Taman Negara Bako National Park is a biodiverse nature reserve in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. The park offers opportunities for hiking and wildlife watching and is an easy getaway from Sarawak's capital, the city of Kuching.
We had the opportunity to visit Bako National Park during our recent trip to Sarawak and were fascinated by the abundance of wildlife within the park’s borders. A 2-day trip to Bako National Park was a fantastic way to escape the Kuching City and spend some time in nature.
The highlight of our visit was spotting endangered species of monkeys, like the probosci's monkeys and silver-leaf monkeys, as well as wild pigs, and even snakes.

East Malaysia and Borneo island as whole have given me some of the best experiences of my life. I have fallen in love with Sabah and Sarawak! I love it so much that I don't want to leave! Unfortunately everything eventually comes to an end. I decided to spend my last few days in Borneo exploring Bako National park off the coast of Kuching. It was another memorable trip and was so much fun!

We saw WILD BOAR on the BEACH at BAKO NATIONAL PARK in SARAWAK MALAYSIA! Who said you need to go to Exuma to see pigs on a beach? Well they have them right here in Sarawak, Malaysia and its all natural! BAKO NATIONAL PARK consists of many hiking trails. There are only 3 trails you can do if you take a day trip to the park. You can do much more, and see more of the island if you stay over night. We did a quick day trip to BAKO NATIONAL PARK and it was a perfect amount for us! We saw WILD BOAR and SILVER LEAF MONKEYS! The trail we hiked lead to a beautiful view on a beach. We would definitely go back for another round if we are ever given the chance to.

Ben Fogle's Sarawak Adventures - Bako National Park
In this five minute video we see adventurer and explorer Ben Fogle heading out by boat, firstly, to Salak river and the Kuching Wetlands with Rahim H Bugo the Managing Director. En route they see crocodiles, monkeys, crabs and one of six species of dolphin that can be found in the river -- the Irrawaddy dolphin. As he visits a long established charcoal factory he notes that the incredible thing about the rainforest is that it really is like nature's own supermarket -- it supplies just about everything you could need: fruit, food, water, wood for boats and shelters and materials for rattan as well as turning the wood into charcoal.
Next Ben, arrives at Bako National Park that is inaccessible by road. This makes it unique -- it is situated on the tip of a peninsula which helps to protect all the indigenous animals that live there. The main attraction is of course the proboscis monkey that is endemic to Borneo, but we also see Ben get up close and personal not only with a bearded pig, but with a pit viper.

Bako National Park is a national park in Kuching Division, Sarawak, Malaysia. Established in 1957, it is the oldest national park in Sarawak. It covers an area of 27.27 square kilometres (10.53 sq mi) at the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula at the mouth of the Bako and Kuching Rivers. It is approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) by road from Kuching. Millions of years of erosion of the sandstone have created a coastline of steep cliffs, rocky headlands and stretches of white, sandy bays. Wave erosion at the base of the cliffs has carved many of the rocky headlands into fantastically shaped sea arches and seastacks with colored patterns formed by iron deposition.The most famous of them is shaped like a cobra's head which can be spotted on a boat ride from the headquarters or one of the beaches. Some of these rock formations can be seen on entry to the Teluk Assam Beach, which fronts the park. The park can only be reached by a 20-minute boat ride from the village of Kampung Bako. It is often visited as a day-trip from Kuching, though accommodations (campground and forestry service bungalows) are available.

In October 2017 we travelled to Bako National Park in Kuching, Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo). Borneo is the only place to see the famous Proboscis monkey and you can see so many in Bako National Park! It’s great to do as a day trip from Kuching, but staying overnight is the absolute best as the monkeys come out right before sunset!

In the south-western corner of Malaysian Borneo lies Bako National Park. This unique nature park is known for its great variety of flora and fauna and is definitely worth a visit.
In Bako National Park, the jungle meets the ocean. This means you can admire sandstone cliffs and tropical beaches, but also a mangrove forest and dense jungle.
The most famous residents of Bako are the rare Proboscis monkeys, found only on Borneo.
In addition, the park is home to far more animals, including many other species of monkeys, but also wild boars, snakes, and the remarkable colugo .
Bako National Park is best reached from the city of Kuching, where you can take a bus to Kampong Bako. From here you can book a boat, which will bring you to the park headquarters in 20 minutes. Be prepared for a rough ride!
There are several hiking trails through the park, all of which start at the park headquarters. The routes vary in length and cater to different levels of fitness. They range from 30 minutes to 7 hours.
So, will you be visiting Southern Malaysian Borneo? Then make sure to plan a day trip to Bako National Park!
