Ballintubber Abbey is an abbey two kilometres northeast of the village of Ballintubber, County Mayo in Ireland that was founded by King Cathal Crobdearg Ua Conchobair in 1216.
King Cathal Crovdearg O’Conor who founded the Ballintubber Abbey was of the royal race of the O'Conners, King of Connacht and notable patrons of the arts. According to the local folklore, Cathal was working in Ballintubber for a man named Sheridan during his time, who - also according to legends - was treating him with great kindness and respect. For that much kindness Cathal received from that man, he wanted to pay him back and thus decided to build a new church instead of repairing the old one - which was the only wish and request that old man asked for later when Cathal visited him after taking his father's place, which is how Ballintubber Abbey came to life.
Among the old stories related to the building of this beautiful abbey, was that it was built in the wrong place when Cathal gave his orders; it was built in Baile tobair Bhrighde, Roscommon instead of Baile tobair Phádraig, Mayo and thus he asked that the right one should be built seven times more significant than the other, which was eventually done.
While it was damaged during penal times - it was still used and was restored in 1966 with more work completed in 1997. It celebrated 800 years in existence in 2016.
The abbey has many attractions and holy stations outside in the grounds of the Abbey.
The abbey marks the beginning of Tochar Phádraig, the ancient pilgrimage route to Croagh Patrick, long defunct but now reopened as a cross-country pilgrimage and tourist trail.
In addition to serving as a Parish church and the Mass that is held there every single day, Ballintubber Abbey also hears the echo of joys of many marriages that are held there as well as some of the other sacraments that are celebrated there every single year. More recently it is famous for who gets married in the abbey - The James Bond star Pierce Brosnan married former TV journalist Keely Shaye Smith at Ballintubber Abbey in County Mayo.
There are a lot of beautiful things and stories about Ballintubber Abbey that made us believe that this is definitely a place tourists should head for when it comes to County Mayo in Ireland and somewhere that even Irish people should know more about. One of these different stories and information facts which we managed to find is the fact that the Mass has been said in the Abbey without a break since the year of its foundation in 1612; for 236 years, the people were attending the Mass in the unroofed Abbey exposed to the cold, the wind, and the rain which proved that the Irish people struggled to keep the faith in spite of dungeons.
The church island, which is known as Oilean na Scríne - Shrine Island lies at the north west of Lough Carra. According to some legends, there are kings buried there - most probably the kings of partree, which is one of the ancient kingdoms of Ireland.
Apart from the history of the place and the weddings that might take place there, it is important to mention that heading there and bringing this video was mostly for bringing people to go and visit this church and enjoy a different kind of tour inside. The tour inside this place includes the ruined Cloister, the pristine interior of the restored Church, the story of the Abbey that refused to die, and the history of the people who were related to the place as a whole. There is a visitors' book which you will receive and you might even assign a tour guide throughout your tour who will help in telling the story in a more detailed manner.
For those who are willing to visit Ballintubber Abbey, the opening hours are from 9 AM to 12 midnight all year long and the guided tours are available from 9:30 AM to 5 PM from Monday to Friday and the weekend goes only by arrangement. The Celtic Furrow opens July and August from 10 AM till 5 PM - the Celtic Furrow is a unique visiting centre that traces back the cultural, historical, and spiritual roots in Ireland over 5,000 years.

Cette abbaye a été fondée au XIIe siècle par Turlough O'Connor, grand roi d'Irlande. Un site monastique avait déjà été érigé au même endroit au VIIe siècle.
Les ruines démontrent encore aujourd'hui toute la magnificence que devait avoir jadis ce site. Des arches finement sculptées sont encore présentes aux quatre coins de la cour intérieure.
L'abbaye de Cong a eu de multiples usages au fil du temps. Elle a déjà servi comme hôpital, comme refuge pour les pauvres et même de cachette pour la famille O'connor.
Un petit sentier part de la cour arrière du monastère et mène aux ruines de la maison de pêche des moines. Il s'agit en fait d'une petite maison en pierre qui a été érigée sur une plate-forme située au-dessus de la rivière.
Une trappe avait été installée au sol afin de permettre aux moines de pêcher leurs poissons et un petit foyer avait même été installé pour leur permettre de se réchauffer en hiver.

Despite being suppressed and damaged during the Protestant Reformation, the roofless abbey continued to be used throughout penal times by Catholics. In 1966, the nave was restored and re-roofed in time for the 750th anniversary of the abbey's foundation and, in 1997, the Chapter House and Dorter area were restored and re-roofed. It is planned to restore the entire east wing before the 800th year celebration in 2016.
The abbey has several modern outdoor attractions, including a very modern abstract Way of the Cross, an underground permanent Crib, and a Rosary Way. There is a small museum. According to the Ballintubber website, Seán na Sagart, the infamous priest-hunter, is buried in the cemetery. A large tree marks the spot.

Moore Hall - famous big house, sadly now abandoned from the Moore Family in Mayo/Ireland. There is an interesting story about this building and the previous owners. The property is regarded as the ancestral home of the Moores of Ireland - the most famous being John Moore the Irish Politician. At the time of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 a force of 1,000 French soldiers under General Humbert landed at Killala. Moore joined the French as did a considerable number of his tenants. After the Battle of Castlebar which took place on 27 August 1798, General Humbert, on 31 August 1798, issued the following decree, which inter alia appointed John Moore as the President of the Government of the Province of Connacht.
Moore Hall, which is also written as MooreHall, is the house and estate of George Henry Moore and his family and it is situated to the south of the village Carnacon in the barony of Carra, County Mayo in a karst limestone landscape. The Moore Hall was built by an aristocratic Irish family, Moores, which were an originally English protestant family.
Moore Hall, which is the ruins of the Moore family's large stately home, lie on Muckloon Hill overlooking Lough Carra. The Moore family was famous and even some of the individuals and characters related to it were considered famous as well and who played major roles and parts in the social, cultural, and political history of Ireland from the end of the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century.
Since we are referring to this place or house as ruins, it is important to mention that the house was burned down in 1923 by anti-Treaty irregular forces during the Irish Civil War since Maurice Moore was viewed as pro-Treaty.
Since the Abbey Ruins and that Hidden Castle, which a lot of people still know nothing about and haven't discovered yet, are situated in county Mayo in Ireland, it is important to shed the light on this place. County Mayo is a county in Ireland; in the west of Ireland, it is part of the province Connacht and is named after the village of Mayo and which is now known as Mayo Abbey.
County Mayo is bounded on the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean; to the south by county Galway, the east by county Roscommon, and the northeast by county Sligo. Ireland is known to be formed of 32 different counties and county Mayo is the third largest and the second largest in Connacht's five counties in both the size as well as the population.
The Abbey Ruins and the Moore Hall are located close to the Ballintubber Abbey which is two kilometers northeast of the village of Ballintubber in county Mayo and which is believed to be the only church found by an Irish king and is still in regular use today. During the long history of this church, it was at some point destroyed to stay without roof but it was still being used until it was restored once again. This abbey has several different attractions, such as the modern abstract way of the cross, the underground permanent crib, and the Rosary way. Inside the place there is also a small museum and it is believed that the infamous priest hunter, Seán na Sagart, is buried in the cemetery, there is also a large tree that marks the place.
In addition to the Ballintubber, the Moore Hall along with the abbey ruins and the hidden castle are also close to Ballinrobe. Ballinrobe is a town in county Mayo that is located on the River Robe that empties into the Lough Mask, two kilometers away. Ballinrobe is not only a town in County Mayo, but it is believed to be the oldest town there. Today, Ballinrobe in county Mayo is an important market town where different renovated historic buildings are found in and around it; there are actually different protected buildings around the city more than any other city in county Mayo (
The final place near the abbey ruins, Moore Hall, county Mayo is Westport, which is a town on the edge of an Atlantic inlet, on Ireland's west coast. In this Georgian town, there are stone bridges that link the tree lined promenade on the banks of the Carrowbeg River, and in it there is also the Rockfleet Castle and Burrishoole Abbey in the northwest and which both have ties to the 16th century pirate queen, Grace O'Malley (
