Lake Baikal Photography Tour Winter | Photo Tours in Russia
A Lake Baikal Photography tour will provide bragging rights for any Self-respecting Photographer. With its enchanted ice caves, dazzling winter sun and dramatic landscapes, winter is without a doubt the most spectacular time to photograph frozen Lake Baikal.
Want to discover Lake Baikal on your very own photography tour:
This Lake Baikal Photography Tour will grant intrepid photographers the honour of focusing their lenses on some of Siberia’s most famously beautiful frozen landscapes. Summer sees the bulk of tourist activity in the area, but it’s in winter that the most devoted photographers make the pilgrimage, hoping to capture once-in-a-lifetime images of the natural world at its most powerful and surreal.
TRIP HIGHLIGHTS:
Climb to the top of Khoboy Cape for a breathtaking panoramic view showing the true scale of Siberia’s “inland sea”. The cape contains a labyrinth of grottoes where sunlight dances off ceilings jagged with icy stalactites
Khorin-Igri Bay: an ideal spot to photograph the natural phenomenon of frozen bubbles under Lake Baikal, rising to the surface in perfect discs suspended in the clear, dark water
Budun Cape is a rugged natural monument surrounded by shard-like ice mounds. An unreal sight with a huge variety of shapes, lines and geometry allowing for some creative perspectives
In the bay of Zuun-Khagun, the ice is often so transparent that the bottom of Lake Baikal is clearly seen. This is one of the best places to capture one of the most iconic images of Baikal – the inky black lake surface split with vein-like cracks in the ice that can stretch for dozens of kilometres
Uzury is a tiny village of about 10 people in eastern Olkhon. Close to Uzury are numerous ice grottoes and natural ice hummocks – giant blocks formed by the movement of ice floes that shimmer like precious stones on the surface of the lake.
Under deep freeze conditions, Lake Baikal is an astonishing sight, with its transparent layer of ice blanketing staggeringly clear water plunging over 1000 metres into the abyss. Exploring the lake’s numerous islands will reveal hidden grottoes and frozen caves where intricate ice formations make for otherworldly photo subjects.
The main subject of this 8 day Baikal tour will be the breathtaking beautiful Olkhon Island, the largest of Lake Baikal’s 27 islands. Olkhon is divided into three distinct climatic zones – steppe, forest and desert. Dotted all around Olkhon are strikingly photogenic landscapes and natural monuments, made all the more spectacular in winter by the presence of glittering ice caves and bizarre, beautiful ice hummocks – huge shards of ice that form out of cracks in the surface of the lake and shimmer with a transparent, turquoise hue.
This dedicated photographer’s safari caters for camera buffs of all skill levels, with an expert photographer on hand to give you advice on shooting techniques. Amateur photographers will enjoy workshops on mastering equipment, building the right composition and using filters. Seasoned photographers will learn more about shooting panoramas, focus stacking and night photography. Travelling with a professional team including a guide, translator and drivers, you’ll visit the most visually breathtaking destinations in the region on this Lake Baikal photo tour. You won’t go home without a gallery’s worth of stunning pictures, guaranteed!

Magical Winter on Lake Baikal - March 2018
Lake Baikal is one of the most attractive natural wonders in Russia. It is especially beautiful in winter. Where else can you see a huge lake not covered with snow? When you step on the ice you feel like you are in outer space, there is a meter of thick clear ice and a kilometre deep of the purest water under your feet.
Photographers adore Lake Baikal, it has so much to offer. The turquoise coloured crystal clear ice is a sight to behold. There are also the Olhon rocks and a great number of ice grottoes and caves on the way.
Why March? March is the best time to visit Baikal. The ice is frozen and thick. It can bear the weight of vehicles. The ice is transparent and clear and it keeps that way until the end of March. In the beginning of April it begins to brighten up and loses its clearance, becoming matte. In May, it starts the ice starts to thaw.

БАЙКАЛ, остров ОЛЬХОН / Baikal, Olkhon Island

CLIMATE EXPLORERS Realschule Traunreut in China/Mongolia/Russia (slideshow)
Chinese and German students (15 years) travel together from Bejing to Irkutsk with the Transsiberian Railway. After an apprenticeship at Rosenberger Asia Pacific in Bejing they use their time on rails for a climate academy.
Students from the Middleschool Nr. 1 in Zhangjiakou and students from Realschule Traunreut in Bavaria are focused on their own future. Dealing with China, Mongolia and Russia for professional reasons has become reality long time ago in Europe and Asia. The international labour market therefore delivers great job opportunities for the young skilled generation.
But the growing industry in Asia also lets increase the pollution of fresh water. Together with friends from the partner school Lyzeum No. 3 in Irkutsk the Climate Explorers started to study the options to protect drinking water.
The students asked passengers from all over the world on the train for their habits regarding their consumption of water. A complete wagon was used for an exhibition to display the statistics. Also several workshops about water protection were held in the train compartments during the 3 day trip to Lake Baikal in Siberia.
The Lake Baikal is the biggest drinking water resource in the world. On the other hand in the neighbour country China the groundwater is heavily polluted.
The Limnological Institut Irkutsk helped to answer the students question: Can the unequal distribution of clean drinking water cause political conflicts?
The Climate Explorers have been told by Kai Strittmatter (German Newspaper - Sueddeutsche Zeitung) and by the scientist Lev Yampolsky (East Tennessee State University) that there is a chance for an act of war in the future.
Germany is very interested in avoiding any conflicts between Russia and China. In especially because Europe would need to deal with the consequences of receiving refugees.
But German technology could help China to keep the environment as clean as possible. That means that there is a need for Research and Development in water protection technologies. It also brings work for the qualified next generation.
After the studies at Lake Baikal the Chinese Students were visiting the Realschule Traunreut in Upper Bavaria. They had a big surprising present for the Germans:
As an act of humanity the Chinese students donated money to the mayor of Passau. The Bavarian town Passau was the major victim of the flood catastrophe in 2013. Environment protection is the challenge for all the nations worldwide. Because pollution has no frontiers!
