Aswali dam near Bordi
Aswali dam is among many other attractions in Bordi. It is a picnic spot near Bordi in Palghar dist. The Dam is accessible to public, which is a nice picnic spot to spend a day with family and friends. Across the other end a good 30 min walk over the mountains leads to the Bahrot caves, where you can get the ariel views of the reservoir. A good time to visit this place would be June – October. The place offers a very distinct view of the mountains and reservoir. The Dam is accessible to public, which is a nice picnic spot to spend a day with family and friends.

A group of freelance scientists discovered rock shelter painting sites in Tapti valley deep inside the Satpura ranges in Gawilgarh hills on Maharashtra (MS) -Madhya Pradesh (MP) border & only 60 Km. from Amravati city in Vidarbha. There has not been any known previous record of such cave paintings at the said region except a few near Pachmarhi (MP). The team of scientists led by Dr. Vijay Ingole from Amravati comprising Mr. Padmakar Lad, Mr. Shirishkumar Patil, Dr. Manohar Khode, Mr. Dnyaneswar Damahe and Mr. Pradeep Hirurkar has been in search of such caves in the above location in Satpura range for the last 10 years. Their efforts were eventually rewarded during the last week of January 2007 when they discovered the first rock shelter with ancient paintings. Later within the next 6 months more than 100 cave shelters and 30 of such rock shelter painting sites dating from upper Paleolithic ( 15000 BC) period to Prehistoric ( 2000 to 4000 BC) period have been discovered and recorded. It is evident from the diversity, quality of paintings, pictographs and having early human settlement for such a long duration one would not have any doubt that the above site will be a world heritage in the near future. Now the site is under Archeological Survey of India (ASI) since 2012.

Maharashtra – Where basalt rocks have turned into heritage!
Maharashtra is the home to over 70% of India’s rock-cave art. From pre-Buddhist caves to the heritage structures built by British, Maharashtra had several rulers and dynasties who have written the history. Most of the caves were Buddhists vipassana meditation centres about 2500 years ago. Several districts of Maharashtra have caves from Elephanta, Kanheri, Mahakali, Bahrot near Mumbai; Karla, Bhaje, Bedse, Lenyadri, Pataleshwar near Pune; Ajanta, Ellora & Pitalkhora, near Aurangabad; Kharosa, near Latur; and Pandavleni near Nashik. All caves are rock-cut and made with little more than hammer and chisel. There were several temples which were rock-cut or constructed with basalt rocks. The Kailasantha temple at Ellora caves is the largest single monolithic rock excavation in the world.
Later Maharashtra witnessed rock-cut forts which were used by the rulers to control several parts of Maharashtra. The forts like Daulatabad (formerly Devgiri) have served as capital of Maharashtra during the Mughal empire which was taken over form the Yadava Dynasty. Shivaji Bhonsle, the founder of Maratha empire further built forts like Sindhudurg and Pratapgad whereas Raigad was his capital. He captured several forts and had a control of over 360 forts. All forts were primarily rock-cut barring Shaniwarwada which was primarily made from wood. Shaniwarwada in Pune, was originally the capital of the Peshwa rulers.
The British East India Company defeated Peshwa empire in the 18th century which brought the Victorian and gothic architecture to Maharashtra. The British built the Gateway of India constructed with basalt stones in Mumbai to welcome their monarch. The Heritage building of Chhatrpati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (Victoria Terminus) was designed by the British architect and is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The rich history and heritage of Maharashtra must be experienced through the rock-cut caves and monuments to know how incredible India is!
