Dateline revisits 'Bagram's Creature Comforts', a documentary that SBS aired on 28/02/10. The 25,000 people at the military compound can shop, eat and be pampered and entertained in an improvised mall, just like at home. But while many troops appreciate the American oasis in the Afghan desert, the troops' new commander is reportedly unimpressed.

The Kabul we know from the news is a dusty, broken cityscape.
But just an hour's drive north, 20 000 US soldiers bask in the creature comforts of the Bagram Air Base. Gaudy signs offer Burger King, Harley Davidson and Karaoke, and you could easily forget you're in the middle of a war zone. For a lot of people, this is a slice of home, says Lieutenant Koczera, joining the long queue for Burger King. He's grateful for the opportunity to get a souvenir for his loved ones, free from the constant fear of fire: going off the base is not the time to really shop. But with more American troops on the way, space is getting tight. The commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, General McChrystal, has ordered the more indulgent services to close. Many of the 4,000 civilians from Russia, India, and Pakistan who work on the base face an uncertain future. They say if you are not Afghan, you are going to be closed, says one. McChrystal wants his soldiers focused on the main game now more than ever. And whilst the soldiers here admit that the shops are a bonus, they know theyre here to fight, not to shop.

Typical day for me at BAF. It's Christmas Eve, but we work every day. Eat, sleep, work, repeat. I ride my bike across the base each morning. I could catch a ride, but it's my way to stay fit and get some alone time. This place is crowded, so time alone is precious.
In addition to showing you a little of my typical day, I also answer some questions about the housing and gym facilities for contractors, talk a little about my work in the preventative maintenance department in LOGCAP, and explain a bit about the different nationalities working here. Videos From Deadly Attack On Bagram Airfield Contradict Official Narrative
documenting the 10-hour battle at Bagram Airfield 2019.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which killed two civilians of unidentified nationality and wounded 70 more.
US officials initially claimed the militants targeted an under-construction medical facility near Bagram Air Base, but various photos show significant damage to structures on the base as well, including damage to an aircraft terminal, which suggest the fighting and attack may not have been isolated to a single, off-base structure.
Additionally, in one of the witness videos, a man speaking English with an American or Canadian accent laughs at the official report that the attackers were merely targeting a Hospital. He also narrates how the battle has been ongoing for over nine hours as cyclic weapons discharges can be heard nearby.
Bagram District Gov. Qodusi claimed in an article that the facility was attacked by only six Taliban insurgents, which is odd, considering the 10-hour gun battle and airstrikes from both Apache attack helicopters and US fixed-wing fighter jets.

Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan Is Attacked by Car Bomb
At least 80 people were wounded and a woman was killed in a car bombing and subsequent attack by gunmen at the largest United States military base in Afghanistan.
KABUL, Afghanistan — Armed attackers on Wednesday set off a car bomb and penetrated Bagram Air Base, the largest United States military base in Afghanistan, killing at least one person and wounding at least 80, officials said.
The attack on the base — which President Trump had recently visited — came as peace talks resumed between American officials and Taliban representatives in Doha, Qatar’s capital.
A vehicle laden with explosives targeted the southern part of the base, the site of a medical facility that was under construction. Several attackers then entered the base, engaging in a firefight with Afghan and coalition forces. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack on the base, which is north of Kabul, the capital.
