The Fishermen of the Sea of Cortez
The Fishermen of the Sea Of Cortez.
Casey and I lived and camped on the Sea of Cortez at Bahia Kino for about three months with our outrigger canoe, Wilber, a James Wharram Designs, Tahiti Wayfarer 21. I was offered an opportunity to go along for a days work with these local lads doing it hard and scraping a living from what has been described as the earth's aquarium.
Each trip they raise, empty and re-bait a couple of hundred traps for what I believe are Conch Sea Snails. The traps are dropped in about eighty feet of water and each one is hauled up hand over fist, and let me tell you, it is seriously tough work!
The Pangas, the boats they use, are relatively flat bottomed to allow them to be pulled up onto the beaches...meaning there is no keel, stringers or other directional aides on the bottom of the hulls and when they gave me a turn at the tiller I could not for the life of me get the damn thing to track over the floats...I overshot every one. So I didn't last long doing that job!
The boys let me have a go at hauling in the traps and I was knackered after only half a dozen, technique and conditioning were absolutely key...and I had neither. So I didn't last long doing that job either!
They told me the fishery was slowly disappearing because the big boys come through and clean sweep the bottom with nets and leave nothing behind but throw back, which is normally dead by the time the process is done. The large scale ops were being done with impunity and no regard for law nor moral compass and basically strip wherever they go.
When I asked them how they felt about it, they just shrugged, smiled and got on with it. Now that could have been because my inability to speak Mexican was only eclipsed by their ability to not speak English. We got by with minimal words, lots of sign language and plenty of laughter...at me or with me, not really sure but we all seemed to have a good time!
Bahia Kino is a small out of the way coastal township about one hundred kilometers to the west of Hermosillo which is due south of Nogales, on the Mexican/Arizona border. We ended up here because of a burnt out front wheel bearing on our adventure van got us stranded in Hermosillo for a few days and caused a serendipitous meeting of some wonderful people who encouraged us to divert our plans and visit this small classic Mexican coastal village.
Because of a mechanical failure, a stranding in what we were told was a most dangerous city, and getting to know some local people, we ended up living through a fantastic life experience and saw an aspect of Mexico that very few people ever get to witness.
We were truly fortunate and humbled by the strangers we now call friends.
