Bally Hooley Nelson, Port Douglas, North Queensland
Built in Leeds as an 0-4-2 Tank loco in 1934, No. 4 ‘Nelson’ spent its working life hauling sugar cane from the fields around Gordonvale to the town's Mulgrave Mill. After withdrawal, the loco was plinthed in the car park outside the mill. However, in 1989, it was heavily modified, being converted to oil fired with the fuel tank housed in a newly acquired tender. The loco was used on the 'Mulgrave Rambler' tourist train that operated over the mill's own lines. Unfortunately, the service only lasted about ten years and Nelson was retired to a shed, out of public view. In 2017 however, Nelson was purchase by the Bally Hooley Railway in Port Douglas. The loco was returned to its original coal burning form, the fuel tank having several holes drilled through it to provide additional water capacity in the tender! Nelson can now regularly be seen at work on Bally Hooley's Sunday's only steam service, plying its trade on the last 4km of the old Mossman Mill to Port Douglas Sugar Wharf line. Special thanks must go to the excellent staff at the Bally Hooley Railway for their assistance and enthusiasm in the making of this film, even extending to a lesson about how to cook the perfect garlic bread using a conveniently available steam locomotive!

Bally Hooley Steam Train Port Douglas 1993
In the early 1990s, Mossman Mill ran the rides from the Mill. This day, the morning run went to Port Douglas, the afternoon run went north. It was fun to be running amongst the cane trains. Also there is video of the steam engine powering the mill - still in use at the mill in 2016

QT Resort

Bally Hooley Steam Railway
The Bally Hooley Steam Railway is located at Port Douglas, 67km north of Cairns, in far north Queensland, Australia. The line runs about 4km along the former route of the Douglas Shire Tramway, built in 1896 to link the sugar mill town of Mossman to the port facilities at Port Douglas. The Bally Hooley Railway's 2 steam locomotives both operated on Mossman Mill's extensive cane railway system before being displaced by diesels.
The locomotive running on the day of my visit in September 2010 was Bundy, an 0-6-2T built in 1952 by Bundaburg Foundry

2013-04-28 Balla Hooly Steam Railway Port Douglas Australien
On our Australien-Trip we came to Port Douglas, near Cairns, to go to the Great Barrier Riff by ship. On sundays only the Bally Hooley Steam Railway ride two trips a day. One ride takes nearly 50 min. The cost for one round trip is AUD 10.00. The lokomotive Speedy is very slow. In the depot we see a second steam locomotive. Another steam locomotive „Faugh-a-Ballagh we found in the town as a monument. A further renovation ist planned. I think, the sugar train is a toy train for families. But the steam locomotives are from 1952 and 1958.
