All sorts of weird and wonderful vegetables and fish available in the markets.
Yun-de is lacquerware in Burmese and the art is called Pan yun. The lacquer is the sap tapped from the varnish tree or Thitsee that grows wild in the forests of Myanmar. It is straw-coloured but turns black on exposure to air. When brushed in or coated on, it forms a hard glossy smooth surface resistant to a degree effects of exposure to moisture or heat. Lacquer vessels, boxes and trays have a coiled or woven bamboostrip base often mixed with horsehair, and the thitsee may be mixed with ashes or sawdust to form a putty-like substance called thayo which can be sculpted. The object is coated layer upon layer with thitsee and thayo to make a smooth surface, polished and engraved with intricate designs, commonly using red, green and yellow colours on a red or black background. Shwezawa is a distinctive form in its use of gold leaf to fill in the designs on a black background.Palace scenes, scenes from the Jataka tales, and the signs of the Burmese Zodiac are popular designs and some vessels may be encrusted with glass mosaic or semi-precious stones in gold relief. The objects are all handmade and the designs and engraving done free-hand. It may take three to four months to finish a small vessel but perhaps over a year for a larger piece. The finished product is a result of teamwork and not crafted by a single person.

BURMESE LACQUERWARE (RARE WORKSHOP TOUR!!) | EP10
Hey Everyone! In this vlog, we will take you on a Burmese lacquerware workshop tour with a fourth generation store owner.
The name of the workshop that toured us was Mya Thaw Tar Lacquerware. I highly recommend checking them out. The exact map location is pinned inside the video.
Also, this tour was not purchased online nor was it organised in advance. There are no tourists here. Just Robyn and I :-)
If you ever travel to Myanmar, especially Bagan, you will notice quite a few lacquerware workshops on the side of the road. If you are in the market to buy some authentic lacquerware products, then this is the place to buy them!
After I filmed this video, the owner requested that I not release it. But after a side conversation, he agreed to allow this video to be released. Although it is a long 30 minute video, you will see exactly how much hard work goes into making these amazing products.
I hope you enjoy this video. Let me know if you managed to watch the entire 30 minutes :-)
Have an awesome day!
Filmed: 12th December 2018

Bagan Lacquerware step by step
Myanmar Lacquerware has a very unique style and a long tradition dating back to the 13th Century and existing mainly at Bagan in central Myanmar.
Bagan is the major center for the lacquerware industry where the handicraft is still practiced in the traditional manner. The government school of Lacquerware was founded in the 1920s.
Lacquer in Myanmar is called “Thitsi” meaning the sap of a Thitsi Tree (Melanhorrea Usitata), which is native to Southeast Asia. In China and Japan, the tree from which laquer is tapped is a different species “Rhus Vernicifera”. In Myanmar, the Thitsi tree grows wild in the Shan State and hilly regions. The resin of this tree has been extracted and used for coating and varnishing by Myanmar folks since the beginning.
Bamboo and wood are used asa frame or base in making laquerwork and are readily and cheaply available around the Bagan area. Depending on the process and material used in the manufacturing process the Lacquerware it can be listed as Plain Lacquerware, Incised Lacquerware, Gilt Lacquerware and Glass mosaic and gilt Lacquerware.
Lacquerware are decorated with Burmese floral designs depicting Buddha’s Life or are gilded in gold. Myanmar Lacquerware is widely used as kitchen ware, jewelry boxes souvenirs, home decorations and petitions.
