Victor Mayor progressively changes city
VICTOR - Mayor Scott Fitzgerald has made numerous changes since taking the handle bars from Don Thompson, who had been in charge for over 15 years. A new bike park, a reduction of 2 lanes on main street as well as the addition of reverse parking and a cycling lane, have all come about in his short term.
I asked the mayor, Would you consider yourself progressive?
Um... It depends on how you define that term progressive. I like to think outside the box, I'm a small business owner myself. So I like to do things not just the way things have always been done. So I guess in a lot of ways you could say I'm progressive, answered Victor Mayor Scott Fitzgerald.
I asked, You're not a suit and tie kind of guy are you?
Yeah... and it reflects this community. We're not a suit and tie community. I think a lot of politicians dress the politician role, instead of the role of their community, said Fitzgerald.
Some residents love the current progression of the city.
I think they're fantastic. I'm really excited about what he's done on main street to slow down traffic. He's created some safe bike lanes for bikers, which I appreciate it. And start making this place a little bit more walkable, said 2-year-resident Dahvi Wilson.
However, there are citizens who question Fitzgerald's decisions.
A lot of the reason we're getting these changes is because we have a new planning and zoning director. And the mayor and the new city council people are young and inexperienced. They're pretty much doing whatever the new zoning guy is doing. They've drank the Koolaid. As a result we've got a bunch of crazy stuff being thrown upon us that a good percentage of people are not in favor of, said business owner Mike Sheridan.
In November Fitzgerald will be challenged for his seat by Rodney Wright. If he wins, there's more changes to come, but if he loses he'll go down as a mayor who at least made changes in a very short time.
A Cyclocross racing event will take place October 17th and 18th at the new bike park on Elm street. To sing up or get more information visit this link: moosecross.com
