Undercut Stone Carving of Ramnagar | Varanasi
Visit:
On the other side of the Ganges resides Ramnagar. Meanwhile, in Ramnagar lives one beautiful art that is a perfect mixture of simplicity and prodigality. The locals of 'Bhang Wali Gali' are traditionally been involved in the work of elegant carving works for generations. Ivory, Bone and Sandalwood was for the artwork in older days, which are replaced by marble rock tablets now.
The outcomes of the work are not just very beautiful but also stupefying as the precise design involves net like carvings above the model and inside the model. The model are fine and hollow from inside. The beautiful decorative pieces are result of minute arts of excellent caliber.

An Indian artisan crafts marble inlay
Indian craftsman demonstrate marble inlay at a factory in Agra.
Agra is famous for its heritage and culture, but it is also a leading place to witness as well as buy items made from marble. Known as marble inlay work, this intricate art form is a closely guarded secret, and passed on for several generations within a small, well-knit community. In this hour-long activity, we will take you to a place where you will observe a live demonstration of this art, in an air-conditioned Swift or a similar car. It begins with a floral design or geometrical design engraved on the marble slab. Then, small pieces of different marble shades are cut delicately to fit in these groove, to create the final product. Along with the marbles, a few other materials are also used to get it a finished look. This art form became extremely popular during the Mughal era and its fame spread far and wide.
First the artisans draw a design on paper and decide how many pieces of which stone go where. Then they carve the stones on big grinding wheels until they are the exact shape on the paper. You can sort of see the wheels in the background of the second picture.
Only then, to make sure the stones fit correctly within the marble, do they lay the carved stones out on the marble, trace them, and carve the marble accordingly. They cover the marble with red…stuff to better be able to see where has been carved.
They then paste the stones into the hollows using a “glue recipe handed down since the Taj Mahal”. The marble is cleaned and polished until there is no height difference between the inlaid stones and the marble backing.

Raja Harish Chandra Ghat in Varanasi
Birth and death in the city of birth and death! A man collects human ashes and dumps them to a side, even as a corpse burns on the pyre, at the edge of the Ganges river in the ancient city of Benaras, known equally for sarees, filth, squalor, re-birth, religion and more... A family stands by as their loved one's corpse burns to ashes, along India's Ganga river. Pigeons fly around, cows amble by, as piles of wood stand nearby, for use in cremation ceremonies along the famous Burning Ghats of Varanasi's river-side, in this ancient city of India.
Yet others wash their clothes in the river, while an old man performs his ablutions (bathes!) in the relatively slow-flowing waters...
Life goes on and by... Another huge stash of wood appears. That many more cremations to take place. Birth and death... All one and the same.
Pandits and pujaris do good business. Indians and foreigners alike (even A-list Hollywood stars, strangely enough) flock to this city's strange magnetism. The filth and squalor of the town, the pollution and waste, the untreated sewage and drain waters, all mingle in the once pristine waters of the Ganga, now sullied with waste. But nothing deters...

Banarasi saree shop at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
Varanasi has the pride of being the one of the most famous Banarasi saree handloom centers in the entire world.
Banarasi saris are made in Varanasi, a city which is also called Benares. These saris are historically considered to be among the finest saris in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk and opulent embroidery, and being highly sought after. These saris are made of finely woven silk and are decorated with intricate design, and because of these engravings, these saris are relatively heavy. Their special characteristics are Mughal inspired designs such as intricate intertwining floral and foliate motifs, kalga and bel, a string of upright leaves called jhallar at the outer, edge of border is a characteristic of these sarees. Other distinctive features are Heavy gold work, Compact weaving, figures with small details, metallic visual effects, pallus, jal and mina work. These saris are an inevitable part of any Indian bride's trousseau.
Depending upon the intricacy of designs and patterns, a sari can take anywhere from 15 days to a one month and sometimes up to six months to complete. Banarasi saris are mostly worn by Indian women on important occasions such as when attending a wedding and are expected to be complemented by the woman's best jewelry. Today there are four main varieties of Banarasi sari, which includes pure silk (Katan), Organza (Kora) with Zari and silk; Georgette, and Shattir, and according to design process, they are divided into categories like, Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tissue and Butidar.
Over the years, the Banarasi Silk handloom industry has been incurring huge losses because of the unfair competition from mechanised units producing the 'Baranasi silk sarees' at a much faster rate and at much cheaper cost, another source of competition has been sarees made of cheaper synthetic alternatives to silk. In 2009, after two years of wait, weaver associations in Uttar Pradesh, secured Geographical Indication (GI) rights for the 'Banaras Brocades and Sarees'. GI is an intellectual property right, which identifies a good as originating in a certain region where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the product is essentially attributable to its geographical origin.
Varanasi also commonly known as Benares or Benaras and Kashi, is a city situated on the banks of the River Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (199 mi) southeast of state capital Lucknow. It is regarded as a holy city by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the oldest in India.
