We left Ubud at 2am drove a couple hours then hiked up Mount Batur for sunrise. Mount Batur is an active Volcano with it's last eruption in 2000. Spectacular sunrise and fun had by all. We opted for our guide to take us off the main crater rim to the site of the year 2000 eruption, this was a much quieter route. Pretty exhausted by the time we got back to Ubud.

I woke up at 12 at midnight to quickly pack my bag and meet my friends at the meeting spot at 1am. We left from Canggu to head all the way up to the north of Bali, the ride took around 2 hours.
It was a great climb, relatively easy, and was well worth it to watch the amazing sunrise. I recommend the Mount Batur hike to anyone and any age.
Mt. Batur is one of many active volcano's in Indonesia. You can see where the lava has flown down at the bottom of Mount Batur. There are many local monkeys living on the mountain, they're so much fun to interact with but BE CAREFUL! They'll steal all your food if you have some.

Sunrise Climb Up Mt. Batur // A Must Do In Bali
This is a must read Key Details about hike listed below!!!
Climbing Mt. Batur was so amazing!! We left our villa at 2:00am (soooooo early) got to Mt. Batur at about 3:30am and started the hike. It was crazy, hiking in the pitch dark, with just a guide, a flashlight and your senses heightened. We were lucky to have one of the trail dogs (Rambo) with us. But once you reach the top and see that sun come up over the volcano it is breathtaking and worth the early morning trek up the rocky, semi-trailess Volcano.
Some Key Points to take with you:
Ladies please bring Toilet paper with you. There is one bathroom in the middle of the climb but none at the top. Gotta find a bush.
Bring layers: It was hot hiking up; then it rained and it was cold; but when you reach the top it was extremely cold because you are sweaty, and in our case damp from the rain, it was windy, but there is covered shelter, but it was cold. So then on the way down the sun is up and it is hot again. Its like an oreo cookie of hot and cold. Basically bring layers.
We packed a breakfast of PB&J and apples. They will cook breakfast of a boiled eggs, bread, and bananas, but you expel some calories hiking up and back down so we stuck to the PB&J and apples and we felt great.
They serve Coffee and Tea at the top for I believe 30,000 rupiah so bring some small cash if you want a nice cup of hot goodness and the top to warm you back up.
We also had an amazing guide. He was a young, skinny guy named Katut. The problem is the fourth born of the family is named Katut in the Balinese culture so there could be a lot of them. But if you can find him he was great. Took our pictures, Spoke decent enough English to teach us stuff about the Volcano, but he did so much more. He looked out for our stuff, he provided us a mat to sit on, he was always alert to what we needed. He was awesome. Find Him!!!!
Warning: It is a tough hike up, bring good shoes, and don't expect a leisurely stroll up. It's rocky, not really a path, and is pretty much straight up for 2.5 miles. They provide you with breaks along the way. So you can stop and catch your breath. But again we are in great shape and it was moderately tough.
On the way home there is a great restaurant called Amora it overlooked Mount Batur, and was a phenomenal buffet lunch. We are not really fans of buffets, Anywhere and Ever, but this one was great. It was 75,000 rupiah each for the all you can eat buffett (about $5.50USD) Plus Kim is vegetarian and I am not so there was something for everyone and you cannot beat the view. This is all ok if your not ready for bed like we were.
Also if you have some juice in the tank left, hit up the Hot Springs, it's right next to Mt Batur and is such a cool place to relax after the hike. They have a bar to get a drink if you want, relax your tired muscles in the hot healing springs, and also grab a bite to eat if you want. It's a great spot if you are up for it after the 3:00am start.
We said it in the video but it is a must do. One of the best experiences we have had.
