Underwater archeology Park the Romans Atlantis Baia Naples
Baia (the ancient Baiae) is a hamlet of Bacoli, a commune of the metropolitan city of Naples and part of the Phlegrean Fields.
Its gulf, enclosed by the south-facing Lanterna (on which the Aragonese castle is located) and the Epitaffio tip to the north, is nothing but an ancient volcanic crater, dating back to about 8,400 years ago, and only half preserved, being Its east coast sunk or completely eroded by the sea.
Campanian center is home to the largest plant in the region for molluscs purification, Bay's reputation is tied mainly to the presence of archaeological remains of remarkable historical and artistic value.
According to legend, his name comes from Bajos, the daze of Ulysses, who was buried here [1]. In Roman times, as evidenced by the rich villas, it was a place of rest and holiday attended by Roman patricians. The resort was famous for its hot thermal waters, sought after for luxury and for the treatment of diseases
ROMAN RUINS DIVING IN NAPLES ITALY | Campi Flegrei Diving at The Sunken City of Baia
The most unique scuba diving in Italy that you can do is probably the Roman Ruins diving in the Bay of Naples. Here, you can do the Phlegrean Fields - Campi Flegrei Diving to see the underwater Baia Archeological Park.
The Sunken City of Baia is a submerged archaeological park that once used to be a prominent resort city during Roman times. Throughout the centuries, as the nearby Monte Nuovo (new mountain) rose up, a natural phenomenon occurred that caused the ancient Roman ruins to slowly submerge under shallow waters of the Bay of Naples.
The highlight of this archeological dive is the villa of Emperor Claudius. It was once adorned with mosaic floors, marble statues, and a grand spa complex. A lot of these remnants were preserved under no more than a layer of sand.
The excellent dive center that we used was the Centro Sub Campi Flegrei (the Phlegraean Fields' Diving Center), located in Pozzuoli, Italy.
You can reach Pozzuoli with the regional train from the Stazione di Montesanto in Central Napoli. The journey takes around 40 minutes along the scenic view of the Bay of Naples.

It's a forgotten world, hidden under a thin layer of sand just a few meters below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea. From 100BC to 500AD, Baiaie was a resort town where wealthy Romans would go to get away from the heat.

Diving closeby an ancient Roman Tower in Baia, Naples, Italy #2 - Raffaele Pilla
SCUBA Diving The Sunken Ancient Roman City Of Baiae, the Underwater Pompeii
We were in Naples to See Pompeii and Herculaneum and I’d heard about the sunken city of Baiae which is nearby. It’s been turned into an underwater archeological site. And they are still finding new artifacts. In fact, the last floor mosaic in my video isn’t even shown in any of the websites or brochures that I’ve seen. Many mosaic and marble floors are still intact. And when a diver shows up, the guide sweeps away the rocks covering the floor. They say that keeping them covered helps protect them. Anyway, it was the hedonistic, playground, like the Las Vegas for the Romans with hot springs, bathhouses, super villas and all the things the rich Romans wanted to enjoy in their free time. Evidently, they had quite a good time here. Emperors and the super rich lived here and had a wonderful time. It wasn’t destroyed like Pompeii, but was rather destroyed because it sunk beneath the sea as the land subsided. It’s still sinking and rising as the volcanic areas around it ebb and flow. It’s amazing that it could sink so much and yet have so much preserved. It was a really Interesting Dive.

Submerged remains of Emperor Claudius' nymphaeum (as found on display in the Phlegraean Fields' Archaeological Museum in the Aragonese Castle in Baia). The underwater environment takes us back into the past allowing us to view the reconstruction of the marble staues, the main street Herclanea and the surrounding thermal bath complex. Following restoration works, the dive site has been open since January 2010.
