and tea stalls. For people wanting to stay overnight, there is also a small guest house here. Basic amenities like an ATM machine too is available.
It is a beautiful shrine built at a very scenic location and there is absolutely no doubt about it. More than the shrine however, it was the life of Baba Reshi that interested me more. It is said that one day, while he was still a minister of the court; Baba Reshi was going somewhere on his horse. On the way he noticed a group of ants working hard carrying tiny specks of grain in their mouths to their home. They were storing this food in preparation of the harsh winter ahead.

This sight had a huge impact on Baba Reshi, making him realize that such a small animal was working so hard preparing for the days ahead; whereas, he himself was least worried and was not making any preparations for what comes next after death. In this world he maybe a minister, an important person, but about the next world? What was his plan for the life there?

The Sufi
Moved by the sight of the ants and worried about his life after death, Baba Reshi gave up his post in the prince’s court and all his worldly belongings. He then came to Baba Shukruddin, seeking his guidance, and stayed with him for 2 years while training on essentials of a Sufi life. After 2 years, Baba Shukruddin sent him to Baba Zainuddin Rishi at Aishmuqam for further guidance; where Baba Reshi underwent a long and rigorous training of Sufi Path.

In his later years, as instructed by Baba Zainuddin, Baba Reshi moved to the small village of Ramboh.It is said that back then, this place was highly contaminated with evil creatures which Baba helped cleanse. He spent rest of his life here helping people and performing several miracles.One such story is that the dargah itself was earlier at a higher place and people found it difficult to climb up all the way. Baba Reshi then to make it easier for everyone moved his dargarh to its current location which was better accessible. No he did not move himself, but rather moved the entire piece of land that the dargah was built on.

Baba Reshi also famously built a daan, a fire place, here. Back in the day, people used to come from far to plaster this daan and offer sacrifices in order do have their wishes granted. The practice still gets followed. It is also believed that childless couples are blessed with one after praying here.

If you were coming from Gulmarg, then there is a direct 5 kilometers road that bring you to the shrine. If you were however coming from Srinagar, then you will have to first reach Tangmarg. After Tangmarg, as you start to get closer to Gulmarg, there is a small road that bifurcates to your right from where, the shrine is at a distance of about 4 kilometers.

There is no direct bus to Baba Reshi. You will have to look for either a private taxi or shared one. Shared cabs in the form of Tata Sumo run on the route in plenty and you will have no trouble finding one. If you were coming from Srinagar, then you can catch a bus until Tangmarg and then look for a Sumo cab from there.

So if you were planning to visit Gulmarg anytime soon, be sure to include a visit to the shrine of Baba Reshi in your itinerary.

Nasiruddin Mahmud Chirag-e-Delhi (or Chiragh-e-Delhi) was a prominent saint of the Chishti Order. He was a mureed (disciple) of the great saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and later his khalifa (successor). He was the last recognised khalifa of the Chishti Order from Delhi and was given the title, Roshan Chirag-e-Delhi, which in Urdu means Illuminated Lamp of Delhi.
In his lifetime Khwaja Nasiruddeen Chiragh witnessed the final ruin of the kingdom of Delhi and the fragmentation of the Chishtia silsila. Under his guidance, the sacred order managed to stay true to its principles of remaining above politics and the whims of kings, even though in his haste to combat the popularity of the silsila, the reigning sultan destroyed Delhi itself.
