Aboriginal Scarred Tree - Bark Canoe (Bairnsdale, Victoria, Australia)
Aboriginal Scarred Tree - Bark Canoe (Howitt Park, Bairnsdale, Victoria, Australia)
Indigenous Australians (Aboriginals) make scarred trees for creating canoes & shelters and are scattered across all regions of Australia in many different forms making them some of the most common and easiest to find archaeological sites in Australia.
Deep cuts were made in the tree with the use of various tools generally stone to remove an area of bark with parallel sides and slightly pointed or rounded ends leaving a scar in the tree.
The most common types of trees used were native Australian Eucalyptus trees such as the Box or Red Gum.
Scarred trees dating much older than 200 years can still be found around Australia.

Summer in Australia
Awoke to heavy smoke from the Bushfires with the smell of smoke heavy in the air.
Yesterday we received the following message on our phone: Dangerous fire conditions in East Gippsland. Know what to do if in danger. Major roads may close. Avoid travel into bushland. Go to
I think we will be ok ????Seriously I don't think we are in danger. A wildlife carer just outside Bairnsdale (50 mins away) has had to relocate their rescue joeys etc to safety as fire is close to their property.
and then:
FB post from yesterday:
Just terrible. 54 minutes from us. I just hope Susie comes through. The back story is that Susie transferred her rescue centre to Waterholes earlier this year as she was in despair with the situation on Raymond Island. I honestly don't know how she keeps going. She is beleaguered on all sides and now nature too is against her.????
No update as yet from Susie.
High temperatures expected today and Monday.
There is also a colony of Flying Foxes in Bairnsdale (a lot perished last year in the 44degC heat) which are being monitored by local caring people. Hopefully they manage to set up sprinklers to try and keep the Flying Foxes cooler. The local Council are doing their best to chop down the trees where the Flying Foxes roost; thankfully local protests have stopped this for now.
At the moment I doubt anyone is thinking Australia is 'The Lucky Country'
Bairnsdale Christmas Parade 2010 (Part 1 of 2)
Bairnsdale, Victoria. Australia - 2010 Christmas Street Parade, 27th of November, 2010.
Presented by the Bairnsdale Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
The parade has grown in significance over the past three years and this year it will be bigger and better than ever.
Starting at 11am, the parade will leave the Bairnsdale Primary School grounds at McCulloch Street and travel up Main Street before turning at Wood Street and heading back to Bairnsdale Primary School on the other side of the street.
BCCI Christmas Parade coordinator Sally Robbins said at least 50 floats would take part in the parade, which included the Bairnsdale Band and Sale Pipe Band.
There will be a variety of different floats this year; there will be a good variety of things, so we hope to have lots of colour and noise and all that sort of jazz, Sally said.
Underdog will play in the gardens before and after the parade.
Children will find delight in Santa's arrival, and can have their photograph taken with the jolly man in 'Santa's House' after the parade.
The parade will go on rain, hail or shine and features a Roulette flyover.
Santa's House will open until 2.30pm after the parade.
Santa will return on Friday, December 10, from 10am until 1pm and 2.30pm until 4pm after recovering from the parade.
The house will be open at the same times on Saturday, December 11, and Monday, December 13 to 18. He will be back on Monday, December 22 and Tuesday, December 23.
Santa's House will be located in the Main Street gardens from 10.30am until 1pm on Christmas Eve before preparing for his ensuing delivery round. Bairnsdale Lioness Club has this year agreed to provide Santa's Elves.
Ms Robbins said several schools had painted Christmas boards that will be hung in the Main Street, taking this year's total to eight boards.
We just want to see everyone there and see the community get behind us.
Ms Robbins and her committee reminded anyone in the parade to be at Bairnsdale Primary School to register their float by 10am.
Voters are reminded that the Bairnsdale Primary School polling booth has moved to the St Mary's Parish Centre.
We want to make it the best Christmas Street parade in Gippsland!
