Paracas National Reserve, Paracas, Pisco, Ica, Peru, South America
The Paracas National Reserve is located in Ica, Peru and consists of the Paracas Peninsula, coastal areas and tropical desert extending to the south slightly past Punta Caimán, a total of 335,000 ha (217,594 ha are marine waters and 117,406 are part of the mainland). It includes Bahía de la Independencia (Independence Bay) and miles of coastal waters. Its main purpose is to preserve the marine ecosystem and protect the historical cultural heritage related to ancient indigenous peoples, mostly of the Paracas culture. The reserve is home to many species of wildlife, particularly birds (see Paracas Birds, which are largely concentrated at the water's edge. Near the entrance inside the reserve is the Muséo Sitio de Julio C. Tello. Named for the archeologist who made major discoveries about the ancient Paracas culture, it features artifacts and interpretation, as well as information about the flora and fauna of this unique region. Established in 1975, it is the oldest marine reserve in Peru, and it incorporates a variety of marine habitats and tropical desert. In addition to the biological areas, the reserve protects prehistoric sites of the Paracas culture and other ancient civilizations. Near the museum is the Paracas Necropolis (100 BCE - CE 300), comprising the burial sites known as the Cabezas Largas and Cerro Colorado, where Julio C. Tello found many fine grave goods buried with mummified remains of the Paracas elite. Also in the reserve is Pampa de Santo Domingo, where archeologists have dated finds of human remains to 6500 BC. Found there was a decorated quena (flute), believed to be the first musical instrument of Peru. One of the main geomorphological attraction along the Paracas coast, La Catedral arch (the Cathedral) was destroyed during the 2007 earthquake. The Bahia Lagunillas is bordered with red sand beaches, product of the erosion of porphyry rocks that dominate some of the hills of the Paracas Peninsula. On the Paracas Peninsula is the mysterious geoglyph called the Paracas Candelabro, which is believed to date to the Paracas culture about 200 BCE.
Islas Ballestas, Paracas National Reserve, Paracas, Pisco Province, Ica Region, Peru, South America
The Ballestas Islands are a group of small islands near the town of Paracas located within the Paracas District of the Pisco Province in the Ica Region, on the south coast of Peru. Composed largely of rock formations and covering an estimated area of 0.12 km², these islands are an important sanctuary for marine fauna like the guanay guano bird, the blue-footed booby and the tendril. Other notable species include Humboldt Penguins and two varieties of seals (fur seals and sea lions), amongst other mammals. These islands are accessible from the resort town of Paracas (near Pisco) by tour boat which typically lasts 2 hours. During the visits it is not uncommon for the sea lions to approach the tourist boats and make spectacles for the visiting tourists. The sea lions are also responsible for a unique audio spectacle with their wolf-pack cries that echoes around the Ballestas and creates an effect of a 360 degree surrounding choir. On the way to the islands, on the Paracas Peninsula, visitors will notice El Candelabro, a large-scale Geoglyph that may have served as a beacon to mariners. The mystery as to the origins of this particular Geoglyph is ongoing with much speculation. The visit to the Ballestas Islands is, from an ecotourism point of view, probably the best known along the Peruvian coast. The district of Paracas (Quechua: paraq) is the largest district of the province of Pisco in the Peruvian region of Ica. The Capital is Además. It was home to the pre-Columbian Paracas culture.
The Paracas Peninsula, south of the Paracas Bay and the Islas Ballestas form the Paracas National Reserve, which was established on 25 September 1975 and has a total area of 335,000 hectares. The reserve is intended to protect the rich occurrence of mane seals, blue footed boobies, pelicans, Humboldt penguins and other marine mammals and seabirds. Famous landmark was until August 2007 the rock formation of the Cathedral of Paracas, which was destroyed during the 2007 earthquake in Peru.
On the peninsula there is a large petroglyph, the Candelabro de Paracas, which resembles the Nazca Lines, but is considerably younger. He probably served seafarers as a navigation landmark.
Legend has it that freedom hero General José de San Martín landed on the coast of Paracas on 8 September 1820 as part of his expedition. Tired of the long journey, he fell asleep on the beach. When he woke, he was blinded by the beauty of passing flamingos. Its spread wings in the setting sun were for San Martín the inspiration for the first red and white Peruvian flag, which is also a model of today's national flag.
We went on to a boat trip, have seen awesome kitesurfers and thousands of native animals. We ate perfect seafood, enjoyed the sun and went swimming in one of the greatest lagoon pools I have ever seen. The red beach, fossils and nature were intense. While doing a bike tour we enjoyed everything around us, the desert, the birds, mammals and of cause the ocean with its big waves. On our boat trip we enjoyed the pure calm of the ocean as well as the penguins and the Candelabro. Seeing the kitersurfers kitersurfig was intense!
