Smiths crossing Bundaberg Regional Council vandalism of volunteers work 14 2 16
The mindless cutting down of another tree by council ,whats new you say ?. Well read on.
Well not only was the Rusty Mahogany tree (Dysoxylum Rufus)at least 150 years old it also managed to survive the 2013 flood which decimated the site. Further to this it sits in a bush land setting 20 kilometers out of Bundaberg,
But check out the video, the tree was cut right next to a sign advertising our phone numbers for work bees on the site ,but could any half wit ring us ,not this council or its representatives, and this is only one of more than a half dozen similar acts of council vandalism done to our site since its inception.
In fact this was one of the very first trees we saved on the site some 13 years ago,and a tree we have sat under for that amount of time to have lunch with our volunteers .
On November 19th 2015 we sent a letter to council requesting a change of the areas designation from Recreation to Environmental uses to thus support our 13 years of hard labor saving this magnificent rain-forest from cats claw creeper-so is this councils response we ask ?
But let me preempt what will be the councils standard response -' the tree was a public risk ,it was diseased/damaged and and therefore had to be removed' -My response -Bullshit council -the heart of this tree is healthy ,this is a dry rain forest tree ,you do not have to cut a tree to the base and chip it because it has a damaged limb when it is standing in a bush-land area, cut it to 5 meters or wherever the damage ended but do not cut it to the base as it would not be anywhere near parkland even once it re shot - seems there's plenty of money to waste in council removing beautiful native trees but none to remove weed species which are everywhere in this town-how much did this cost council -the costs are usually about 3k minimum for this work .
Bundaberg Landcare has always sought to create a healthy respectful relationship with BRC parks and gardens however respect cuts 2 ways and indeed it was the lack of consultation on this very same issue which gave birth to the councils CCAG -community consultation advisory group-is it working ?-plainly not so that is why we turn to social media as our only outlet to show the community what is happening to land in the councils care.
