After crazy and sometimes dangerous Baikal adventures Aapo and Vera relaxed and tried to get better on a local dacha (=russian summer cottage).

Explore the Wilderness of Lake Baikal | Lake Baikal, south of the Lake and Irkutsk | Travel Vlog
#russia #vlog #transsiberian
We had such an amazing time in this part of the world. The people were inviting and the landscapes jaw dropping. This was the stop on the Trans Siberian that we were excited about the most, it's where we would do something not many others have done, and in the depths of winter (it was still warm for the locals). We were here early December so the lake was still not frozen, but was showing signs of the harsh winter to come.
We hired a guide from Baikal Vision, to take us out to Olkhon Island, to see Lake Baikal. It was such an awesome tour with our guide Andre (I hope that's right). He was so passionate about this area and everything it stood for. We would definitely recommend the 2 night tour out to Olkhon Island.
We also did the day tour south of Lake Baikal, to see the thermal springs and volcanoes. It was nice to see this beautiful landscape.
The last day we spent exploring Irkutsk, this is a cosy town, with the river from Lake Baikal flowing through it. Lots of delicious restaurants and pretty streets.
Could not recommend checking out this part of the world more. It was something special!!!
Follow along as we travel through Russian. Subscribe please if you're enjoying.

Lake Baikal Photography Tour Winter | Photo Tours in Russia
A Lake Baikal Photography tour will provide bragging rights for any Self-respecting Photographer. With its enchanted ice caves, dazzling winter sun and dramatic landscapes, winter is without a doubt the most spectacular time to photograph frozen Lake Baikal.
Want to discover Lake Baikal on your very own photography tour:
This Lake Baikal Photography Tour will grant intrepid photographers the honour of focusing their lenses on some of Siberia’s most famously beautiful frozen landscapes. Summer sees the bulk of tourist activity in the area, but it’s in winter that the most devoted photographers make the pilgrimage, hoping to capture once-in-a-lifetime images of the natural world at its most powerful and surreal.
TRIP HIGHLIGHTS:
Climb to the top of Khoboy Cape for a breathtaking panoramic view showing the true scale of Siberia’s “inland sea”. The cape contains a labyrinth of grottoes where sunlight dances off ceilings jagged with icy stalactites
Khorin-Igri Bay: an ideal spot to photograph the natural phenomenon of frozen bubbles under Lake Baikal, rising to the surface in perfect discs suspended in the clear, dark water
Budun Cape is a rugged natural monument surrounded by shard-like ice mounds. An unreal sight with a huge variety of shapes, lines and geometry allowing for some creative perspectives
In the bay of Zuun-Khagun, the ice is often so transparent that the bottom of Lake Baikal is clearly seen. This is one of the best places to capture one of the most iconic images of Baikal – the inky black lake surface split with vein-like cracks in the ice that can stretch for dozens of kilometres
Uzury is a tiny village of about 10 people in eastern Olkhon. Close to Uzury are numerous ice grottoes and natural ice hummocks – giant blocks formed by the movement of ice floes that shimmer like precious stones on the surface of the lake.
Under deep freeze conditions, Lake Baikal is an astonishing sight, with its transparent layer of ice blanketing staggeringly clear water plunging over 1000 metres into the abyss. Exploring the lake’s numerous islands will reveal hidden grottoes and frozen caves where intricate ice formations make for otherworldly photo subjects.
The main subject of this 8 day Baikal tour will be the breathtaking beautiful Olkhon Island, the largest of Lake Baikal’s 27 islands. Olkhon is divided into three distinct climatic zones – steppe, forest and desert. Dotted all around Olkhon are strikingly photogenic landscapes and natural monuments, made all the more spectacular in winter by the presence of glittering ice caves and bizarre, beautiful ice hummocks – huge shards of ice that form out of cracks in the surface of the lake and shimmer with a transparent, turquoise hue.
This dedicated photographer’s safari caters for camera buffs of all skill levels, with an expert photographer on hand to give you advice on shooting techniques. Amateur photographers will enjoy workshops on mastering equipment, building the right composition and using filters. Seasoned photographers will learn more about shooting panoramas, focus stacking and night photography. Travelling with a professional team including a guide, translator and drivers, you’ll visit the most visually breathtaking destinations in the region on this Lake Baikal photo tour. You won’t go home without a gallery’s worth of stunning pictures, guaranteed!

The Trans-Siberian Railway:
The Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR, Russian: Транссиби́рская магистра́ль, tr. Transsibirskaya Magistral; IPA: is a network of railways connecting Moscow with the Russian Far East. With a length of 9,289 kilometres (5,772 miles), it is the longest railway line in the world. There are connecting branch lines into Mongolia, China and North Korea. It has connected Moscow with Vladivostok since 1916, and is still being expanded.
It was built between 1891 and 1916 under the supervision of Russian government ministers personally appointed by Tsar Alexander III and his son, the Tsarevich Nicholas (later Tsar Nicholas II). Even before it had been completed, it attracted travellers who wrote of their adventures.
The Trans-Siberian line remains the most important transport link within Russia; around 30% of Russian exports travel on the line. While it attracts many foreign tourists, it gets most of its use from domestic passengers.
Today the Trans-Siberian Railway carries about 200,000 containers per year to Europe. Russian Railways intends to at least double the volume of container traffic on the Trans-Siberian and is developing a fleet of specialised cars and increasing terminal capacity at the ports by a factor of 3 to 4. By 2010, the volume of traffic between Russia and China could reach 60 million tons (54 million tonnes), most of which will go by the Trans-Siberian.
With perfect coordination of the participating countries' railway authorities, a trainload of containers can be taken from Beijing to Hamburg, via the Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Siberian lines in as little as 15 days, but typical cargo transit times are usually significantly longer and typical cargo transit time from Japan to major destinations in European Russia was reported as around 25 days.
According to a 2009 report, the best travel times for cargo block trains from Russia's Pacific ports to the western border (of Russia, or perhaps of Belarus) were around 12 days, with trains making around 900 km (559 mi) per day, at a maximum operating speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). However, in early 2009, Russian Railways announced an ambitious Trans-Siberian in Seven Days programme; according to this plan, $11 billion will be invested over the next five years to make it possible for goods traffic to cover the same 9,000 km (5,592 mi) distance in just seven days. The plan will involve increasing the cargo trains' speed to 90 km/h (56 mph) in 2010–12, and, at least on some sections, to 100 km/h (62 mph) by 2015. At these speeds, goods trains will be able to cover 1,500 km (932 mi) per day.
Baikal Blues. Is Russia's greatest national treasure under threat?
Find out more about lake Baikal James Brown returns to Russia’s Lake Baikal, the world’s oldest and deepest lake, 7 years after his last visit to investigate reports that the region’s ecology had changed for the worse. The lake, known for the clarity of its freshwater, is home to hundreds of unique species of plants and animals. The beauty and rich biodiversity attracts many visitors. While tourism brings in much needed cash, it also has a flip side; tourists bring pollution, plastics and other waste. Local biologists have been monitoring the lake for 70 years and they’re increasingly concerned.
James joins a team of researchers to take water and sediment samples to see just how worrying the situation is. Visual examination reveals that a certain type of algae, usually found in swamps, has been spreading along the coast line signifying growing levels of pollution. Along with some worrying signs, there are a few hopeful ones too, like certain endemic animal populations starting to recover.
James visits Olkhon, an island popular with tourists, to see how ecologists and volunteers are fighting back against the pollution that visitors leave behind. From recycling to educating tourists and raising awareness of environmental issues, they’ve come up with effective strategies to preserve Baikal’s unique beauty and water quality. If they’re going to succeed though, they need everyone who visits or lives by this natural wonder to play their part.
