Lijiang, China - A Vibrant & Amazing City
Terry Hodgkinson aka wandering ninja wanders through the beautiful city of Lijiang, the second of Yunnan's northwestern unique cities.
What a great city! I had a lot of fun hanging out in Lijiang everybody was so friendly and festive. The arcutecture and design of the city was quite impressive and mountains in the background were stunning. There was so much to do and see and a nice quiet lake to do some meditation by.

Background Info:
Lijiang is very pleasing to the eye. Narrow, cobbled streets wind through a labyrinth of wood and stone buildings with up-swept roofs. The best part are canals cut into the stone roads, filled with rushing water that tumbles down from nearby Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (a snow mountain in China is one that is covered in snow year-round). Several wells in the town center also contribute clear blue water to the canals. Stone and wood bridges cross the canals - three of which are channels of the Jade River. Lijiang has 354 bridges.
Lijiang City is located in the northwestern portion of Yunnan and borders Sichuan. It is in a region where the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau converge.
The world famous Old Town of Lijiang is located in Lijiang City. It is a UNESCO Heritage Site. The town has a history going back more than 800 years and was once a confluence for trade along the old tea horse road. The Lijiang old town is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. The old town of Lijiang differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Nakhi people.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Mountain) is the southernmost Glacier in the northern hemisphere.
It consist of 13 peaks and among them is Shanzidou at an altitude of 5,600 meters - chinatravelguide.com
Visitors can go to 3 places in the area to see the snow mountain : Glacier Park (altitude 4500m), Yak Meadow (altitude 3600m) and Spruce Meadow (altitude 3200m).
Blue Moon Valley lies at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain. It was fed by meltwater from Yulong Snow Mountain. The water of the lake is crystal clear with stunning shade of blue.
We went to Spruce Meadow and Blue Moon Valley in end of November 2019.

Baishui Glacier No 1 has the world’s third largest store of ice after Antarctica and Greenland, but it’s melting fast. Scientists say the glacier in Lijiang, Yunnan province, currently shrinks annually about one to two metres due to climate change. It has lost 60 percent of its mass since 1982.

Blue Moon Valley area is also called Shika Snow Mountain area it is located in the southwestern Shangri-La it is about 7km away from Shangril-La county with about 15 min driving. Cable in this attraction has began to serve since 2006. With a 4,190-meter-long, this cable is the longest one in Yunnan Province. People can get to the peak (4,000 meters above the sea level) from the foot of the mountain (3,270 meters above the sea level). When standing on the peak, people can have a view of Meili Snow Mountain, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, as well as snow mountains in Daocheng, Sichuan.Shika is a Tibetan word (Shangri-la dialect) meaning a mountain abounding in deer. It is said when Sakyamuni began to preach Buddhism in the Deer Park, two deer listened to him attentively in knee-down posture. Therefore, deer stands for common people and is regarded as mascots in Tibetan Buddhism. It is the symbol of longevity and strict adherence to dharma.

Melting glacier in China draws climate worries
