MARRAKESH: EXPLORING BAHIA PALACE, magnificent FOUNTAINS and GARDENS (MOROCCO) ⛲
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the magnificent Bahia Palace which is a palace and a set of gardens located in Marrakesh, Morocco. It was built in the late 19th century, intended to be the greatest palace of its time. The name means brilliance. As in other buildings of the period in other countries, it was intended to capture the essence of the Islamic and Moroccan style. There is a 2-acre (8,000 m²) garden with rooms opening onto courtyards.
Morocco, a North African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, is distinguished by its Berber, Arabian and European cultural influences. Marrakesh’s medina, a mazelike medieval quarter, offers entertainment in its Djemaa el-Fna square and souks (marketplaces) selling ceramics, jewelry and metal lanterns. The capital Rabat’s Kasbah of the Udayas is a 12th-century royal fort overlooking the water.

Bahia Palace, Marrakech, Morocco
Bahia Palace. Marrakech. Morocco.
A palace for the harem, which once housed Bou Ahmed’s four wives and 24 concubines.
Looted after his death by his wives , only the ceilings doors fountains n mosaic wslls remain for us to appreciate.
La Bahia (The Beautiful) is a floor-to-ceiling extravagance of intricate marquetry and zouak (painted wood) ceilings, begun by Grand Vizier Si Moussa in the 1860s but embellished from 1894 to 1900 by slave-turned-vizier Abu ‘Bou’ Ahmed.
Le Petit Riad
Let your eyes adjust to the dim light in the main salon, where the palace’s intricate ornamentation comes into full view. Excepting the statement fireplace, the room is starkly devoid of furnishings, making the artisan work upon the ceilings and walls even more striking. Step through an arcade of exquisitely carved arches into the verdant courtyard (La Petite Cour).
La Grande Cour
The Grand Courtyard (La Grande Cour) is an immense expanse of Italian Carrara marble rimmed by a gallery trimmed in jaunty blue and yellow. While admiring the tranquil effect of all that marble majesty, remember this is where people waited in the sun for hours to beg for Bou Ahmed’s mercy. At the far end, backed by swaying palm trees, is the Room of Honour, featuring a spectacular cedar ceiling.
Le Grand Riad
Step through the doorway from the Grand Courtyard into the large courtyard of the Grand Riad, studded with fountains and lush foliage and sound-tracked by birdsong. This is the oldest part of the palace complex, completed in 1867. The salon open here may be small, but it's bedecked with painted-wood artistry and stained-glass detailing.
The Harem
If you’re going to envy a ceiling once in your life, it will be here. Running off the Grand Riad is the harem, which once housed Bou Ahmed’s four wives and 24 concubines. The quarters of his favourite of the harem, Lalla Zineb, are the most spectacular, with original woven-silk panels, intricate marquetry and zouak ceilings of dazzling and colourful patterns painted with rose bouquets. Crane your neck upwards to spot the different floral motifs.

El Bahia Palace, Marrakech, Morocco
Work on building El Bahia Palace started in 1880 for the great vizier Sidi Moussa. It was later used by sultans Moulay Hassan and Moulay Abd el-Aziz, though Sidi Moussa was the de facto minister of the kingdom.
It is likely that he had this 160-room palace built for one of his official concubines, El Bahia Palace meaning palace of the beautiful. There are many luxurious apartments and courtyards. The various interior gardens and courtyards are heavily decorated with stucco panels, tiled floors and zellij work decoration. El Bahia is a good example of the Eastern architecture of the 19th century.
It that took 15 years to complete and comes with 8 hectares of garden.
