Ogoh - Ogoh di Bali 2014 (HD)

This morning after the breakfast in Ketut's Place' in Ubud we are invited by our landlord to see the last phase of the construction of the Ogoh-ogoh at the end of the street. The Ogoh-ogoh is the hugh image of a demon which will take part in the procession through and around Ubud which will start this afternoon and last until midnight to be burnt on the beach. The event is part of the Hindu New Year celebration, called Njepi.
So we do and get impressed by the skill of the (instant) artists working on the object. In a way it makes us remind of the Carnival figures in Western Europe, which mostly are less detailed than these ones, serving a different theme.
Back at 'Ketut's Place' it is time to get our gear together and say goodbye as our taxi bus has arrived in order to drive us to Legian.
In Legian we settle down at Melasti Beach Resort and set off for the beach.
The beach at Legian is nice but swimming is limited, not too far from the shore because of the tricky reefs through which water will suck you to the Bali Sea when the tide gets low. Caution on several billboards in different modern languages warn you, besides beach guards who address you when walk towards the waterline. Having been here more often we take care.
When taking a rest in the sand after a swim the sharp ears of my wife Nelleke pick up a scream out of the sea and she immediately jumps up and her eyes search in the direction the sound came from. More people are on the alert. But all we see is a bunch of water surfers in the distance, say one mile away. Again she and other pick up a distant scream in the strong wind but no one to be seen who might be in trouble.
Then eventually in the distance we spot water surfers approaching the beach very slowly as they seem to drag something with them on one of their surf boards.
With others we run to them and help the greyish body of a motionless swimmer onto the beach, but the body appears to be terrible heavy. Immediately out of the sea we lay him on his back and I turn his head to one side and start to press water out of his lungs and lots and lots of water and foam gulp out his mouth. At the moment that I'm about to breathe him, give him as it were the kiss for life, someone asks me whether I am a medic, for his partner appears to be a nurse and she immediately takes over. After a few efforts she gives up saying that the poor man is already too far away. Nelleke takes off her red pareyo and covers the pale body with it.
In the meantime beach guards have called for an ambulance which shows up in a minute and the ambulance servants lift the poor man unto a berry and hurry to the hospital nearby leaving all the beachcombers wordless. The ambulance people by the way appear to have a reputation of ongoing trying to wake up drowned people, sometimes with success. We still cherish a little hope...
You might wonder (or worse) why I took pictures of the poor guy and used it in this video. I intend to record everything what hits us whether being evil or beautiful and use it as an advice to take warnings serious. And it took me five years and a half to decide to compse the video and put it on YouTube. For you and your loved ones. Because sometimes we forget that all our acts have their consequences. Life can be so beautiful when everybody cooperates.
