Muskoka's Bala Falls
This project has been begun by provincial policy,
aimed at developing new clean, renewable, green sources of power generation in order to reduce Ontarios dependence on dirty, coal-fired sources of electricity production.
It is controlled by various levels and divisions of our government (MNR, Ontarios Environmental Assessment Act (O.Reg. 116/01), & Canadian Environmental Assessment Act but they are bureaucrats responding to government policy, driven by taxpayers. It is too bad that those who most protest its development are those who pollute air, land, and water with out dated septic systems, gas guzzling vehicles, high speed boats, snowmobiles, and PWCs that drive endlessly in circles on our precious transitways and Muskoka Lakes.

Easter 2013 at North Bala Falls, Bala Ontario
Is this the last Easter for the North Bala Falls? I certainly hope not BUT it may be just that!!! If a developer, empowered by former Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, gets it way, by next Easter and for at least the next 40 Easters to follow the flow will be reduced to a mere trickle! This should not be allowed to happen and there is still time to voice your opposition to this horrific project. For more information visit: savethebalafalls.com

Doug Ford in Bala, Ontario, February 27, 2018
On February 27, 2018 Doug Ford visited Bala, and promised he would stop the proposed hydro-electric generating station. Not only would it be dangerous, but the power would cost more than double what renewable energy costs elsewhere.
Bala Falls (Stage 2) - Hydro Project by Horizon Legacy
The North Bala Small Hydro Project is a new 4.7 Megawatt (MW) run-of-river waterpower facility at the south end of Bala's North Dam, located in the Town of Bala, Township of Muskoka Lakes, Ontario. The North Dam is owned by Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF).
This project was guided through an exhaustive environmental assessment and community consultation process by Karen McGhee and her firm McGhee Krizsan Engineering Ltd.
The project is expected to:
- Improve water level and spring/fall flood control
- Have low environmental impact due to synergy with existing structures
- Annually offset 20,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to 3,888 cars and light trucks off the road
- Create over 80 new jobs during construction
