Should you visit Tenganan, the oldest village in Bali?
Bali Tourist Attraction - Tenganan Village
Is the Tenganan Village a must do cultural experience or is it a tourist trap? In this video we’re going to talk about our experience at the Tenganan Village and let you know if you should even add this to your list of things to see in Bali.
Tenganan Village is the oldest village in Bali and is unique as they have their own laws and customs which are quite different from the current Balinese people.
The village is well know as one of the few places in the world you can buy double ikat weavings. This form of weaving requires the most skill for precise patterns to be woven and is considered the premiere form of ikat.
Once a year the village holds the Mekare Kare Ceremony. It looks like a very strange and painful ritual that involves fighting between the men of the village. They attempt to rub a spiky pandan leaf on the backs of their opponent.
We also discuss our thoughts on some of the reviews online of the Tenganan Village. Some reviews say this place is a tourist trap with over priced goods.

Tenganan, das Dorf der Bali Aga
please read more:
***[en.]
Tenganan is a village on Bali where the inhabitants are part of the Bali Aga people. The Bali Aga people are the original inhabitants of Bali. For millennia they led a strictly insulated and withdrawn life in their villages. As they belong to the landowners, they have no need to do physical work. The surrounding rice fields are cultivated by Balinese.
The Bali Aga are mainly engaged in arts and crafts. This includes the production of the so-called Lontarbooks. These are Hindu epics carved on the leaves of the Asian palmyra palm. The women weave Geringsing cloths with the double ikat weaving technique. These are intended to ward off disease. Since the production is extremely complicated and lengthy, the cloths are precious and highly sought after.
The social life in Tenganan is strictly regulated . Those who do not marry a partner from its own village must leave the village. So the Bali Agas could keep their wealth.
After visiting the village, we stop again at a fishing village on the coast at Labih.
TRUNYAN BALI: A SHOCKING CEMETERY IN INDONESIA
Trunyan Village Cemetery in Bali was a challenging experience for me. We rarely see dead bodies in the western world, and we have a very finite view on death. Trunyan village is located deep in the centre of Bali, nestled beside a crater lake and mount Batur, and is quite hard to get to.
Here, they still follow a tradition that was set in place over a thousand years ago. They place their dead under a Terumanyan Tree, supposedly the last of it's kind, to mask it's beautiful scent.
The legend says that the smell of the tree was so sweet, that people from all over the island would come to try and find its source. The village of Trunyan was overrun with travellers. A man arrived and met a woman, he wanted to marry her. She insisted that before they were to be wed, the man has to find a way to stop the smell of the tree. The man found a very unique way to do so, and so began the tradition of placing dead bodies under the tree.
Now, we can visit the cemetery and see death face to face. There are 11 exposed graves beside the famous tree. The people living here are the descendants of the original Balinse people called Aga, and both the village and the tree derive their name from their language. Taru meaning 'tree' and Menyan meaning 'nice smell'.
There are a lot of poor reviews of this place. The locals are having a hard time appropriately managing the travellers that arrive. It's also quite small, and depending if anyone has died recently, there may or may not be a decomposing body. I have Yansu's contact below. I highly recommend you contact him.

Tenganan village. Bali.
Tenganan village. Bali. 2012.
Tenganan Pegringsingan is a village in the regency of Karangasem in Bali, Indonesia. Before the 1970s was known by anthropologists to be one of the most secluded societies of the archipelago.
Rapid changes have occurred in the village since the 70's, such as the development of local communications by the central government, the opening up to tourism, the breaking of the endogamic rules. Tourists are attracted to Tenganan by its unique Bali Aga culture that still holds to the original traditions, ceremonies and rules of ancient Balinese, and its unique village layout and architecture. It is known for its Gamelan selunding music and geringsing double ikat textiles.

BAMBOO U 11-DAY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP
After learning about the Green School and watching Elora Hardy’s TED Talk Magical houses, made of bamboo( Justin and I decided to attend Bamboo U. And so, we joined 32 other participants from over 20 countries to learn everything bamboo! We learned about the entire life cycle of bamboo, from sustainable forestry to design and construction.
The curriculum provided both theoretical and applied knowledge. We listened in on over 15 hours of classroom lectures and then participated in 11+ hands-on workshops.
The program included: bamboo forestry, harvesting, preservation, traditional carpentry and craftsmanship, engineering, model making and full-scale construction, and the fundamentals of sustainable bamboo architecture. The world’s top bamboo experts, including bamboo innovators, entrepreneurs, engineers, artists, and designers, were our instructors.
Our fellow classmates were students, engineers, architects, designers, artists, and entrepreneurs. Justin and I were in many ways the least experienced, comparatively, but that sometimes gave us a slight advantage as we didn’t have to “unlearn” some things. We listened, participated, and absorbed the new material through a fresh lens.
BAMBOO U IN A NUTSHELL
The Bamboo U program is a filled with knowledge, innovation, and uniquely curated experiences. We concluded each day with happily exhausted bodies and delightfully overflowing minds.
We graduated Bamboo U with a set of tools to help us build our upcoming project in the Philippines! Above all, we learned the essentials of bamboo construction while falling deeper in love with this versatile wild grass.
More importantly, Justin and I are now part of a special bamboo family! The best part of the program was meeting the diverse group of international classmates and facilitators from various backgrounds. The full-time curriculum encouraged us all to become friends immediately, as we worked hand-in-hand building models, retractable yurts, and full-scale reciprocal towers.

Kintamani Volcano
Bali volcano, also referred to as Kintamani volcano or Mount Batur as a whole, is a popular sightseeing destination in Bali's central highlands. The magnificent views of the 13sqkm Batur caldera lake serves as the main attraction, surrounded by the captivating Mount Batur range. You can find plenty more reasons to linger around the crater itself, while those with a penchant for adventure can also take a winding road down along the lake shore to Toya Bungkah, Ulun Danu Batur temple, and a collection of hot springs. The Kintamani area consists of three main villages, namely Penelokan, Batur, and Kintamani. There are also some old Balinese villages around Batur Lake, often referred to as Bali Aga villages. Penelokan is a popular stopover, serving as a vantage point at the southernmost of the crater rim, offering sweeping views over the Bali volcano.

Bali Cooking Class / Indonesia Food at Bali Farm School
We took an amazing Bali cooking class to experience cooking Indonesian Food with the Bali Farm School just outside of Ubud Bali.
If you are looking for what to do in Bali, then be sure to check out Bali Farm School. It's the only organic cooking class available in Bali. They have 2 classes per day and even allow children (with parents of course)!
We started out by going to the local Asia market, some might call a wet market, just north of Ubud Bali. Then we arrived at the cooking school to harvest some organic vegetables before we began cooking!
We were fortunate enough to attend with several families so it was an amazing experience as world travelers.

Explore Bali with #AirportID - Review The Oasis Lagoon Sanur
Hai sahabat Airporteve dan traveler sejati Indonesia :)
Bulan Mei lalu Airport.id berhasil mengadakan program perdananya Explore Indonesia with Airport.id.
