Ballarat, Victoria
Ballarat is a small city located about 90km west of Melbourne. After gold was discovered in the 1850s, towns like Ballarat sprung up. The many grand Victorian buildings showcase the sheer wealth pouring into the state at the time.

In and Around Ballarat (1927)
In June 1927 Bert Ive produced the best surviving Ballarat documentary of the silent era.
The footage starts from Blackhill Lookout looking west down MacArthur Street towards Lake Wendouree showing the mining dumps which are unrecognisable today and the electric trams which served commuters from 1905 until 1971.
The film presents a modern inland city of post-First World War industry and agriculture, but we are still reminded of the glory days of the gold rush with men holding plaster models of some of the nuggets found during the mining boom, including the 69 kilogram 'Welcome Nugget’ found at Bakery Hill on 9 June 1858, the biggest lump of gold the world had ever seen.
The Eureka Rebellion is represented by the statue of rebel leader Peter Lalor erected in 1893 with the Eureka Stockade plaque on its base. Lalor survived the rebellion and lived to become a parliamentarian.

Jacob Rumbiak Swearing the Eureka oath at Bakery Hill, Ballarat, December 3, 2010
Young Tarryn from Melbourne and Jacob Rumbiak, a West Papua Independence movement activist who was imprisoned and tortured by Indonesian authorities, lead the swearing of the Eureka Oath at Bakery Hill on December 3, 2010. The commemoration ceremony celebrates the spirit of the Eureka Rebellion in 1854 and is part of a series of events held on the anniversary of the crushing of the Eureka rebellion by British troops (redcoats) and the newly formed Victoria Police.
The presence of Jacob Rumbiak and two fellow West Papuans brought home the ongoing fight for justice, and human rights and liberties in our region. In Australia the diggers selected the southern cross as their iconic emblem. In West Papua the independence movement selected the morning star as the iconic symbol on their flag.
