TANDJUNG SARI
This film celebrates the 55th anniversary of the legendary Tandjung Sari, Bali’s original boutique hotel. In 1962, art collector Wija Wawo-Runtu built a small house on Sanur beach. It soon became a small hotel frequented by glitterati and Southeast Asia’s expatriates. It is still run by the Wawo-Runtu family. The film, illustrated with vintage images and contemporary photography, tells of the hotel’s challenges and triumphs, and the people behind it, with reflections on Bali’s tourism and architecture.
The Tandjung Sari is an ageless beauty. At fifty five years old, this small hotel on Sanur beach, shaded by huge trees and quietly sheltering treasure at every turn, remain serene, discreet and elegantly modest.
The Tandjung Sari did not intend to become the seminal boutique hotel of tropical Asia. It began in 1962 as a place to spend the night for its owner Wija Wawo-Runtu (1926 – 2001) and his English wife Judith when they came to Bali from Jakarta on shopping trips for their antique business. Soon extra bungalows were built to accommodate friends, then friends of friends. It became a hotel almost without anyone noticing it; but within a few years it was internationally renowned among smart people as the place to stay, if you could get in.
What draw people was the Tandjung Sari’s judicious blend of the low key and the luxurious. The architecture was simple, using local materials and Balinese building techniques; yet the location was on prime beachfront with wonderful gardens, the rooms were furnished with Balinese antiques; and the hospitality was warm and sophisticated. Guests had the feeling of experiencing a highly refined version of “the real Bali” with all its sounds and silences, its deep perfumes, its bare-handedness and hilarity, and powerful enchantment at the edge of a spangled sea – while still being able to luxuriate in a good bed or over a gin and tonic.
All this was orchestrated by the very central figure of Wija Wawo-Runtu, a multi – talented man with more than his fair share of beauty and ceaseless, good – natured charm. Rather informally and with much flair, he was a filmmaker, collector and dealer of art and antiques, amateur architect and scholar of Balinese culture. He was a reader, a scotch – drinker, an entrepreneur, and the devoted father of six children – or ten, if one counted, as he did, the four children brought to the marriage by his second wife Tatie, the Javanese beauty he married in 1964 and with whom he transformed the family house on the beach into the legendary Tandjung Sari hotel, to this day still a family – run business.

WOW AMZING !! KUTA BALI
Kuta Bali, Kuta Beach is located on the western side of the island's narrow isthmus and is considered Bali's most famous beach resort destination. Kuta Beach is also minutes away from the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban. The nearby resorts of Tuban, Legian and Seminyak are all within close walking distance. Once a simple, rustic and quiet fishing village, Kuta Beach has witnessed a transformation over the past years due to the rise of various accommodations, dining and shopping options. The rapid growth owes much to visitors, beachcombers and art lovers from nearby Australia. Expatriates also helped pioneer surfing in Kuta, as well. Although a rather frenzied traffic scene has become commonplace here, Kuta Beach continues to attract thousands of visitors every year with its unique charm. During the peak season from July to August and the holiday season for Christmas and New Year, Kuta Beach is regularly fully-booked by travellers looking forward to a pleasant and affordable Bali escape.

Menikmati Keindahan Jambak Sea Turtle Camp

The Bali Kites Festival is a series of kiting events that take place annually between July and August (sometimes through October), notably at the start of the windy season. The kite festivals are one of Bali’s major provincial calendar highlights presenting unique cultural scenes on par with the preceding the Bali Arts Festival. The festival is slated for various dates, with main events customarily taking place along the eastern coast of Padanggalak, just north of Sanur. Main preliminary events are usually held near the end of June and confirmed following favourable weather, therefore planning ahead to witness the event is usually a last-minute deal. Hundreds of competing kite troupes gather from all over the island to pilot their traditional kites, alongside international teams with modern kites in various shapes and sizes.
What started off as a seasonal agrarian festival thanking the heavens for abundant crops and harvests, has become a competitive ground for communal ‘banjar’ youth groups who send their ‘sekaa layangan’ kite teams to participate and win prize money from sponsors. A competition is also usually held for ‘new creation’ kites, which may include detailed three-dimensional figures and unusual designs, from Hindu gods, cars and motorbikes, to mascots and brand sponsors. A gamelan orchestra accompanies each troupe, adding to the joyous spirit of the Bali Kites Festival and the drama of take-off and landing sequences.
The Balinese traditional kites are gigantic and have evolved into increasingly bombastic proportions over the years, measuring up to four metres in width and 10 metres in length. Some other versions, such as the ‘janggan’ type have impressive flowing ribbon tails often reaching 100 metres or more in length. Jointly built at the communal ‘banjar’ village halls all over Bali, skilled youths, supervised by elders, craft bamboo frameworks for weeks up to the major event. Lightweight fabrics are selected according to an agreed-upon colour scheme and some are fitted with intricately carved heads. The final results await transport – usually by truck and requiring special escort along small Balinese roads – towards the Bali Kites Festival flying grounds on Padanggalak Beach.
The ‘bebean’ type is the most common design with a traditional outline of a fish, and is the common ‘giant kite’ of Bali that dominates the skies. The ‘janggan’ somewhat resembles birds with shorter and rounder wings and their long flowing ‘kedeber’ ribbon tails often outshine the kite’s body once airborne. In each competition, the task of assembling and flying the entailing ‘kedeber’ is major challenge for the piloting troupe that normally comprises a dozen or so boys and men. Categories to win include ‘best launch’, ‘best design’ and the ‘longest flight’. Occasionally, the kites descend over nearby rice paddies, and team members must dash through the coast onto the fields to retrieve the hard-earned and painstakingly built kite before it gets soaked.
Don't worry if you missed out on the main opening festival events in July. There are various competitions to witness throughout the second half of the year, which are also highlighted annually as part of the festivity.
