Hello, fellow travel fanatics! This week we will show you a bit of the beautiful city of Lisbon, Portugal.
Before we go on any travel adventure, we always view a couple of YouTube videos about our destination. ‘Walking around’ videos are arguably our favorite type of travel videos, that’s why we wanted you share one of Lisbon with you today.
In a bitesize chunk of three minutes, you can get a glimpse of the old town of Lisbon, the districts Bairro Alto and Alfama.
Bairro Alto and Alfama are two district full of authenticity and when you get a chance, you should definitely go check it out!

Barrio Alto is a wonderful district with multiple personalities making it worthy of several visits: during the day it is a local working-class place with inexpensive small restaurants, and many fine shops ranging from funky to elegant; but late at night it becomes the entertainment center of Lisbon, pulsating with nightclubs and bars. It is easy to reach on the hillside overlooking downtown Lisbon.

Bairro Alto, the nightlife hub of Lisbon is filled with sounds of Fado to Principe Real
Going up the typical straight and narrow streets of Bairro Alto, through alleys and the historical neighbourhoods, one can find several souvenirs shops, typical restaurants, bars, cafes, bakeries and famous fado houses, all the way up to Principe Real.
Bairro Alto and Chiado are two closely related districts of Lisbon, with one being fashionable and stylish by day while the other is trendy and cool by night.
Bairro Alto is not much to see by day but as the sun sets, the numerous small bars open and the partying continues late into the night. This guide will provide an overview of the two districts and detail their best sights and attractions.
Bairro Alto is the nightlife hub of Lisbon with countless small bars, trend intimate venues and restaurants where the haunting sounds of Fado can be heard waft out. During the weekends the revellers spill onto the streets and there is carnival atmosphere along the narrow cobbled streets, filled with people enjoying the night. Nights in Bairro Alto do not discriminate with everyone having a fun time and there is always a happy mix of foreigners, locals, gay, straight, young and old.

Lisbon Walking Tour - Travel Guide Bairro Alto, Cristo Rei, Santa Justa
Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel-colored buildings, Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.

LISBON: Chiado & Bairro Alto districts (3/5) Portugal
CHIADO is a traditional shopping area that mixes old and modern commercial establishments, mostly located at the Rua do Carmo and Rua Garrett. The Chiado is also an important cultural area, with several museums and theatres. Chiado is the name of a square and its surrounding area in Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal). The Chiado is located between the neighbourhoods of Bairro Alto and Baixa Pombalina.
In 1988, the Chiado area was severely affected by a fire, when 18 buildings were partially or totally destroyed. Thanks to a renovation project that lasted more than 10 years, the affected area has now virtually recovered.
The Santa Justa Lift (Portugese: Elevador de Santa Justa) is an elevator, or lift, in Lisbon and connects the higher Largo do Carmo with the lower streets of the Baixa.
The Convento da Ordem do Carmo (English: Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) is a former-Roman Catholic convent. The medieval convent was ruined during the sequence of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and the destroyed Gothic Church of Igreja do Carmo on the southern facade of the convent is the main trace of the great earthquake still visible in the old city. The Carmo Convent and its Church were built between 1389 and 1423. It is located in the Chiado neighbourhood, on a hill overlooking the Rossio square and facing the Lisbon Castle hill. It is located in front of a quiet square Largo do Carmo, very close to the Santa Justa Lift. Nowadays the ruined Carmo Church is used as an archaeological museum (Museu Arqueológico do Carmo).

BAIRRO ALTO (literally: Upper District) is a central district of the city of Lisbon, Portugal. Unlike many of the civil parishes of Lisbon, this region can be commonly explained as a loose association of neighbourhoods, with no formal local political authority but social and historical significance to the urban community of Lisbon.
In the last decades of the 20th century, there was a significant socio-cultural dynamic in the area, as a great part of the nightlife became dependent on the restaurants and bars of the quarter. Lisbon's city council made extensive remodelling and repairs to the district, resulting in the opening of new restaurants, clubs and trendy shops. While cars were restricted in the district (except for residents and emergency vehicles), many young people began to live in the Bairro; it is generally a youth-oriented heart of the sub-culture and nightlife of Lisbon.
The Bairro Alto district is generally delimited in the south by the Calçada do Combro and Rua do Loreto, west by Rua de O Século, north by Rua D. Pedro V and east by Rua da Misericórdia and Rua São Pedro de Alcântara. It is, topographically, a plateau with medium elevation of 76 metres (249 ft) terminating in the north, with accentuated slope towards the south.
The Glória Funicular (Portuguese: Ascensor da Glória) is a funicular railway line in the parish of Santo António (Lisbon), operated by Carris. It connects the Bairro Alto district with the Pombaline downtown (at the Restauradores Square. The tram system is situated along an axis that slopes 17.7%, that extends from the Avenida da Liberdade to the Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, crossing a built-up area of 19th century buildings, including the Palácio Foz and the Misericórdia of Lisboa. The funicular includes two cars that operate parallel along two axes, that descend and climb simultaneously.

Finding the Unexpected in Lisbon’s Bairro Alto District | Style Jaunt: Video 2
Style Jaunt is not only about shopping, it’s also about finding hidden gems in unexpected neighbourhoods. The Bairro Alto district has a reputation for amazing nightlife and restaurants, but what about about the many personalities and communities that make this place so vibrant and interesting? After a nice breakfast on the rooftop terrace at Hotel do Chiado, Gracie and Camille go to Facto Hair Salon to have local rock star Antony Millard style their hair as he explains that it is the eclectic people living in this neighbourhood that actually make it such a vibrant, one-of-a-kind place to visit. Although Bairro Alto is filled with fabulous places for cocktails and all sorts of great eateries, it is still a great place to visit during the day with the many street-art murals and walk-in boutiques such as Sky Walker and Véronique Boutique.
Lisbon is a city that was built on seven hills, which makes it perfect for streetcar cruising or watching the gorgeous sunset. Bloggers Camille and Gracie decide to finish their day at Pharmacia sipping cocktails on one of the most beautiful terraces in Lisbon, right above a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the river.
