S1E7: Balconies Caves - Pinnacles National Park, CA - March 19, 2017
- Pinnacles National Park - Balconies Cave Trail, CA - March 19, 2017
Jim’s family joins us once again as we head to the Balconies Cave in Pinnacles National Park.
We did not disappoint in that we ended up having to change our initial route yet again. I'm sure these aren't things can be fixed by better planning. They're just unavoidable hurdles we have to consistently overcome ;)
The route we did take was a 2.5 mile lollipop loop, created by taking the Balconies Cave Trail and the Balconies Cliffs Trail.
A very enjoyable hike, again great for the whole family. The caves are a really nice destination as well, especially as it gets hotter. After hiking a little ways in the heat, you get to cool off, walking through the caves before heading back to the trails and eventually to the parking lot.
Getting to the caves is real flat, with a descent into the caves, making the trip back to the car a little more uphill than the start. Not too bad though as you do level out before reaching the parking lot, so it's not a constant climb.

Pinnacles National Park / Featuring The Balconies Cave Trail
We hiked the Balconies Cave Trail at Pinnacles National Park, and it wasn't a trail for the weak of heart. At some point, the trail seems to come to an end, but in reality, it disappears in to a cave at the bottom of the rocks. This is an awesome trail and a pretty cool new national park as well.

Hiking Pinnacles National Park - Balconies Cave Trail
Hiking Pinnacles National Park. I took another trip out to Pinnacles National Park to hike the Balconies Cave trail. This was a pretty exciting trail with the views of the valley walls, and of course the caves. The caves on the Balconies cave trail offer a bit more excitement then the bear Gulch Caves trail. I followed a trail that took me almost straight down into total darkness. Pretty spooky as I was almost completely alone. So come along with me on the Pinnacles Balconies Cave Trail hike.
Enjoy

Tour the Rose Canyon Fault - San Diego's Biggest Earthquake Threat
The Big One on the San Andreas Fault is something that all of California should be ready for. Surprisingly enough, San Diego fares well in the damage models for such an earthquake. But there's a lesser known fault running through the heart of the city, and it has the attention of emergency planners.
Dr. Pat Abbott, a geology professor at San Diego State University, shows us where you can see signs of the Rose Canyon Fault, and how dangerous it could be.

Pinnacles National Park, California (July 2015)
It was 9,5 miles hiking and we used this route: Summer conditions can be fierce on hikers in this park. Too important to bring plenty of water with you. 5 bottles (0,5 l) are not enough for 2 persons. Wear a hat and bring a flashlight.
