COB News Network - Asian Waterbird Census 2018
COB wetlands once again teemed with migratory birds as evidenced in the annual Bird Census conducted on January 20.
Among those birds viewed were white birds known as “egrets”, long-legged birds called “black-winged stilts,” plovers, and some new species called “collared” and “common” kingfisher. Some terns were also seen hovering around and diving for food.
These water birds come to warmer places like City of Balanga’s wetland park from different countries to escape the cold winter months in mainland Asia and Europe. They will stay and feed for a while, and eventually return to their country of origin once the harsh winter season is over.
The number of birds that wandered in the area dropped from 15,072 in 2017to 13,065 this year as per data from the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP). This, not because the area has become inhospitable to the birds, but because of the lack of required expert manpower to conduct the count.
Whiskered Terns are the most commonly found birds in the wetlands, totaling 6,260.
WBCP and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources believe that migratory birds usually stay in areas where the environment is favorable.
The event was conducted to promote public participation in monitoring the distribution, population and trends of water birds, and the status of wetlands in the Asian region. Success of the activity was achieved in collaboration with various stakeholders like the WBCP, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of Tourism (DOT), the Sangguniang Barangays of Pto. Rivas-Ibaba, Pto. Rivas-Lote, Tortugas, Sibacan and Tuyo.
