Camping and Hiking in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest
Hoang and I went camping with our friends Elizabeth and Rosa in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington. We camped in a dispersed campsite, not in a big campground. It was a secluded site with no other campsites within 2 miles of us. Since it wasn't in an established campground we had no running water or bathrooms. And, since it was so dry this year there was a fire ban so no campfires; but we could use tent heaters and camp stoves. We hiked to Boardman Lake one of the days and explored the winding National Forest roads up to about 3000 feet. We had a great time.
From Mountains to Prairies 2016 (Pt. 2) - Washington State's Bavarian Town of Leavenworth
July 2, 2016 - Welcome to Leavenworth, Washington, on the eastern side of the Northern Cascade Mountains. Leavenworth is located on the Wenatchee River where the forests of the Cascade Mountains and the dry interior of Washington State meet. Once just a sleepy little town with no character, locals then gave it a Bavarian makeover to increase tourism...and it totally worked. It brought me here, didn't it? I haven't been here since 1987 and, frankly, besides having WiFi, I doubt it's changes too much.
I made sure to stop at the local Christmas store, Kris Kringl, to pick up some items for my Christmas Village, too: a sasquatch. Of course!
Sadly I didn't have the time to visit the biergarten or sausage garten on this trip. Maybe next time.

America's Landlocked Navy: Farragut's WWII Memories
In 1941, The U.S. government selected a stretch of land on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille to build a new naval base during World War II. Crews poured their hearts, sweat and patriotism into building Farragut Naval Training Stations. Today, all that remains of Farragut are cracked cement foundations. But with archival photos and the memories, the base's glory days come alive again.
Produced in 1999.

Ore. Officials Restore Vanishing Salmon Species
(10 Mar 2017) COHO SALMON - A SPECIES DRIVEN OUT OF THIS PART OF OREGON MORE THAN 30 YEARS AGO BY HUMAN INTERFERENCE - HAS NOW RETURNED HOME.
HALF A MILLION OF THE BABY FISH WERE DUMPED INTO THIS REMOTE RIVER.
THE REINTRODUCTION PART OF A PLAN TO RESTORE THE REGION'S ECOLOGICAL BALANCE AND BRING A CHERISHED SPECIES BACK TO THE NEZ PERCE TRIBE.
SOUNDBITE (English), Michael Bisbee Jr., Coho program manager, Nez Perce tribe:
We're fishermen and, you know this river has right now probably got steelhead returning. And there are chinook that come back and you know the one species that isn't here is the coho.
BUT THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF A LONG JOURNEY.
THESE FISH MUST NOW SWIM 600 MILES TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, DODGING HYDROELECTRIC DAMS AND PREDATORS ALONG THE WAY.
THEY WILL RETURN TO THIS RIVER IN TWO YEARS TO MATE, LAY THEIR EGGS AND DIE.
BUT THESE FISH STARTED LIFE HERE, AT THE CASCADE FISH HATCHERY 300 MILES AWAY, OUTSIDE PORTLAND.
RAISED IN CONCRETE POOLS, THEY WERE LOADED ONTO NINE SPECIALLY- DESIGNED WATER TANKERS FOR THE TRIP TO THEIR NEW HOME, CROWDED BY NETS TOWARDS A GIANT PUMP - UP A TUBE - THEN DOWN A SLIDE.
DOWN A DIFFERENT TUBE AND FINALLY INTO A WAITING TRUCK FOR THE TRIP ACROSS THE STATE.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH), Charles Axtell, Nez Perce tribal elder
We are speaking from the heart and our gladness for these fish coming back into this river and all the area, bringing something that has vanished that has come back. We are the circle of life.
THAT CIRCLE NOW COMPLETE FOR THIS TRIBE AND FOR THESE TINY SALMON.

Youtube automatically loads the video in very low resolution. It is up to you to increase the quality by selecting the little gear icon at the bottom right of the video window (hover your cursor over the video and you will see it).
If you are viewing this on a mobile device you will need to view it in the Youtube app to get the proper experience.

Goodell Creek Campground in North Cascade National Park offers RV and tent camping with no hookups. Water spigots and vault toilets are available. Adjacent to the Skagit River the small campground is often not full. Situated in a wooded setting just off Highway 20 the campground is best suited to small RVs and tent campers.
Just north of here is the Group campground consisting of 3 sites available for reservation or first come first served access (cheaper for first come first served).
Overall these are both unimpressive campgrounds. Paved roads with gravel/ dirt sites. Picnic tables and fire rings available.
