Krishna Temple - Hampi, KARNATAKA...Part (4)
The Krishna temple which is on the rising ground just above the Ishvara shrine was built by Krishnadeva Raya in 1513 A.D., the image of which he had brought from a temple in Udayagiri in the Nellore districts of Andhra Pradesh. Now the idol is housed in the Madras museum. This is one of the must see sites in Hampi. The carvings are especially spectacular with the Yalis (the mythical lion) on the pillars and the entrances to the temple hall flanged with impressive carvings of elephant balustrades. Many small shrines and pillared halls adorn the campus. The temple kitchen is located at the south east of the main shrine. The main tower at the east is an impressive sight with numerous carvings on it (now the tower is under restoration work). You can see the carvings of the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu in this temple.
This is one of the few temples where the epic stories carved on the walls of the tower. This is fairly an intact specimen of a Vijayanagara era temple.

This temple was built by the king (Krishnadevaraya) in 1513 AD to celebrate the conquest of the eastern kingdom of Udayagiri or Utkala (in the present day Orissa state).
The main idol installed in the temple was the figure of Balakrishna (Lord Krishna as infant). This idol is now displayed in the state museum at Chennai. A huge slab installed inside the courtyard of the temple states the story of this temple and the conquest of Ulkala.
This is one of the must see sites in Hampi. The carvings are especially spectacular with the Yalis (the mythical lion) on the pillars and the entrances to the temple hall flanged with impressive carvings of elephant balustrades.
Many small shrines and pillared halls adorn the campus. The temple kitchen is located at the south east of the main shrine.
The main tower at the east is an impressive sight with numerous carvings on it (now the tower is under restoration work). You can see the carvings of the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu in this temple.

The main temple hall The main road to Hampi passes through the temple campus. You can spot a small pavilion with a rectangular stone container in front of the temple across the road.
This was used to store grains for the ritual purpose in the temple festivals. The position and design of the vessel suggests devotees used to donate food grain as offering at the temple.

Musical pillars at Vithala Temple, Hampi
As the epicenter of Hampi's attractions, Vittala Temple is the most extravagant architectural showpiece of Hampi. No amount of words can explain this spectacle. The temple is built in the form of a sprawling campus with compound wall and gateway towers. There are many halls, pavilions and temples located inside this campus.
Vittala, after whom the temple is known, is a form of lord Vishnu. This aspect of Vishnu was worshiped in this part of the country as their cult deity by the cattle herds (see Gods of Hampi).
The temple was originally built in the 15th century AD. Many successive kings have enhanced the temple campus during their regimes to the present form. You can even see the remains of a township called Vittalapura that existed around this temple complex. The highlight of Vittala temple is its impressive pillared halls and the stone chariot. The halls are carved with an overwhelming array of sculptures on the giant granite pillars. The stone chariot located inside the campus is almost an iconic structure of Hampi.

Hampi is an ancient village located on the banks of River Tungabhadra in the southern state of Karnataka in India. Hampi is recognised by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites in India. The village stands within the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire.
Hampi is an extremely significant place in terms of history and architecture. No wonder, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South India. There is a proposal to make Hampi and Machu Picchu to become Twin Heritage sites.
Hampi was known by several names in the ancient times, such as Pampa-kshetra, Bhaskara-kshetra, Hampe and Kishkinda-kshetra. The history of Hampi can be traced back to 1 CE as it is believed that the first historical settlements in Hampi dates back to that era. The name Hampi was derived from the Kannada name Hampe that in turn was derived from Pampa, the old name of River Tungabhadra.
The seat of the Vijayanagara Empire was established by Saint Vidyaranya in 1336 A.D. with the help of two of his disciples, Hakka and Bukka. The Empire became a prosperous and wealthy kingdom within a very short time. The kingdom flourished under the rule of Emperor Krishnadevaraya and stretched over the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and was an extremely important part of the Empire from 1343 to 1565. The small village became renowned because of its immense wealth, flourishing art, literature and trade at that time. But, the invading Moghul forces destroyed Vijayanagara and ruined Hampi and the other places of the empire.

The Hanging Pillar of Lepakshi Temple | Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh
The Hanging Pillar of Veerabhadra Temple, Lepakshi is located in the Anantpur district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The distance of the temple is around 130 km from Bangalore through the NH7 (Bangalore-Hyderabad highway) and great for a day trip. After crossing the Karnataka-Andhra boarder keep looking for signboard directing towards Lepakshi. You can find it around at a distance of 3-4 Km from the border. Here you need to take a left turn on a road which goes to Lepakshi. From here temple is around 18 KM.
