Ballybeg Priory
A few miles south of Buttevant, Ballybeg Priory is visible from the main Cork/Limerick road. Although it is a ruin, some parts remain almost completely intact, and it's very easy to picture how this large campus must have looked when it bustled with life back in the 13th century.
Ballybeg Priory
In this, the 34th. episode from my series Stories from the River of Time we visit the beautiful and historic Ballybeg Priory at Buttevant in north County Cork.
The priory, dedicated to St. Thomas, was founded in 1229 by Philip de Barry for the Canons Regular of St. Augustine - priests who lived according to a monastic rule.
The priory buildings were laid - out in the 13th century around a central cloistered courtyard.

Dromaneen Castle
Dromaneen Castle is more a mansion than an actual castle. It belonged to the O'Callaghan clan. They also owned Dromore and Clonmeen castles. The ruin is in a reasonable condition. Nestled on the banks of the Blackwater, it must have been an idyllic spot in its prime. The castle was renovated in 1909, by John O'Brien, and was lived in until, 1940 when it burned down.
