The great Humpback Whale in Uvita-Bahia Ballena near Osa Peninsula -
The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a Baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12-16 metres (40-50 ft) and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms (79,000 lb). The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with unusually long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. It is an acrobatic animal, often breaching and slapping the water. Males produce a complex whale song, which lasts for 10 to 20 minutes and is repeated for hours at a time. The purpose of the song is not yet clear, although it appears to have a role in mating.
Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales typically migrate up to 25,000 kilometers each year. Humpbacks migrate from the polar waters of South America between July and October and from the cold waters of North America to warmer tropical waters between the months of January and April. The whales come to the warm and quiet waters surrounding the Marino Ballena National Park, Caño Island, and Osa Peninsula area to give birth to their young.

Whale Watching Mom and Baby Humpback Whales CLOSE UP! Drake Bay, Costa Rica
It is always a thrill for us when the Humpbacks come close to our boat on our Divine Dolphin Tours out of Drake Bay , Costa Rica on the Osa Peninsula..
On this day when we first found the whales, several males were chasing the female and her baby and they found protection with our boat. Once things calmed down and all but one male (the winner) remained, they continued to come very close to our boat, giving us a fascinating insight into the tender relationship between the mom and baby both above the water and below.

TicoTimes 360: Whale Watching Tour at Marino Ballena National Park
Humpback whales come to Costa Rica’s southern Pacific to reproduce every year. Whales from the Southern Hemisphere arrive in July and leave in October. The warm water keeps predators at bay and gives whales a safe place to give birth. Calves can measure 6 meters at birth. They then spend up to three months near coastal waters, gaining strength before heading out to sea. Young humpback whales are playful and flip around on the surface while resting on their mothers' heads. Founded in 1989, Marino Ballena National Park was Central America’s first marine park. The park has a large sand and rock formation that’s shaped like a whale’s tail. The park is also home to dolphins, hammerhead sharks, seabirds and iguanas.

Marino Ballena Whale Watching Tour Uvita, Costa Rica - September 10, 2019
It's Whales and Dolphins Festival at Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita, Costa Rica. This is the time of year when humpback whales migrate to the warm subduction zone. We only saw humpback whales jumping high out at a distance, but we saw plenty of humpback mothers and their calf coming up for air and swimming nearby.
The bays at Marino Ballena National Park are the ideal temperature needed for calving and it is safe from killer whales, which prey on the humpback calves. The baby whales are nearly 1 tonne when born and the adult whales can be between 12 and 16 meters long.
Waters of the Marino Ballena National Park are also home to bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins and spinner dolphins; other migratory sea animals can also be seen in this region, such as pilot whales and false killer whales.

Uvita Costa Rica Airbnb | Casa Mia Walkthrough Video | Marino Ballena National Park
The Airbnb we stayed at on the first leg of our trip to Costa Rica last month was absolutely gorgeous in every respect: tropical landscaping, the private backyard with a perfectly sized pool plus a covered BBQ/outdoor kitchen area, two of the three (all air-conditioned) bedrooms each had their own sliding glass doors, which allowed instant access to the amenities in the backyard; super tall ceilings (makes the space feel larger and helps with airflow), and amazingly functional and modern bathrooms (don't you hate slipping in bathtubs?)...But the best part above all? Parque Nacional Marino Ballena is but a few hundred meters away!! This world-class beach with a super distinct Whale Tail is only a five-minute walk to the front door of this jaw-dropping property. Honestly, the toughest decision we had to make was whether we should start our day in the pool, or be some of the first people swimming at the beach...decisions, decisions!!
