Ballestas Islands: Journey to Peru // Day 3
While in Paracas, I had the opportunity to take a boat tour to the Ballestas Islands (affectionately referred to as the Poor Man's Galapagos) and it was incredible! The boat tour stopped at the Paracas Candelabra which is similar to the famous Peru Nazca Lines. After a quick view at the Candelabra, we headed on to Ballestas Islands! You are not able to get off the boat and explore the Ballestas Islands, but our tour guides knew all of the prime viewpoints! We were able to see a colony of sea lions, Humboldt penguins, tons of birds, and beautiful rock formations!
Back on dry land, we headed over to the Paracas National Reserve to get a teaser for the desert experience we will be having in Huacachina!
Come along with me as I continue to explore Peru SOLO!

Ballestas Islands, Peru, 2019
The Ballestas Islands is an important wildlife reserve, with over 160 species of marine birds, including Humboldt penguins, cormorants, boobies and pelicans. There is also animal life, including vast numbers of sea lions. Condors can sometimes be seen flying overhead, especially in February and March, as they feed on the carcasses of dead sea lions. Dolphins and even whales can also be seen at times. The Islands do not actually form part of the Paracas National Reserve, and are protected by separate legislation.
The only way to see the wildlife around the Islas Ballestas is to take a boat trip to the islands. Although visitors are not allowed on to the islands for conservation reasons, views of the wildlife from the boats are excellent. Sea lions frolic in the water around the boats, jumping and playing, and there are fantastic photo opportunities. The islands also have some impressive rock formations, which can be very beautiful with the sea crashing against the rocks. A boat excursion to the islands lasts about two hours.

INCREDIBLE nature moment with Sea Lions | Ballestas Islands, Paracas, Peru
There is so much incredible nature in Peru. Even in the desert... well, close by. Just off the coast of Paracas is the Ballestas Islands, part of the Paracas National Reserve. In this video we arrive to Paracas and take part in a boat trip out the to islands and see penguins and birds before witnessing an incredible nature moment with a sea lion and it's young cub. It was like something straight out of a nature documentary.
We learned about the islands and the wildlife there before heading back to the mainland to see the Paracas National Reserve. The desert meets the ocean in this vast landscape. We saw some stunning viewpoints and unique beaches, enjoyed local seafood and sunsets.
We are so new to vlog travel, having just provided highlights set to music before (see the SE Asia series). SO this adventure is filmed and edited on the road, in hostels, on the ground with THE most slow WIFI. Having to travel and edit is going to be challenging. We would love for you to follow us in the journey and hope the videos provide good information if you are planning to travel to the area or just interested. If it helps just one of you, then thats amazing!

PARACAS PERU | Islas Ballestas & Paracas National Reserve | Paracas Ica | Peru Hop
The next stop on our Peru Hop journey is Paracas Peru, the home of Islas Ballestas and Paracas National Reserve Peru!
After getting a good night's sleep, we wake up, have breakfast, and go on a tour of Islas Ballestas - commonly known here as The Poor Man's Galapagos - a good description. Here, we see hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of sea birds, dozens of sea lions, and some cute Humboldt Penguins. A great couple of hours in an amazing place - and all for just $15 US each!
Next, a free Peru Hop tour of the Paracas National Reserve. It's just outside the town - about 10-15 minutes away - but it's like going to a completely different world. An arid desert touching up against a beautiful ocean. We wish we could have flown a drone over Paracas National Reserve. It was that beautiful!
Special thanks to our friends at Peru Hop. If you want to see the real Peru, we highly suggest you book your journey with this company. Comfortable buses, great guides, worry-free booking and itinerary changes, and never any pressure to book or buy anything you don't want to. We loved our trip with them (and will use them again in Ecuador!)

Ballestas Islands and Huacachina Oasis, Peru
We purchased a 1 Day Tour from Peru Hop! The tour included transportation to Paracas where we boarded a passenger boat and we were taken to Ballestas Islands and later we were taken to the Huacachina Oasis. There we met with a local driver that took us on a wild dune buggy ride and sandboarding. Before leaving Huacachina our driver stopped on top of one of the many sand dunes and we got a chance to watch a spectacular, one of the kind sunset.
