Backpacking in MYANMAR : Balloon over Bagan Temples : Inle Lake : S2 Ep.9
I can't believe this is the last episode in series 2 but it's a big one so you are in for an adventure...

In this episode we take a boat from Mandalay to Bagan. I surprise Tom with a 30th birthday hot air Balloon ride over the temples of old Bagan. I face my fear on a E bike and watch sunset and sunrise from on top of a temple.
Then explore Mount Popa aka the monkey temple then head to Inle lake to see the famous fishermen. Disaster strikes on our overnight bus down to Yangon where we explore the Shwedagon pagoda and we finish our trip with one week in Singapore where we stay at the Marina Bay Sands hotel with the famous infinity pool.

Hot air balloon ride we took just after sunrise in Bagan, Myanmar with the company Balloons Over Bagan.
Myanmar Balloon Festival
The Taunggyi Balloon Festival is an annual event held in the city of Taunggyi, located in Myanmar (Burma). Celebrated at the end of the rainy season, it takes place around the full moon of Tazaungmon, or the eighth month of the Burmese calendar which is usually in November.
The festival draws thousands of spectators with amusement rides and carnival games, but the main highlight is the balloon competition. Teams compete against each other by constructing balloons and launching them. It can take weeks for the teams to construct the elaborate balloons which are judged on various criteria such as creativity and most importantly, a successful launch. The daytime launches start with the smaller designs, usually in the shape of animals. As the day progresses and the sun sets, the larger inflatables impress the crowds with candles dangling from the craft or with fireworks exploding once in mid-air. This event is not without hazards. Some of the balloons crash to the ground, and in 2014, one tragedy killed three spectators.

Taunggyi Balloon Festival - afternoon session
In the afternoons during the Taunggyi Balloon Festival plastic (or nylon?) balloons in animal shapes are launched. While not as spectacular as the evening session it's still impressive. One of the balloons in this video ripped during the launch but still rose high into the air and out of sight.

Every year at the full moon in November there is a large festival in Taunggyi, Shan State, Myanmar. Hot-Air balloons are released in the air during the day and the night. The most beautiful ones get prizes. During the day balloons in animal shape are shown.

Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival - Candle Balloon 10 (Nov 9, 2019)
This was the second candle balloon launched on the night of Saturday (November 9, 2019) at the Tazaungdaing Fire Balloon Festival (တန်ဆောင်တိုင်ပွဲတော်) / Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival held on Awayyar Fire Balloon Field / အဝေရာ မီးပုံးပျံကွင်း. On Saturday, I got plenty of good close up pictures since the crowd on the field was still manageable and there was less rain interruptions (balloons were going up as soon as it got dark) - so maybe close to a dozen balloons went up before I left (before midnight).
One of fireworks balloon already had unusual amounts of smoke coming out before taking off. So I got as far away upwind from it as possible and when it crashed and burned, it must have hit power lines because the electricity went out briefly - for the whole festival...
Later on, one of the candle balloons also had smoke coming out of it and I figured it would not stay up long (the carnival area was downwind...). Luckily it avoided crashing on the ABC Extra Stout booth (or any of the beer / liquor halls, concerts or carnival rides downwind) and landed on the path by the Stout booth...
