Introducing the Deakin Food Charter - Balance
As part of our commitment to enhancing campus environments, in 2017 we launched the Deakin Food Charter. Based on feedback from our students and staff, this set of principles is supported by the university's Faculty of Health and guides a balanced food and drink offering across Deakin.
The aim? To provide choice in our food offer that meets the needs of our vibrant, complex community. The Charter is based on five pillars – healthy, informed, balanced, easy and sustainable – that focus on everything from fresh, seasonal ingredients to reduced packaging or no minimum EFTPOS.

I believe food is there to be enjoyed as well as nourish us. Moderation is the key to indulging in your favorite foods while maintaining a healthy diet.
The secret sauce is pleasure not avoidance
Food rejuvenates the soul and an occasional treat can help revive us, as much as the healthiest food product can. This no-nonsense attitude and balanced view has made me a popular media commentator on all things diet and nutrition. With expertise in adult lifestyle diseases, diabetes, sports and paediatric nutrition, I am able to offer a broad base of knowledge in the field of dietetics.
Dietitians such as myself assist with advice on good & bad fats, high & low glycemic indices and proteins vs carbs in our diets.
I completed my Bachelor of Science just down the road at Deakin University in1990, then completed a Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics at Flinders University in 1992. I have also completed further specialized dietetics training and study in Paediatric, Diabetes Education and Sports Nutrition.
As you can see from the video I have presented the Nutrition segment on Channel Seven in a series for IGA called Food4Life as well as 6 television advertisements for the Kraft Kitchens campaign.
I have also been Victorian representative for the Dieticians Association of Australia and currently the Nutrition consultant for Chefs Ink and regularly write for Food On Tap.
In Australia there is a distinction made between dietitians and other occupations in the nutrition and food science field, including that of nutritionist.
The key difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist is that, in addition to or as part of their qualification in human nutrition, a dietitian has undertaken a course of study that includes substantial theory, supervised and assessed professional practice in clinical nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and food service management.
Therefore, in Australia, all dietitians are considered to be nutritionists however, nutritionists without a dietetics qualification cannot take on the specialised role of a dietitian.
There is no industry specific assessing authority that assesses the qualifications of nutritionists who are not dietitians.
To ensure you are receiving expert nutrition advice, always inquire about the qualifications of a dietitian or nutritionist and look for the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) credential.
What is an APD?
Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) have the qualifications and skills to provide expert nutrition and dietary advice. APDs are university-qualified professionals that undertake ongoing training and education programs to ensure that they are your most up-to-date and credible source of nutrition information.
APDs are trained to assess nutritional needs. They also assist people to manage health conditions and diseases using food as Medical Nutrition Therapy. APDs help treat a wide range of conditions including diabetes, heart disease, cancers, gastrointestinal diseases, food allergies, food intolerance's, disordered eating as well as overweight and obesity.
APDs can help with everyday healthy eating by translating scientific health and nutrition information into practical advice.

If the system was really working, and by the system I am referring to the construct of,
‘go to school, study hard, get good grades, get a good job, buy a house,
pay it off and eventually retire and relax with your grandchildren in the
quarter-acre back yard, playing cricket or footy,’
was really working…then the stats mentioned above would be reversed and the vast
majority of Australians today would be retiring with well over $1.5million dollars as a
lump sum in their superannuation fund, equating to some $75,000 income per year,
per individual, assuming a 5% rate of return.
The reality is that even though we are living in possibly the best country in the world,
one that not only boasts natural beauty, political and economic stability, a lot of
Australians are living a life of quiet desperation, mainly because they never truly made
the decision to take control of their finances or even learn the fundamentals of how
to properly invest, conduct a basic cash-flow analysis, feasibility assessments on
potential investments or how to do basic things like structuring their home loans
correctly and how to manage their day-to-day finances correctly.
The stark reality is that many Australians are not aware of the magnitude of the
disaster facing them in the future. Research by The Investment and Financial Services
Association has found that Australians do not have enough in superannuation savings
to live comfortably in retirement. The savings gap has increased from national levels
of about $452 billion in 2004 to $695 billion dollars as at June 2018.
This means that a significant number of Australians who aim to retire in the next
decade will wake up to a grim reality when they find that their superannuation nest
egg will not be able to provide them with a comfortable retirement until they die.
In 2018, data from the University of Canberra research centre, The National Centre for
Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM), found that the average Australian woman
aged 55 to 64 years, was estimated to have an average superannuation balance
of about $54,500 with the average Australian male’s superannuation balance at
$113,200. This would realistically translate into 2 to 3 years of income before the
funds are completely exhausted.
With the average life expectancy climbing into the 90s for those who make it to 65,
the drain on the Australian tax payer’s and government’s purses will only escalate,
as retirees will be forced to rely on the age pension as their personal funds run out.
Actuarial modelling using an income of $19,399 a year as the “modest” benchmark
and $37,452 as a “comfortable” amount for an individual’s needs, found Australian
retirees would need a superannuation fund balance of $500,000 in order to draw
down a comfortable amount each year to the age of 89; which is still shy of the
average life expectancy of someone who is currently 65 years of age.
And let’s face it, what the hell are you going to do on $19,399 per year in Melbourne,
Sydney or Brisbane?
Bear in mind that it equates to $373.05 per week…
Now I don’t mean to be offensive to anyone watching this youtube video, but when you retire,
don’t you want to be cashed up, travelling the world, spending time with friends
and family, and splashing out on their presents - not having to worry about bills and
overheads?
Well there is a solution...watch this video to find out exactly what that is.

This is shooting - a reflection of who we are
Positive interest in the shooting sports continues to grow and nearly 70 years since the formation of the SSAA, there’s much to be proud of. In this documentary-style video, filmed script-free on location at our gun clubs and on the land, several shooters share their experiences with shooting and what it means to them to be a shooter. The stars of the video - including a family of target shooters who call their club their second home, a past champion turned coach who also happens to be in a wheelchair, a keen international handgun competitor, and a farmer who manages pest animals to protect his livelihood - are real SSAA shooters and true reflections of the diversity and inclusiveness of recreational shooting and the SSAA today.

INTRODUCTION
Bowen Therapy, developed in Australia by the late Tom Bowen (1916-1982) is a remedial, therapeutic system of moves that is applied using very gentle pressure. The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise acupressure points of the body to perform Bowen’s unique sets of rolling-type moves which stimulate the muscles and soft tissue of the body. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. The Bowen Technique prompts the body to reset, repair and balance itself and clients report the experience of pain relief, improvement of function and recovery of energy.
Over the last 50 years, Bowen Therapy has been repeatedly shown in case studies to afford thousands of patients lasting relief from chronic pain and a plethora of ailments. It is one of the most effective, long lasting, and relaxing treatments available today. Because Bowen Therapy relieves the body’s reactive patterns to injury, pain, and misalignment, it is suitable for both acute and chronic conditions and is designed as an overall tonic to the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
TOM BOWEN (1916-1982)
Tom Bowen was a humble man who had an incredible impact on humanity as we know it today. As a veteran of WWII, he was imbued with a strong desire to alleviate human suffering. Although he had no formal training in the health field, he had a strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology and noticed that certain types of moves had specific effects on the body. As he continued to develop what is known today as Bowen Therapy, he affectionately called it a “Gift from God”.
Bowen Therapy is a unique therapeutic system that is now practiced in over 40 countries worldwide, with miraculous results: children learning to walk again after being crippled in braces, lifelong health issues being resolved, and many saved from the surgeon’s knife. Beginning in 1957, Tom Bowen worked closely with his colleague, Rene Horwood, at her home office in Geelong, Australia. They practiced every evening after work, often going late into the mornings, performing house-calls for sick children. They then moved into a retired doctor’s clinic and ran it full-time, accepting donations for their services. At that time, it was estimated they would serve an average of 65 people per day (sometimes up to 100).
In 1975, several years before Tom Bowen’s death, a public inquiry of the government of Victoria in Australia into alternative health care professionals reported that Bowen treated an estimated 13,000 patients per year, with an 80 percent success rate in symptoms that were associated with a wide range of conditions. Considering treatments were seven days apart and most people needed only three to five treatments, an amazing number of clients passed through the clinic and benefited from his gift.
Tom also held free clinics for children, people with disabilities, and community service workers. In memory of his own granddaughter who suffered from a disability and died at an early age, he ran a clinic for children with disabilities on Saturday mornings through which he offered many children an improved quality of life. He devoted his life to them, and many affectionately called him, “Uncle Tom”.
Tom also worked many sports clubs around Geelong. On Saturday afternoons, he attended to injured footballers, treating them and others on Saturday evenings at the clinics. These were also given freely. Tom Bowen was known to attend Geelong jail on Sunday mornings to treat injured inmates, as well assist Victoria police, treating them at all hours of the night and day.
He was an honourary member of the Geelong Crime Car squad and the second member of public to ever be given this award. Other achievements of him and his partner were treating TV personalities, opera singers, and Melbourne Cup racehorses with amazing results. People came from all over Australia to observe the clinic and therapy he had developed. When Tom died in 1982, his apprentices carried on his work, passing on the knowledge of the Bowen Therapy Technique to the rest of the world.
