Sliema coastal walk
A walk on the shore along the bays and inlets from St. Julian's to Sliema starting at Spinola Bay and ending near Manoel Island bridge. On the way we pass by the Love Monument at Spinola Bay, Balluta Buildings, the Carmelite Church at Balluta Bay and Grand Master De Redin's St. Julian's Tower in Tower Road, Sliema. The tower is now engulfed by modern buildings but is a stark reminder of centuries gone by when, like her sisters up the coast further west, she stood alone, a solitary outpost on an otherwise desolate rocky shore. Striding Marsamxett Harbour, this curved peninsula was of strategic defensive importance and consequently is dotted with military installations from the Knights' and British periods. We also pass by Il-Fortizza (Fort Sliema) and along Ghar id-Dud and Qui-Si-Sana, beneath Fort Cambridge to Fort Tigne, with its circular tower-keep, at Tigne Point. Fort Tigne was the last major fortification built by the Knights of St. John in Malta. It stands at the mouth of Marsamxett Harbour, guarding the entrance along with Fort St. Elmo across the harbour in Valletta. It was completed in 1795, shortly before the islands fell to Napoleon Bonaparte. The rest of this walk from Fort Tigne onwards goes along the Sliema seafront facing Marsamxett Harbour and Valletta.

The rocky shore of Sliema and St Julian’s offers a relaxing spot for sunbathing and enjoying long afternoons in the sun
The coastline from Sliema to St Julian’s is rocky with flat rocks making it a very popular place to swim and sunbathe during the hot summer months.
Since this coastline is very long, you are guaranteed to find a spot which is less busy. With stunning deep blue clear waters, the coast has a few beach clubs or lidos, where sun-beds, water sports and other facilities are available. The most popular beach clubs are the Tigne area, Qui-si-Sana, Ghar id-Dud, Exiles, Surfside and Fond Ghadir – all sought-after places in the afternoons to relax.
A walk to the north by the Sliema front will take you to Balluta Square in St Julian’s. With a vast selection of restaurants and cafeterias, the area is based in the heart of the entertainment centre.
The coast road between Sliema and St Julian’s features a number of hotels, restaurants, shops and cafes. Both locals as well as tourists enjoy walking up and down this long stretch besides the beach. During the winter months, waves smash against the coast, providing a most magnificent spectacle.
