Bagh Bhairav Temple is holy to both Hindus and Buddhists. Bagh Bhairav Temple is dedicated to God Bhairav in the form of a tiger. This god is regarded as the guardian of Kirtipur and the locals call it Ajudeu, a grandfather god. This temple was constructed between 1099 and 1126 AD by Shiva Deva. The temple lies at the height of 1405 m from sea level, from where a beautiful view of Kathmandu valley can be seen.
The temple is rectangular and lies within the area of 1500 sqm. There is a Temple Torana to the left of the entrance with Vishnu riding Garuda. Bhairav in the middle of Ganesh and Kumar is below them. To the right of the Bagh Bhairava Mandir stands an interesting sculpture thought to be of Kirti mata, mother of Kirtipur, depicted on her back giving birth to a still unidentified creature. Other sculptures in the vicinity of the temple include the Ashta Matrikas (the eight mother deities) dating from the 3rd or 4th century and a rare iconic portrayal of Shiva from the 6th century. These survivals from the Licchavi period show the site to be among the oldest in the valley. The upper section of the temple is covered with swords and shields that belonged to the troop of Kirtipur, who were defeat by the army of King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Sacrifices are made here on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. The squat 16th century temple has wood-carvings and wall paintings, a rare combination in the Katmandu Valley. The paintings unfortunately are almost unrecognizable.
The temples were renovated in the years 1515 AD, 1803 AD, 1850 AD and 1961 A

Bagh Bhairav temple is one of the most popular temples dedicated to the god Bhairav in the form of a tiger.
This god is regarded as the guardian of Kirtipur and the locals call it Ajudeu, a grandfather god.
Bhairav, the most terrifying and awful form of Shiva, is the destroyer on one hand and the guardian on the other. ???? History of Bagh Bhairav
There was a very old settlement in days gone by . It was a village nestled in a plain land called Narago near a dense jungle . The people thereof lived on cultivating the land . So, they tamed the cattle , besides , they were very skilful in craft manship . They were very expert in constructing the buildings, making woodcarving and weaving cloths. The men worked in the field , the women wove cloths or did their housework in the field , the women wove cloths or did their housework and the boys and girls grazed the cattle in the jungle .
The place where the shepherds used to graze the cattle was a grassy ground. There was a small fountain , which poured out of a wooded hill called in those days padmakastha giri down to a little lower part of the ground and ran freshly forth down the field . The shepherds had free time while grazing the cattle in the jungle. Sometimes they played games , the other times they made toys out of clay , but more often they made different kinds of clay animals , because they were always with their tamed animals . so their brains were full of the images of those animals .
One day the shepherd boys went to graze their sheep in the grassy ground at the foot of the wooded hill, Padmakastha Giri . The boys got there and set their sheep free to eat the grasses and the leaves of the trees. They talked to one another as to what kind of thing they would like to make that day. After some time, they decided to make a tiger out from the clay . so they went to the side of the fountain moistened a heap of clay . When the clay became soft , they began to make an idol of a tiger . They tried and tried to give a new shape of tiger very skillfully with the mouth open. at last they made it as if a real tiger , but it was without a tongue in it .
Therefore, they went into the jungle to fetch a leaf to fit it in the mouth of the clay tiger as a tongue , and they had to search for it for a long time . at that time , they could not get suitable leaf to add as a tongue .
Just at the same time Lord Shiva , after a long time’s walking with his son Ganesh , arrived at that spot and rested there on a big stone . Ganesh did not stay there . He went into the jungle . At that time Lord Shiva wondered to see there the very beautiful clay – made tiger. There he saw some sheep being grazed a little further . he waited and waited for his son Ganesh to go away from there , but Ganesh did not come back there . by that time he was tired and hungry . Therefore he as summed the form of Bhairab and incorporated into the clay tiger and devoured all the sheep thereof.

Bag Bhairav temple( बाघ भैरव मन्दिर) , Kirtipur, Nepal
The story of the origin of the Bagh Bhairav, as believed by the people is inordinate and it goes accordingly: “The shepherds children were grazing their sheeps in the forest that lies on the northern slope of Kirtipur , as usual they used to be engaged in the play of moulding the clay in different forms. One day they made a tiger and in search of a leaf that resembles a tongue in shape, they headed inside the jungle. It so happened that Lord Shiva, after a long walk with his son Ganesh, stopped near the clay tiger. While Ganesh wandered off into the think forest, Shiva grew hungry and as time passed further he gave into the temptation. Through mystical powers he merged his soul and body into the clay tiger which then came to life and devoured the sheeps. Seeing splattered blood and scattered bones upon their return, the shepherds searched for clues. Close inspection of the tiger revealed blood inside its mouth. When the children asked the clay tiger if he had actually devoured all the sheeps, it opened its mouth wide. Angered by the loss of their sheeps, the tiger was never given a tongue. Hence, all images and statues of Bagh Bhairav are missing tongues. Legend has it that the form of deity still desires a tongue.”
