Ballycarbery Castle, Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Munster, Ireland, Europe
Ballycarbery Castle is a castle 3 kilometres (2 mi) from Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Ireland . The castle is high on a grass hill facing the sea and is a short distance from Cahergall Fort and Leacanabuile Fort. There was some kind of residence situated on the site of the castle as early as 1398 however the present ruins were constructed in the 16th century. It was noted as a McCarthy Mor castle by some sources at that time but whether it was occupied by the McCarthy Mors or their wardens the O'Connells is unknown. The castle was passed onto Sir Valentine Browne following the death of its owner Donal McCarthy More. In 1652 it was attacked by cannon fire from Parliament forces during the War of the Three Kingdoms. In the 18th century a house was built on the site using the barn wall and it was inhabited by the Lauder family. This house was demolished in the early 20th century. The castle was surrounded by a high wall with less than half still remaining. There are arrow slits dotted along the bottom of the remaining wall. A staircase remains inside one part of the wall, but is not easily accessible. The ground floor of the castle was made up of several chambers but only one chamber is still roofed and walled. It is a large chamber with a quite high roof and in one corner a staircase leading upstairs. There are two different staircases leading to the first floor and there is also a path up the back of the castle since the whole back wall is missing. One of the staircases is up on a height inside the ground floor chamber and is in very good condition. The other is entered from outside the chamber and is slightly damaged. The first floor is covered in grass and has some windows and a few small rooms but is mostly in the open. The first floor is the highest accessible part of the castle as the steps to the second floor must have been attached to the now missing back wall.

Ballycarbery Castle was said to have been built in the 15th century by Carbery O’Shea. It was built on a slight eminence on the tidal estuary of the river Ferta, just east of Valentia Harbour and near Cahersiveen.
Originally, the main castle was very sizable and consisted of a main hall house and projecting tower. The walls were over 9 ft thick. There is an interesting history of how the Ballycarbery Castle came to belong to the McCarthy family. McCarthy Mór brought the O’Shea’s to task and installed a family of the Clan O’Connell under Morgan Dubh as constables. These O’Connells were the ancestors of Daniel O’Connell.
There is a legend that indicates how independent these constables could be. When McCarthy Mór sent a cradle to the O’Connells indicating they were to take in a fostering child, the O’Connells returned the messenger’s head in the cradle; indicating their answer. McCarthy Mór was so incensed at this action, he arrived with a large army, took the castle and hanged Morgan Dubh from the highest window. It is reputed that on a certain night of the year, Morgan’s screams can be heard echoing around the castle walls.
In 1652, it was attacked by cannon-fire from English forces during the Cromwellian invasion.

Ballycarbery Castle, Ring of Kerry, Co. Kerry, Ireland
I visited Ballycarbery Castle on September 13, 2013.
Ballycarbery Castle overlooks the sea near the mouth of the Valencia River about 3km from Caherciveen in County Kerry.
The castle is in ruins, and the whole back wall has fallen down. The castle was surrounded by a defensive wall, but more than half of it has gone. You can still see the arrow slits along the remaining parts of the wall. A staircase can be seen inside one part of the wall. The ground floor of the castle had several rooms, of which only one has roof and walls intact. There are two staircases up to the first floor, one of which is still in good condition. The second floor is not accessible, as the stairs were probably against the back wall which has gone.
The present Ballycarbery Castle was built in the 16th century, although there had been an earlier building on the site since the 14th century. It was a seat of the MacCarthy Mores, but may have been occupied by their wardens the O'Connells. During the 1590, it was granted to Sir Valentine Browne in the 1590s after the death of Daniel McCarthy, but was taken back by the Macarthys during the wars between the Royalist and Confederate forces in the 1640s. Oliver Cromwell's troops severely damaged the castle in 1652 when it was attacked with cannons.
