Ultralight aviation (called microlight aviation in some countries) is the flying of lightweight, 1 or 2 seat fixed-wing aircraft. Some countries differentiate between weight-shift control and conventional 3-axis control aircraft with ailerons, elevator and rudder, calling the former microlight and the latter ultralight.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, mostly stimulated by the hang gliding movement, many people sought affordable powered flight. As a result, many aviation authorities set up definitions of lightweight, slow-flying aeroplanes that could be subject to minimum regulations. The resulting aeroplanes are commonly called ultralight aircraft or microlights, although the weight and speed limits differ from country to country. In Europe the sporting (FAI) definition limits the maximum take-off weight to 450 kg (992 lb) (472.5 kg (1,042 lb) if a ballistic parachute is installed) and a maximum stalling speed of 65 km/h (40 mph). The definition means that the aircraft has a slow landing speed and short landing roll in the event of an engine failure.
In most affluent countries, microlights or ultralight aircraft now account for a significant percentage of the global civilian-owned aircraft. For instance in Canada in October 2010, the ultralight aircraft fleet made up to 19% of the total civilian aircraft registered. In other countries that do not register ultralight aircraft, like the United States, it is unknown what proportion of the total fleet they make up. In countries where there is no specific extra regulation, ultralights are considered regular aircraft and subject to certification requirements for both aircraft and pilot.

The 2013 Mr Price Pro Ballito (mrpricepro.com) is a PRIME rated ASP World Tour event open to the top 90 surfers in the world and six wildcard surfers.
Former event winners Glenn Hall, Tanner and Pat Gudauskas will also feature in the event along with rising stars and ASP World Junior Champion Jack Freestone (Australia), Kolohe Andino (USA).
The top South African contenders include the former champion Jordy Smith, Travis Logie, Beyrick de Vries, Shaun Joubert, Dale Staples and Brandon Jackson.
Eighteen countries are represented at the Mr Price Pro Ballito: Australia, the Basque Country, Brazil, Canary Islands, France, Guadeloupe, Germany, Hawaii, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Reunion, South Africa, Spain, Tahiti and the USA.

Flyers from all around the world have been swarming this week to South Africa for the start today (Saturday) of the Sixth World Microlight Championships.
More than 500 pilots, back-up crews and officials from 30 countries have arrived in Durban for the most important annual gathering of mini-aircraft.
Magnificent men -- and women -- in their flying machines.
It's not a sport for those with a fear of flying -- the aircraft look a little like a throwback to the pioneering creations of the Wright brothers at the dawn of aviation history.
The competition tests the microlight planes and the skills of their pilots to the limit.

And then we have to go and fly first of all a speed leg as fast as we can and then on the remaining fuel we must go as far as we can. There are turn points and we have to take pictures of the turn points to prove that we have been there and then return back here
with two litres of fuel left. And if you don't have to litres left, you get 40 per cent penalty points.

Yes, the country here is very different from Germany. It's much wilder and there are few places to land. We'll see what happens -- I haven't actually flown yet because of engine problems -- but I hope it all goes well.

The Federation Aeronautique Internationale held the previous world championships in Spain, France and Hungary.
This is the first time that such an important aviation event has been hosted by an African country.

This meeting is particularly important because there has never been such an important international competition in this part of the world. And that's why in France we've made a very special effort, in the Federation of Motorised Microlights, to have the maximum number of participants in every category. This presence is very important to us because it's also a mark of solidarity with what's going on in South Africa at the moment.

Organisers expect more than fifteen thousand spectators to attend the ten-day event.
On display will be the skills required for navigation, flight planning, timing, observation, and judicious fuel use.

Friend took me for a spin in a Sling 2 from Virginia airport down to Amanzimtoti and back. We had a 35Kts head wind but upon turning around you will notice the speed increase drastically as we then had a tail wind
